The Dënzelt, the old Gothic courthouse on Echternach's market square, with arcades, statues and turrets

Echternach had 6 hotel establishments and 3 campsites in 2025, according to STATEC, two hotels fewer than in 2024. It's Luxembourg's oldest town, built around the abbey Willibrord founded in 698, and the start of Route 1 of the Mullerthal Trail. For two or three days' walking among sandstone rocks, there's no better base with shops, restaurants and a lake.

  • Echternach had 6 hotels and 3 campsites in 2025, according to STATEC.
  • It's the country's oldest town and the start of Route 1 of the Mullerthal Trail.
  • There's no railway; buses run there free within Luxembourg.
  • Around Whit Tuesday, with the dancing procession, book months ahead.

If you're coming to walk, I'd give Echternach two nights. The first evening for the abbey and the market square, a full day on Route 2 to Berdorf via the Wolfsschlucht, and an unhurried return by the lake. One night is too short for what's around it.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    The market square at dusk

Around the Dënzelt, the old Gothic courthouse, historic buildings and fragments of the medieval wall make up the centre. When the groups have gone, that's the time to wander.

  2. 02 My tip

    Start walking from the door

Route 1 of the Mullerthal Trail, 36.7 km, begins at the basilica, and Route 2, 39.7 km, also leaves Echternach towards Berdorf. Staying here means starting each stage without a car.

  3. 03 Worth the splurge

Book months ahead for the procession

The dancing procession, on UNESCO's intangible heritage list since 2010, takes place every year on Whit Tuesday and draws some 10,000 pilgrims and spectators. With six hotels, rooms go fast.

What I would book

Echternach is the gateway to the Mullerthal, the sandstone region Luxembourgers call Little Switzerland. It sits on the Sûre, right on the German border, and it’s the oldest town in the country. It has 6,031 residents, a seventh-century abbey, a picture-book market square and, above all, the start of the two most popular routes of the Mullerthal Trail. If you’re staying in this corner of Luxembourg, it’s my first choice.

What the numbers say

STATEC counted six hotel establishments in Echternach in 2025, two fewer than in 2024, plus three campsites. That’s the most hotels of any commune in the canton, followed by Berdorf with five. Across the canton of Echternach there were 16 hotels and 12 campsites.

Another figure helps explain the picture. In the Mullerthal region, hotels recorded around 59,500 guest nights in 2025, against more than 750,000 across all types of accommodation. Campsites take the lion’s share. With a tent or a motorhome, you’ll find far more choice than those six hotels suggest.

Why Echternach rather than a village

Because it gives you the best of both. On one hand, it’s a proper town with restaurants, shops and a historic centre to stroll at the end of the day. On the other, the rocks start at the edge of town. Route 1 of the Mullerthal Trail, 36.7 km towards Rosport, Moersdorf and Herborn, begins at the basilica. Route 2, 39.7 km, also starts in town and heads for Berdorf and Müllerthal by way of the Wolfsschlucht, a gorge 40 metres deep.

That means walking out of your hotel door, with no car and no bus. For me, that’s the big advantage over sleeping in the capital and coming up for the day. Only Route 3, 37.7 km from Müllerthal through Blumenthal, Larochette and Beaufort, starts elsewhere, and for that one Berdorf or Beaufort make more sense as a base.

What you’ll see without leaving town

The town took shape around an abbey that Willibrord established in 698. At its heart are the former Benedictine abbey and St Willibrord’s Basilica, which holds the saint’s tomb, and the abbey museum, in the cellars of the abbot’s palace, opens 10am to noon and 2pm to 5pm for €3. Around the market square, the Dënzelt and remains of the medieval wall make the scene that turns up in every photo.

On the edge of town lies Echternach lake, 30 hectares surrounded by 375 of woodland, with free bathing at Adventure Island from 7am to 10pm between 1 May and 30 September. Beside it stands the Roman villa, which visitluxembourg ranks among the major Roman remains north of the Alps.

Eden au Lac, the hotel behind the searches

Plenty of people type «Eden au Lac Echternach» expecting the lake, but it’s a hotel. It stands at 1 Nonnesees, on a wooded Mullerthal hillside looking across to the old town, and its visitluxembourg listing calls it a family-run, independent hotel founded in 1982. The wellness area is a big one, with indoor and outdoor pools, a gym, several saunas, a hammam and a jacuzzi, plus a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner and meeting rooms.

One thing to check before booking. For 2026 the listing gives its opening season as 1 June to 14 November, so don’t count on it in spring. I’d pick it for a pool and some quiet after a day on the Trail; if you’d rather stroll to dinner on the market square, I’d stay in the centre.

One night or two?

The average hotel stay in the Mullerthal was 1.79 nights in 2025, according to STATEC, the shortest in the country along with the Ardennes. Nearly everyone stays one night and moves on. I think that’s a mistake, because a single Trail stage takes a whole day and the town deserves its own evening. Two nights let you walk Route 2 at your own pace and still have a morning for the basilica and the market square. The full story of the town is in Echternach.

Book early for Whit Tuesday

Echternach is known internationally for its dancing procession, added by UNESCO to its intangible heritage list in 2010. It’s held each year on Whit Tuesday. The government’s portal puts the dancers at about 8,000 and the crowd of pilgrims and onlookers at around ten thousand.

With six hotels in town, that week is the hardest of the year to find a bed. If you want to see it, I’d book as soon as you know when Whitsun falls and look at Berdorf or the local campsites too. It’s all in the Echternach dancing procession.

So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Echternach on GetYourGuide.

Getting there

Echternach has no railway station; it’s not on CFL’s list. You arrive by bus or by car, and the bus is free within the country. Specific routes and times are published on mobiliteit.lu, which is where I’d check them on the day.

If you’d rather sleep right among the rocks and don’t mind giving up the town, compare Mullerthal hotels in Berdorf, Beaufort and Larochette.

If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.

Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
