From a Neanderthal flute to the Isonzo Front

Slovenia's museums, and the ones I would not skip

    Facts checked on

    Neanderthal flute, c. 60,000 years
    Museum capital
    Ljubljana

The Slovenian museums I'd put first are the National Museum in Ljubljana, with a Neanderthal flute of around 60,000 years and the Vače situla, and the Kobarid Museum on the Isonzo Front. After those come the Idrija mercury mine, a World Heritage Site, the Velenje Coal Mining Museum 160 m underground, and the regional museums in Celje, Ptuj and Koper.

    My view on the visit
    Sergio Lepone

I wouldn't try to fit in more than one big museum a day. Spread them along your route, Ljubljana on your city day, Kobarid if you head up the Soča, Idrija or Velenje if you fancy going down a mine, and save the oddities for a second trip.

    My checklist before setting off

The essentials in a few lines

    Full read: 2 min

    • The key museums are in Ljubljana, starting with the National Museum and the National Gallery.
    • The National Museum holds a Neanderthal flute of around 60,000 years and the Vače situla.
    • Beyond the capital, go for Kobarid (Isonzo Front), Idrija (mercury) and Velenje (coal).
    • Niche museums are everywhere, from straw hats in Domžale to space travel in Vitanje.

What I would book for Slovenia

    Before you go

What the official sites leave out

    1. 01 Most beautiful

The Neanderthal flute at the National Museum

The tourist board presents it as the oldest musical instrument in the world, at around 60,000 years. It shares the museum with the Vače situla and gold appliqués from the 13th or 12th century BC found in Lake Bled.

      National Museum of Slovenia
    2. 02 My tip

Ljubljana has the best of them

The National Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art, the Ethnographic Museum, MAO for architecture and design, Plečnik's house and the Computer History Museum. If museums are your thing, give the capital a full day.

      Ljubljana museums
    3. 03 Worth the splurge

Lunch 160 m underground in Velenje

The Velenje Coal Mining Museum takes you 160 m down into a former lignite mine, where the tourist board says you will find the deepest underground dining room. The most hands-on museum in the country.

      Velenje coal mining museum
    4. 04 To save money

The House of the EU is free

In Ljubljana, the Europa Experience multimedia centre at the House of the European Union costs nothing. Handy on a wet afternoon between the old town and the castle.

    My ranking, scored

The Slovenian museums I would see first

My own marks out of 10, weighing the collection, what it tells you about the country and whether you could see anything similar elsewhere. Opinion, not an official rating.

    1. National Museum of Slovenia (Ljubljana)

The Neanderthal flute, the Vače situla, the Lake Bled gold and a dugout canoe from the Ljubljana Marshes. European prehistory in a single building.

      9.4 out of 10

    2. Kobarid Museum

Devoted to the Isonzo Front and its 12th battle, one of the largest mountain battles in history. Part of the Walk of Peace.

      9.2 out of 10

    3. Idrija mercury mine

World Heritage with Almadén in Spain. Anthony's Main Road is, says the tourist board, the oldest preserved mine entrance in Europe.

      9.0 out of 10

    4. Velenje Coal Mining Museum

You go 160 m down into one of the richest lignite seams in the world and eat in an underground dining room.

      8.6 out of 10

    5. Pivka Park of Military History

A submarine you can walk through, a long way from any port. Particularly good with children.

      8.3 out of 10

    6. Celje Regional Museum

In the Counts of Celje's mansion, with Roman remains in the basement and a 30,000-year-old sewing needle from the Potočka zijalka cave.

      8.0 out of 10

    Ljubljana’s museums, where to start

If you visit only one museum on the whole trip, make it the National Museum of Slovenia. The tourist board singles out a Neanderthal flute of around 60,000 years, presented as the world’s oldest musical instrument, the Vače situla, gold appliqués from the 13th or 12th century BC found in Lake Bled and a dugout canoe from the Ljubljana Marshes. It is European prehistory told from a corner most people overlook.

Around it there is plenty more. The National Gallery has the largest collection of Slovenian art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, the Ethnographic Museum lets you try traditional crafts, and MAO, in a small castle by the Ljubljanica, covers architecture and design. I have put them in order in my guide to Ljubljana’s museums, along with Plečnik’s house and smaller ones such as computer history and chocolate.

Mines you can tour, and a submarine

The Velenje Coal Mining Museum goes 160 m down into a former mine in one of the richest lignite seams in the world, complete with an underground dining room. In Mežica, in Koroška, the lead and zinc mine can be explored on foot, by bike or by kayak. And in Pivka, the Park of Military History has a submarine you can climb through, not what you expect in inland Notranjska.

Which museums justify a detour from the capital?

The Kobarid Museum is the one I find most compelling. It tells the story of the Isonzo Front and its 12th battle, one of the largest mountain battles in history, in the very valley where it was fought, and it is part of the Walk of Peace. After it, you look at the Soča Valley differently.

The Idrija mercury mine is World Heritage alongside Almadén in Spain. UNESCO says mercury was found there in 1490, and the tourist board calls Anthony’s Main Road the oldest preserved mine entrance in Europe. Gewerkenegg Castle rounds it off with the town museum and Idrija lace.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Ljubljana on Expedia and filter by area before price.

A regional museum for every area

Every region has its museum and most occupy buildings worth the ticket on their own. In Celje, the counts’ mansion keeps Roman remains and a 30,000-year-old sewing needle. Ptuj Castle has a Roman double flute from the 2nd or 3rd century. In Koper, the Belgramoni Tacco Palace, built around 1600, houses the regional museum. In Kranj, Khislstein Castle brings together over 1,300 exhibits on Gorenjska.

The oddities, for when you have seen the rest

This is my favourite category. The Noordung Centre in Vitanje celebrates Herman Potočnik, who imagined a space station with artificial gravity. Vransko has 140 motorcycles dating from the early 20th century, Žalec an eco-museum of hop-growing with a beer fountain in the town centre, and Domžale a museum of straw hats. At Vrtojba, an eight-metre guard tower claims the title of smallest museum in the country.
