Where Dravograd is
The Julian Alps, Triglav and the Soča valley lie to the north-west; Ljubljana sits in the centre; the Karst, its caves and the 47 km of coast are to the south-west, and Maribor, Ptuj and the Prekmurje plains to the east. Every number opens its guide.

Dravograd is the town where the Drava enters Slovenia and is joined by the Meža and the Mislinja: 3,120 people, at the head of a municipality of 8,773 (SURS, 1 January 2026). It's recorded in 1185 with its castle and St Vitus church, lived for centuries off the river and its rafts, and is now a stop on the Drava cycle route, with a lake known for its birds.
Dravograd is a stop for anyone travelling the Drava valley by bike or car. I'd see the museum collection at the tourist office to understand why this meeting of valleys mattered, and walk by the lake looking for birds.

Radlje ob Dravi
A town at a meeting of valleys
SURS puts Dravograd at 3,120 residents and its municipality at 8,773 on 1 January 2026. It recorded 8,549 arrivals in 2025. It’s one of the gateways to Koroška, between Austria to the north and Slovenj Gradec to the south, and from here the Meža valley climbs towards Ravne na Koroškem.
What its history tells
The Koroška Regional Museum explains that Dravograd appears in 1185 as a market town with a castle on the hill, two manor houses, the church of St Vitus, a bridge and a toll house. It was one of the leading market towns of the Drava valley and among the oldest in Slovenia. Crafts and trade grew early thanks to the navigable river, and until the Second World War boats and rafts carried timber and other goods down to Belgrade.
In the 13th century the Bukovje lordship was founded on the right bank of the Drava, and in the later 15th century the town, by then walled, was threatened by the Turks and the Hungarian army. In the 16th century Protestantism spread quickly among its people. By the mid-17th century it had about 70 houses and roughly 450 inhabitants inside and outside its walls. In 1848 it became a municipality, and in 1863 the railway from Maribor to Klagenfurt was completed, turning it into an important rail and road junction with a large river port. The same museum notes that the town was hit hard by the Second World War, and that in 1991, during the war of independence, there was fighting nearby.
That story is told in a permanent collection the museum has displayed since December 2007 in the tourist office in the centre. For me it’s the best first stop.
The lake and dravite
Lake Dravograd, on the river itself, shelters over 150 bird species as well as beavers, according to the tourist board. Nearby lies the classic deposit of the mineral dravite, and the same source counts this site among the five most important in the world.

Cycling the Drava
The Drava cycle route, which koroska.si rates as one of the most beautiful in Europe, passes through. It covers 510 km from where the Drava rises, at Toblach in Italy, to where it meets the Mura in Croatia, and the Slovenian section is 145 km long. Downstream lie Radlje ob Dravi, Maribor and, at the end of the Slovenian Drava, Ormož. I’d stay a night here if cycling, and stop off on the way through if driving.
