Where to stay in San Marino, and when Rimini is the smarter base

San Marino can be seen in a day, which is exactly why hardly anyone sleeps there. In 2025, 2,110,236 visitors entered the country and there were just 123,087 arrivals at hotels and other accommodation. To me that gap is the best reason to stay, because the town you find at nine in the evening is not the one the day-trippers see at four.

Is it worth staying overnight in San Marino?

If San Marino is the reason for the trip, yes. The Città, the UNESCO-listed old town, fills up mid-morning with coaches and empties as the afternoon fades. Sleep inside the walls and you get Piazza della Libertà, the ramparts and the path between the towers with very few people around, in the best light of the day.

There’s a practical reason as well. On the autumn 2026 timetable the last bus back to Rimini leaves at 19:00. If you want dinner on the mountain without watching the clock, or to catch sunset from the viewpoints of San Marino, you need a bed up there. The official average stay in 2025 was 1.74 nights, which matches what I’d do, one or two nights and move on.

The three areas, and the one I’d choose

First, the Città itself. It’s the priciest and the most atmospheric, with hotels in historic buildings and everything on foot. Two drawbacks, the hills and the fact that the old town is a restricted traffic zone. Hotels arrange a temporary permit to unload at the door, and it’s worth confirming when you book.

Second, the lower castelli. Borgo Maggiore is linked to the Città by the cable car, which runs every quarter of an hour, and it’s the option I like best if you’re driving. Serravalle and Domagnano sit nearer the Rimini road and the outlet and tend to be cheaper, but from there you rely on the car or the bus to get up the hill.

Third, don’t sleep in San Marino at all. Rimini has more than 1,000 hotels, 15 km of beach, a railway station and an airport, and it’s 55 minutes away on the Bonelli shuttle for €7 each way. Named hotels, and why only these

I couldn’t find an official accommodation directory I was able to consult, so in this guide I only name hotels whose own websites I’ve read. It isn’t a ranking or a complete list. It’s what I can tell you with the facts in front of me.

Inside the walls, the four-star options are the Grand Hotel San Marino on Viale Onofri, looking out over the Montefeltro valley; Hotel Titano, in a 19th-century building on Contrada del Collegio; and Hotel Cesare, a small place with 18 rooms on Salita alla Rocca and a partner car park 20 metres away. The first two belong to the same group, which claims to have been welcoming guests in San Marino since 1894. Why the scale stops there is in why San Marino has no five-star hotels.

At three stars, Hotel Rosa has the location I’d want for the towers, right by the First Tower, and it gives guests a free garage, which is rare inside the walls. Hotel Joli, three stars superior, has private parking and its own osteria.

Outside the Città, Hotel Crocenzi is in Borgo Maggiore, a kilometre from the cable car, with terraces looking towards the sea. Hotel Il Monte in Serravalle is open all year with free parking and wifi. None of them publishes fixed prices online, so the only honest way to compare is with real dates in a search. Nor do Hotel San Marino iDesign, a four-star with free parking a kilometre from the centre, or Hotel La Rocca, a family place on the climb to the Guaita.

Cars, luggage and parking

If you arrive by car, the hotel rate is where you save most. Participating hotels give guests parking at €6 a night in the Città’s public car parks and at P11 in Borgo Maggiore, registered with your number plate at reception, valid until 23:59 on the day you leave. What I wouldn’t do is book in the Città without asking how you reach the door. With the ZTL, a big suitcase and the gradient, a hotel with an unloading permit and one without feel very different by the time you check in. If you travel by motorhome or with a tent, the alternative is camping in San Marino, at Cailungo, open all year.

What the booking page won’t tell you

Two things. San Marino charges an accommodation tax, which the government itself mentions in its 2027 Economic Programme, but I couldn’t find the rate published, so ask before paying. The same document admits the hotel sector needs a broad overhaul, which makes me read recent photos and reviews more carefully here than elsewhere.

The other is your phone. San Marino isn’t covered by EU roaming rules, and UK networks set their own charges for it, so checking in online on mobile data can cost you depending on your plan.
