Insenborn, the beach village of the Upper Sûre

Insenborn is a village in the Esch-sur-Sûre commune on the shore of the Upper Sûre lake. Around it lie three of the lake's six monitored bathing areas, the village beach, Fuussefeld and Burfelt, plus the solar boat jetty, the Burfelt nature centre and the Belvédère viewpoint, 70 metres above the water.

  • Insenborn is the Upper Sûre lake's beach village, in the Esch-sur-Sûre commune.
  • Three monitored bathing areas and the Frounbierg lawn are nearby.
  • Swimming is allowed from 1 May to 30 September, 7:00 to 23:00.
  • The Belvédère Burfelt stands 70 metres above the water.

If you're heading to the lake with children on a July Saturday, I'd leave the car at the free Am Kéilert car park and walk down or take the Plage-Bus. Burfelt, twenty minutes on foot from the car, is the most out-of-the-way beach.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 My tip

Park for free at Am Kéilert

The Am Kéilert car park is free, sits by the bus stop and is 500 metres from the village beach. The An der Baech, Frounbierg and Fuussefeld car parks charge.

    The Belvédère Burfelt

  3. 03 My tip

No dogs, and no DIY barbecues

Dogs are banned on the Burfelt, Fuussefeld and Frounbierg lawns. Grilling is limited to the permanent barbecues at Fuussefeld, and in 2026 the commune banned all fires because of the drought.

Insenborn is the closest thing landlocked Luxembourg has to a seaside village. Here the lakeside lawns stand in for sand. The village itself is small, part of the Esch-sur-Sûre commune, and what makes it special is that half the monitored bathing areas on the Upper Sûre lake are right around it.

Four lawns to swim from

The village beach, which the commune calls plage 1, has car parks nearby and the solar boat jetty at its left-hand end. Fuussefeld is on the way down from the village, with a paid car park alongside and permanent barbecues. Burfelt is the most remote, about twenty minutes’ walk from its free car park. All three are official monitoring points, and all three scored top marks in 2025. Visit Éislek also lists the Frounbierg lawn, with paid parking and the Bonnal bus stop.

Bathing runs from May to September, both months included, and the lawns can only be used between 7:00 and 23:00. Since the season closed on 30 September 2026, there’s no swimming until 1 May 2027, and in August 2026 the commune was already warning of a cyanobacteria risk, which is exactly what you should check on the official website before getting in. Don’t expect lifeguards, either; the water authority says safety supervision isn’t its job.

Burfelt, forest and viewpoint

The Burfelt is a lakeside forest with a nature centre. A 2.5 km walk with information panels leads to it, and visitluxembourg calls it an idyllic place to swim in summer. Close by stands the Belvédère Burfelt panoramic platform, built in 2016, a timber structure with a glass railing 70 metres above the lake so that even small children can see over. You can’t drive there; you park about ten minutes away. The Éislek Pad Insenborn and the western section of the Circuit du Lac both pass by.

Rules that are taken seriously

What strikes me is how seriously the lake is protected, and it makes sense, since about 70% of the country drinks from it. Dogs are banned on the Burfelt, Fuussefeld and Frounbierg lawns. Grilling is limited to the permanent barbecues at Fuussefeld, and in 2026 a commune regulation of 17 July banned all fires because of the drought. Music is headphones only. And wild camping isn’t allowed.

Getting there without the hassle

My advice is not to fight for a space by the water. The Am Kéilert car park is free, next to the bus stop and 500 metres from the village beach. On Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays in season buses 155 and 157 run, and when the weather’s fine a Plage-Bus ferries people from the car parks to the lawns.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Esch-sur-Sûre before prices climb.

Beyond the water

In the village, St Roch’s church is neo-Gothic, built in 1861 to plans by the architect Biver. And very close by is Lultzhausen, with the water sports centre and the youth hostel. To compare with other shores around the country, my ranking of swimming lakes in Luxembourg lines them up.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Esch-sur-Sûre and choose by the reviews.

A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.

So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Luxembourg on Omio and pick the one that suits you.
