Ranking of the country's museums

Museums in Luxembourg, which to see and when they're free

Luxembourg has more than 60 museums, seven of them within a mile of each other in the capital. My favourites are MNHA (€7), the Dräi Eechelen Museum (€7) and The Family of Man in Clervaux (€6). Nearly all have a free evening each week and free entry for young people; most close on Mondays.

With a single museum evening in the capital, I'd pick MNHA on a Thursday from 17:30, when it's free. Beyond the capital, The Family of Man in Clervaux is the one I wouldn't miss, and it's on UNESCO's Memory of the World register.

My ranking, scored

The museums in Luxembourg I'd visit

My own scores out of 10. They weigh what a museum tells you about the country that you couldn't see elsewhere, the building, and value for time and money; prices and hours are those published as of September 2026.

  1. National Museum of History and Art (MNHA)

The country's archaeology in galleries cut into the rock beneath the Marché-aux-Poissons, plus coins and decorative arts. The best overview; free on Thursdays from 17:30 to 20:00.

    9.0 out of 10

  2. Dräi Eechelen Museum

For its size, Luxembourg has an awful lot of museums. The government’s official portal counts more than 60, and seven of the capital’s make up the Museumsmile, an arc of less than a mile from the old town to Kirchberg. On a short trip, the problem isn’t finding museums, it’s choosing, and fitting each one into a day when it’s open and, ideally, an hour when it’s free.

My ranking, and why in this order

I put at the top whatever explains the country and can’t be seen anywhere else. The National Museum of History and Art comes first because it sums up Luxembourg from prehistory to the 20th century, with the archaeology in galleries hewn out of rock beneath the Marché-aux-Poissons. Next is the Dräi Eechelen Museum, telling the fortress’s story from inside one of its forts and turns a walk along the ramparts into something you understand.

Outside the capital, my clear favourite is The Family of Man in Clervaux. The 503 images chosen by Edward Steichen, the work of 273 photographers in 68 countries, has been installed in Clervaux Castle since 1994, and UNESCO added it to the Memory of the World register in 2003. It costs €6, with hours of 12:00-18:00 from Wednesday to Sunday until 1 January 2027.

After those come Mudam, as much for Pei’s building as for what hangs in it, and the Lëtzebuerg City Museum, the best introduction to the city. The National Museum of Military History in Diekirch, with its Battle of the Bulge dioramas, and the Rumelange mining museum, with its train into the gallery, are the two I’d do outside the capital after Clervaux. Out west at Haut-Martelange, the slate museum takes you 42 metres down a mine.

When you don’t pay

This is the trick that saves the most money. Almost every museum has one free evening a week, and they’re spread out as if someone had planned it. Tuesday from 17:30, the Natur Musée. Wednesday brings the Kirchberg neighbours, Dräi Eechelen free from 17:30 to 20:00 and Mudam from 18:00 to 21:00, right next to each other. Thursday it’s the turn of the MNHA (17:30-20:00) and the City Museum (18:00-20:00). Friday, Villa Vauban from 18:00 to 21:00. And Casino Luxembourg never charges at all.

By age it’s even more generous. The national museums are free up to 26, and the city museums, Mudam and the Natur Musée up to 21, as does the Tudor Museum in Rosport. Students with a card also get into several of them free up to 26. I’ve grouped this with other no-cost ideas in free things to do in Luxembourg.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Luxemburgo on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

Mondays, take care

Almost every museum in the capital closes on Mondays. If your trip includes one, Villa Vauban and Casino Luxembourg are the two exceptions, opening that day and closing on Tuesday instead. It sounds minor, but on a long bank holiday weekend it can leave you without a museum plan.

The 2026 Nuit des Musées

If your dates match, Saturday 10 October 2026 is the 25th Nuit des Musées. From 17:00 to 1:00, seven museums in the capital open late on a single wristband, with shuttles between them. Advance wristbands cost €10, or €3 if you’re 16 to 26; on the night, €15 and €7; under-16s go free. The government portal places it, as a rule, on the second weekend of October.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Luxemburgo on Expedia and filter by area before price.

Small museums worth a detour

Beyond the ranking there are small museums that make sense if you’re already nearby. In the capital, Hollerich’s Tram and Bus Museum charges nothing and opens on Thursday afternoons and at weekends. In Echternach, the abbey museum costs €3 and holds facsimiles of the Codex Epternacensis. And in Esch-sur-Sûre, the cloth-making museum costs €3 and is free for under-21s.

Is the LuxembourgPass worth it?

The national and city museums accept the Luxembourg Card, now the LuxembourgPass, for free entry. The one-day pass costs €23 for one person, so it starts to pay off if you do three or four paid museums on the same day and you’re 26 or over. If you’re younger, the age-based free entry does nearly all the work, and I wouldn’t buy it for the museums alone.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Luxemburgo and pick one that fits your day.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.
