9.9°C average at Findel
Luxembourg in October, the last easy month before winter
Luxembourg in October averages 9.9°C (50°F) at Findel, with 106.7 hours of sunshine and 76.2 mm of rain. It's the month of the Nuit des Musées (Saturday 10 October 2026), Vianden's walnut market (Sunday 11th) and Schengen's Hunnefeier (Sunday 18th), and also of closures, with the Vianden chairlift running for the last time this season on Monday the 19th.

- October averages 9.9°C at Findel, with 76.2 mm of rain and 106.7 hours of sunshine.
- On 10 October 2026 the Nuit des Musées keeps the capital's museums open from 17:00 to 1:00.
- Vianden holds its walnut market on 11 October 2026 and Schengen ends the harvest with the Hunnefeier on the 18th.
- The Vianden chairlift runs until 19 October 2026; the castle stays open on shorter hours.
October is when I'd pair Luxembourg City by night with Vianden by day. The weekend of 10 and 11 October 2026 does both, museums on the Saturday and walnuts on the Sunday, and I'd keep the north for the first half of the month, before the chairlift stops and the mist settles into the valleys.

01 Most beautiful
The capital's museums, open until 1am
On Saturday 10 October 2026 the city's museums stay open from 17:00 to 1:00 for the Nuit des Musées, with music and dance between the galleries and a single wristband for the lot.

02 My tip
Leave the car outside Vianden
On the second Sunday of October Vianden's centre is closed to traffic from 10:00 to 19:00. Park at the park and ride and take the free shuttle up to the foot of the castle.
Vianden -
03 Getting there
The chairlift stops on 19 October
The Vianden chairlift's 2026 season runs from 4 April to Monday 19 October. If you want the view from the top, make sure your trip lands before then.

04 To save money
Buy the wristband in advance
The Nuit des Musées wristband cost €10 bought ahead and €15 on the night in 2026, according to the city museums' own listing.

What I would book
October is the month Luxembourg can’t quite decide whether it’s still autumn or nearly winter. The first fortnight keeps enough light for walking and a busy calendar, while the second starts shutting things down for the season. For a visitor from Britain it’s the last comfortable month to mix the capital and the countryside in one trip.
Shorter days, more mist, still mild
October averages 9.9°C (50°F) at Findel, almost five degrees down on September. In the city, STATEC puts the average high at 14.7°C and the low at 5.7°C, so afternoons are pleasant and mornings want a jumper. Sunshine drops to 106.7 hours and mist turns up on 7.7 days on average. It’s the wettest month since May, at 76.2 mm, and the capital’s tourist office links this time of year to golden days in the Pétrusse valley as the leaves turn.
The records show how far it can swing. Findel reached 26.0°C on 2 October 2011 and fell to −4.6°C on 27 October 1950. For the whole year side by side, see Luxembourg weather.
A Saturday night in the museums
My favourite date of the month is the Nuit des Musées. In 2026 it’s on Saturday 10 October, from 17:00 to 1:00, with music, dance and live acts across the capital’s museums. One wristband gets you in everywhere, and in 2026 it cost €10 in advance or €15 on the night. I’d pick three or four rather than chase them all, because the queues bunch up at the first ones. You’ll find them ranked in museums in Luxembourg.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Vianden for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
Is Vianden worth it in October?
Yes, for two reasons. The castle stays open, from 1 October 2026 between 10:00 and 17:00, and on the second Sunday of the month (the 11th in 2026) the town holds the Veiner Nëssmoort, its walnut market. Visit Luxembourg talks of up to 20,000 people, which is a lot for a small town in a river valley. The thing to try is Nëssdrëpp, a spirit made by steeping walnuts picked while still green.
That Sunday the centre, rue de la Gare and the Grand-Rue, is shut to cars from 10:00 to 19:00. Use the park and ride and the free shuttle, which drops you at Mont St. Nicolas and the Hotel Oranienburg, right below the castle. If you can, ride the chairlift first, because its 2026 season ends on Monday 19 October. The town itself is covered in Vianden.
The harvest signs off in Schengen
On the Moselle, October closes the wine year. On Sunday 18 October 2026 Schengen holds the Hunnefeier, the end of harvest festival, with a flea market, crafts, vintage tractors and Fiederwäissen, new wine that’s still fermenting. In the old days the quickest harvester was handed a live cockerel; these days the prize is a cockerel shaped by hand in clay. It’s a gentle Sunday out, and I’d add a walk through the yellowing vines. The year’s full programme is in Luxembourg wine festivals.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Vianden for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
What shuts, and what doesn’t
Dates matter now, because the second half of the month switches things off. Parc Merveilleux in Bettembourg ends its 2026 season on Sunday the 11th, the chairlift at Vianden runs for the last time on Monday the 19th, and the butterfly garden in Grevenmacher closes on Saturday the 31st. Mersch Castle’s museum has been appointment only since 1 October. In the capital, the Pfaffenthal panoramic lift stops from 9:00 one day a month for maintenance, and the remaining 2026 dates are Monday 5 October, 2 November and 7 December.
There are no bank holidays in October. Luxembourg’s autumn school break starts on Saturday 31 October and runs to 8 November, and the Glacismaart flea market still runs on the third Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00, as it does from March to November except August.
How I’d plan October
Given the choice, Thursday 8 to Sunday 11 October 2026. Two days in the capital with museum night in the middle, then Vianden on the Sunday for the market and the castle. Flights into Findel are a short tram or bus ride from the centre, and public transport inside the country is free. By rail, Paris is 2 hours 10 minutes away on the direct TGV, so Eurostar with a change in Paris is a realistic alternative to flying. Either way it’s a Schengen entry, which means a passport issued less than ten years ago with at least three months left beyond your departure date, plus fingerprints and a photo for the EES on your first crossing. If you can only go later, I’d do the Moselle on the 18th and sleep in the city. The month before is Luxembourg in September, and the one after, already looking towards Christmas, is Luxembourg in November. The whole season is in Luxembourg in autumn, and if the dates are still open, compare the months in the best time to visit Luxembourg.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Vianden on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
