Lorentzweiler suits a morning on foot or by bike out of the capital. I'd head straight to Blaschette for the Neolithic house and stone circle, then on to Fautelfiels for the rock chapel and the view over the valley.

04 My tip
A cave found in 2018
The Gourmangslee, a natural cave in the commune, wasn't discovered until 2018, according to the Guttland regional tourist office.
Luxembourg’s national anthem opens with a line about the Alzette winding through the meadows, and the Guttland regional tourist office allows itself a question. Could the Lorentzweiler valley have been the inspiration for it? It doesn’t say yes, and neither will I. What is true is that this commune, the first in the valley as you leave the capital, holds more than its commuter-belt look suggests.
From the Neolithic to a cave found in 2018
Near Blaschette there’s a carefully reconstructed Neolithic dwelling, with its house, garden and a circle of standing stones, which the regional office says conjures up very distant times. Near Helmdange, the Fautelfiels site offers a sweeping view of the valley and a picturesque chapel set entirely into the rock. And the Gourmangslee, a natural cave, was only discovered in 2018.
The Fautelfiels chapel, on the street of the same name in Helmdange, is the one stop I wouldn’t skip. visitluxembourg explains that it sits in a natural cave in the Luxembourg sandstone and that secret masses were held there during the French Revolution. It was restored in 2013, when a Luxembourgish artist painted a triptych for it showing three biblical scenes.
The Op Kuelent trail is devoted to the nature and history of the Kuelebierg, the coal hill, with panels giving your position, altitude and distance from the start. In the village itself, a sculpture trail gathers works by various artists in a green setting.
Valley and forest
The main way to explore the commune is a part-drive, part-walk circuit of about ten kilometres. On one side is the Alzette valley, with a cycle path following the railway from the capital to Ettelbruck; on the other, the Gréngewald, the great forest the regional office calls legendary. The commune itself owns 315.10 hectares of woodland. The same Grünewald is shared with Steinsel, whose part of the forest has a heritage trail with fairy-tale names.
Here’s a titbit for British readers. According to the Grand Ducal Court, today’s Grand Duke Guillaume went to primary school in Lorentzweiler and later went to Sandhurst for his military training, in 2001 and 2002, so there’s a small British connection here. There’s more on him under Grand Duke of Luxembourg.

How I’d spend a morning here
It works well as a half day by train or bike from the capital. I’d start at the Neolithic house, move on to Fautelfiels and come back along the valley. If you’ve time, Lintgen and Mersch are a few stops further north, and together they make a full Alzette valley day.
Do set your expectations, though. The regional office publishes no opening times or prices for the Neolithic house or the Fautelfiels chapel, so I’d treat them as outdoor stops rather than guided visits. There are no museums or big monuments here either. What Lorentzweiler offers is valley scenery, dense forest and a couple of spots with very old history twenty minutes from the capital, and for a quiet morning that’s enough for me.
Getting there
Lorentzweiler station is on Route de Luxembourg, on the line north from the capital, and second-class travel is free. With the valley cycle path, it’s also an easy ride out of the city on two wheels.

Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
