  • Rosport-Mompach has 3,795 residents and 14 localities on the Sûre, facing Germany.
  • Rosport has the Tudor Museum and Luxembourg's only naturally sparkling mineral spring.
  • Girsterklaus chapel is the country's oldest Marian pilgrimage site.
  • The Sûre reservoir offers kayaks, paddleboards and water-skiing, and Trail Route 1 runs through.

If someone in your group is bored of rocks by day two, Rosport is where I'd take them. The Tudor Museum fills an afternoon, the reservoir comes alive in summer, and the village heritage walk tells a story few visitors have heard.

Rosport-Mompach is where the Mullerthal’s sandstone gives way to the broad Sûre valley and the German border. STATEC puts Luxembourg’s easternmost point in Rosport. By local standards it’s a big commune, about 57 km² on my reckoning from STATEC figures, and it hides far more industrial history than its sleepy riverside look suggests.

Fourteen villages and a fizzy spring

On 1 January 2026 the commune had 3,795 residents. The national register lists 14 localities, from Rosport and Mompach to Born, Moersdorf, Girsterklaus and Osweiler, though the regional tourist office talks of fifteen. Rosport can claim something no other village in the country has, Luxembourg’s only naturally sparkling mineral spring. Sources Rosport has bottled it since 1959 as Classic, Blue and Viva, and visitluxembourg says none of it is exported, so drink it while you’re here.

Henri Tudor’s village

The Tudor family opened their accumulator works here. Henri Tudor fitted a dynamo and his own batteries to his father’s mill, and in 1886 he lit the streets of Echternach. The «Sur les traces des Tudors» heritage walk, 2.35 km with 11 stops, covers the 17th-century Irminenhof, the mills, Engelsburg castle where the factory stood, the station, the 1910 school and the English-style park of the «Neit Schlass» of 1892, the house that is now the Tudor Museum. An audio guide is available through izi.travel.

Out on the Sûre

Rosport’s reservoir is the place to get wet in the Mullerthal. visitluxembourg lists water-skiing, a banana boat and hire of kayaks, paddleboards and pedal boats. The other places to paddle are gathered in kayaking in Luxembourg. The Camping du Barrage has an 8 by 18 m outdoor pool, open from mid-May to mid-September, costing non-residents €5 a day for adults. On foot, the Hëlt is a hill encircled by the Sûre and a canal cut to harness the river’s power, wooded on its north side and covered in orchid meadows on its south side, where Luxembourg’s northernmost little vineyard grows. Local path R7 loops round it in 3.5 km.

Girsterklaus, Born and Moersdorf

According to visitluxembourg, Girsterklaus chapel is the oldest Marian pilgrimage site in the country. It has a massive medieval tower that looks like a watchtower, a 13th-century wooden statue of Our Lady of the Hazel and 18th-century baroque figures. In Born, Ramborn Cider Haff presses cider from more than 100 apple varieties grown in local orchards. Riverside Moersdorf is where walkers doing Route 1 of the Mullerthal Trail in stages spend the night.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Echternach before prices climb.

Getting there and staying

The tourist office at 1 rue du Camping opens daily from 09:00 to 19:00 in high season. Since STATEC listed only a single hotel and a single campsite in 2025, the comfortable base is Echternach, where Route 1 starts. To the south, the commune shares a Natura 2000 area with Bech and Manternach.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Echternach and choose by the reviews.

A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.

So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Luxembourg on Omio and pick the one that suits you.
