Plečnik's Triple Bridge over the Ljubljanica and the pink Franciscan church on Prešeren Square, framed by trees

Ljubljana can be done in a day on foot, with no transport and about €25-30 in tickets. My plan starts at 8.30am at the central market, walks up to the castle, comes down to the old town via Reber Street, crosses the Triple Bridge, takes in Plečnik's library and the National Gallery, and ends at sunset on the Ljubljanica embankments. Tuesday to Friday works best.

    8.30am to 8pm

Ljubljana in a day, on foot

    1. 8:30

      Central market

Start among the stalls of Vodnik Square and Plečnik's colonnades, when the market is in full swing. Pick up fruit or bread from the stalls for breakfast.

    2. 9:30

      Walk up to the castle

From Vodnik Square, Študentovska pot climbs in about ten minutes. Ticket without the funicular, €15. Viewing tower, Museum of Puppetry and Slovenian history exhibition.

    3. 11:30

Down Reber Street to the old town

Come down Reber Street to Stari trg and walk Gornji trg, Stari trg and Mestni trg, with the copy of the Robba fountain outside the town hall.

    4. 13:00

      Lunch

At the market or, on a fine Friday between March and October, at Odprta kuhna on Pogačar Square, which had more than 65 vendors in 2026.

    5. 14:30

      Triple Bridge and Prešeren Square

Cross the 1842 bridge with Plečnik's footbridges and step down to the terrace by the water before heading on to the library.

    6. 15:00

      National and University Library

On weekdays the staircase, hall and Plečnik corridor are free to visit from 10am to 6pm. Half an hour is enough.

    7. 16:00

      National Gallery

Two hours for the permanent collection, €10, with the original Robba fountain in the entrance hall. It closes at 6pm, or 8pm on Thursdays.

    8. 18:30

      Ljubljanica embankments at sunset

Head back to the river and follow it to the Dragon Bridge, stopping at a riverside terrace to round off the day.

    How I would plan it
    Sergio Lepone

If your day is a Monday, I'd swap the National Gallery, which is closed, for a walk in Tivoli. And if it's a Friday between March and October, I'd save lunch for Odprta kuhna on Pogačar Square; in winter, for one of the gostilnas in the old town.

    What I would book

Morning: from the market to the castle

Start at 8.30am at the Ljubljana Central Market. By then the stalls on Vodnik Square are up and Plečnik’s colonnades by the river are busy. Grab some fruit or bread from the market and look for the start of Študentovska pot, the path that climbs to the castle on foot in about ten minutes.

At Ljubljana Castle I would spend a couple of hours on the viewing tower, 400 m above sea level, and the two museums included in the ticket, the Museum of Puppetry and the one on Slovenian history. Without the funicular it costs €15. To come down, take the Mačja steza path and Reber Street, which ends among the houses at Stari trg.

    Midday: the old town

Once down, walk Gornji trg, Stari trg and Mestni trg, where the copy of the Robba fountain faces the town hall. This is the heart of Ljubljana Old Town, and you see it without going inside anywhere. For lunch, head back to the market; on a fine Friday between March and October, Odprta kuhna on Pogačar Square is better still, with more than 65 vendors in 2026.

After lunch, cross the Triple Bridge and pop down to the terrace by the water. From there it is a few minutes to the National and University Library, whose staircase, hall and Plečnik corridor are free to see on weekdays. Half an hour is enough.

Carry on to the National Gallery and give the permanent collection two hours; it costs €10 and the original Robba fountain stands in the entrance hall. It closes at 6pm, or 8pm on Thursdays.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Liubliana on Expedia and filter by area before price.

    Sunset: the Ljubljanica embankments

Finish where you began, by the water. Follow the embankments of the Ljubljanica river to the Dragon Bridge and pick a riverside terrace. If you still have energy, the sightseeing boat leaves from the centre in season and makes a 45-minute loop that turns right at that bridge. In December the river and squares fill with lights and stalls, which transforms the evening walk.

If you land on a Monday or a weekend

On a Monday, swap the National Gallery for Tivoli Park, which is free. On a Saturday, the library opens from 2.30pm to 6pm and charges €5, but in return shows you the great reading room. With more time, carry on with Ljubljana in two days.
