Luxembourg events, the year's calendar month by month
Luxembourg has a busy festival calendar. The big dates already published are the Nuit des Musées (10 Oct 2026), Winterlights (20 Nov 2026 to 3 Jan 2027), Éimaischen (29 Mar 2027), the Octave (17 Apr to 2 May 2027), National Day (22 and 23 Jun 2027) and the Schueberfouer (20 Aug to 8 Sep 2027). Carnival, Buergbrennen and Echternach's procession follow moveable rules.

Published dates run from the Nuit des Musées (10 Oct 2026) to the Schueberfouer (20 Aug to 8 Sep 2027).
Winterlights fills Luxembourg City with Christmas markets from 20 Nov 2026 to 3 Jan 2027.
National Day is really about the eve, 22 June.
Carnival, Buergbrennen and the Echternach procession follow moveable rules.
If I were timing a trip around one event, it would be National Day eve or late August for the Schueberfouer. Those are the two dates when you see the whole country out on the streets, and both fall in the good-weather months. For a winter break, Winterlights; for something you won't see anywhere else, Echternach's dancing procession.

What I would keep in mind
01 Most beautiful
The eve of 23 June
Changing of the guard, a torchlight procession and fireworks off the Adolphe Bridge. It's the biggest street party in the country, and in 2027 it falls on Tuesday 22 June.
Most of these events are outdoors with no ticket, and public transport is free nationwide, so getting from a Christmas market to a wine festival costs you nothing.
Carnival, Buergbrennen, Echternach's procession and most wine festivals follow a rule rather than a fixed date. Until the organiser publishes the day, I wouldn't book flights.
My score out of 10, based on what each offers a visitor, how unusual it is and how easily it fits into a short break. It's my opinion, not an official ranking.
The whole city out on the streets, torches, fireworks over the Pétrusse and free concerts until late. In June and with fair weather, it's the night of the year.
The country's great pilgrimage since 1666, with the Mäertchen fair on Place Guillaume II. Best if you're drawn to religious or traditional events.
7.2 out of 10
For a small country, Luxembourg packs a lot into its calendar, and plenty of its festivals go back centuries. Below is the full year from October 2026 to September 2027, with the dates already published and, where they aren’t, the rule each festival follows. I’ll also tell you which ones I think are worth planning a trip around, and which I’d only catch if I happened to be in the country anyway.
Autumn, museums after dark, nuts and new wine
The season starts strongly. On Saturday 10 October 2026 the capital’s museums stay open from 17:00 to 01:00 for the Nuit des Musées, with music, dance and live acts. The next day, the second Sunday of October as every year, Vianden holds its Veiner Nëssmoort, a nut market that Visit Luxembourg says draws up to 20,000 people. The town centre is shut to traffic from 10:00 to 19:00, a free shuttle runs from the park-and-ride, and it’s the day to try Nëssdrëpp, a spirit made from green walnuts. On Sunday 18, Schengen closes the harvest with the Hunnefeier, the last date in the round of Luxembourg wine festivals.
In November the capital holds its City Party on Saturday the 14th, and from the 27th to the 29th the Fête des Vins et Crémants brings the Moselle’s producers to town. Two smaller dates on the official listings are Strassen’s old-fashioned fair on Sunday 8 November and open day at the distillery museum in Kehlen on Sunday 15.
Winter, lights, masks and bonfires
On 20 November Winterlights begins, with markets on Place d’Armes, Place de la Constitution, Place de Paris and Place Guillaume II until 3 January. Wiltz has a St Nicholas market on Sunday 29 November, a week ahead of 6 December and Kleeschen, Luxembourg’s St Nicholas, and Mondorf-les-Bains opens on three weekends. Every market is covered in Luxembourg Christmas markets.
After New Year, 2 February brings Liichtmëssdag in Luxembourg, when children roam the streets with home-made lanterns, and carnival season begins. The Diekirch Cavalcade, one of the biggest in the country with around 20,000 people, sets off on Sunday 7 February 2027 at 14:00, and Schifflange has its own on the 14th. On the first Sunday after Carnival the Buergbrennen bonfires are lit, and on Ash Wednesday Remich burns its straw figure on the bridge over the Moselle.
The fourth Sunday of Lent is Bretzelsonndeg in Luxembourg, Pretzel Sunday, when a sweet pretzel goes to the one you love. On Easter Monday, 29 March in 2027, the old town fills with pottery for Éimaischen, and from 17 April to 2 May the cathedral welcomes the pilgrims of the Octave, with the Mäertchen fair on Place Guillaume II. The ING Night Marathon, the Luxembourg Marathon, is on Saturday 8 May 2027, and on Whit Tuesday Echternach holds its dancing procession, on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list since 2010.
What’s on in Luxembourg in summer?
From 11 to 21 June 2027, the Fête de la Musique, its free concerts spread right across the country. On the 22nd, the eve of Luxembourg National Day and the biggest night of the year, then on the 23rd the parade and the Te Deum. In July, Diekirch holds its five-day Al Dikkrich from the second Friday of the month, Esch-sur-Alzette hosts the Pride parade it has staged every July since 2015, and Ehnen has its wine festival on the third weekend. The capital lays on open-air music in its Summer in the City season, including the Blues’n Jazz Rallye through the Grund, Clausen and Pfaffenthal, and Wiltz Castle keeps up the theatre and music festival it has run since 1953.
Summer closes with the Schueberfouer, which takes over the Glacis between Friday 20 August and Wednesday 8 September in 2027. September also brings the Grevenmacher wine festival on the second weekend and Wormeldange’s Riesling Open on the third, and mid-month the country hosts the Tour de Luxembourg, its big pro cycling race, which in 2026 ran from 16 to 20 September.
Several important events had no 2027 date published at the end of September 2026. The Echternach procession, the carnival parades other than Diekirch and Schifflange, the Buergbrennen, the Diekirch International March, the Tour de Luxembourg and the medieval festival at Vianden Castle, which runs over two weekends. My advice is not to book flights for any of them until the organiser confirms. For the rest of the year month by month, start with Luxembourg in October.
Listings from Visit Luxembourg, the Luxembourg City Tourist Office, the Ville de Luxembourg and organisers, checked on 29 and 30 September 2026. Moveable dates are given as each source states them, not converted into days.

True or false?
0/3Pick before you peek.
The Schueberfouer began life as a market in the 14th century.
See the answer
True. John the Blind founded it in 1340 as an eight-day market for St Bartholomew's Day. The first rides arrived in 1849.
Echternach's dancing procession falls on the same calendar date every year.
See the answer
False. It's held on Whit Tuesday, so the date moves each year with Easter.
Luxembourg is the only country with Europe Day as a public holiday.
See the answer
True. 9 May has been a public holiday since 2019, and the government portal says no other country has done the same.
The big ones are Winterlights at Christmas, carnival and Buergbrennen in February, Éimaischen on Easter Monday, the Octave between April and May, Echternach's dancing procession, National Day on 23 June, the Moselle wine festivals and the Schueberfouer funfair at the end of August.
What is the biggest festival in Luxembourg?
National Day on 23 June, and above all its eve, which the Ville de Luxembourg describes as the country's biggest popular festival. For size and length, the Schueberfouer is the largest annual funfair in Luxembourg and the Greater Region.
Are there any events in Luxembourg in October 2026?
Yes. The Nuit des Musées on Saturday 10 October, with the capital's museums open from 17:00 to 01:00; Vianden's nut market on Sunday 11; and Schengen's Hunnefeier, the end-of-harvest festival, on Sunday 18.
When is the Luxembourg Christmas market?
Winterlights runs from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with four markets in Luxembourg City on Place d'Armes, Place de la Constitution, Place de Paris and Place Guillaume II.
Which Luxembourg event is best for a weekend from the UK?
For me, National Day eve in June or a Winterlights weekend in December. Both are in the capital, easy to reach by air to Findel or by train via Brussels or Paris, and walkable once you're there. Luxembourg is in Schengen, so allow for the EES check on arrival.
Are Luxembourg's bank holidays the same as ours?
No. There are 11, including Easter Monday, 1 May, Europe Day on 9 May, Ascension, Whit Monday, National Day on 23 June and Assumption on 15 August. Good Friday isn't one, except for the banks.
