Five days in Slovenia, from Alpine lakes to Karst caves

    Facts checked on
    Length
    5 days

    5

Slovenia in 5 days lets you combine the best of the Julian Alps and the Karst. I'd do Ljubljana, Bled with Vintgar, Bohinj, Postojna with Predjama and, to finish, the Škocjan Caves (World Heritage since 1986) with the Lipica stud farm. Two nights by the lakes and three in Ljubljana, with no drive much over 80 km.

    5 days

Five days between the Julian Alps and the Karst

    1. Day 1

      Ljubljana

Arrive and walk the pedestrian centre, the river and Plečnik's bridges. Funicular up to the castle, €19 at the desk. Night in Ljubljana.

    2. Day 2

      Bled and Vintgar

50 km from the capital. Morning in Vintgar Gorge (April to October, time slot needed); afternoon on the pletna to the island and up to Bled Castle. Night in Bled.

    3. Day 3

      Bohinj and Savica Falls

About 26 km to the lake. Savica drops 78 metres in two streams; if the Vogel cable car is running, you get the view of Triglav from the top. Night in Bled.

    4. Day 4

      Postojna and Predjama

Down to the inland Karst. A guided cave visit of an hour and a half with the train, then Predjama Castle in its 123-metre rock face. Night in Ljubljana.

    5. Day 5

      Škocjan and Lipica

The Škocjan Caves at Divača and, about 10 km away, the Lipica stud farm, open 9am to 5pm. Back to Ljubljana or on to Trieste.

    How I would plan it
    Sergio Lepone

Five days is, in my view, the minimum for Slovenia to show its range. The two days beyond a short break give you Bohinj, wilder than Bled, and Škocjan, the cave I wouldn't skip.

How to do it, in order

    1. Ljubljana

A first day in the capital, then pick up the car and drive up to Bled for two nights.

      Day 1

    2. Bled, Vintgar and Bohinj

Vintgar Gorge in the morning, Bled in the afternoon, and a whole day for the wilder lake at Bohinj.

      Days 2-3

    3. Postojna and Predjama

Back towards Ljubljana via the cave and the castle in the rock.

      Day 4

    4. Škocjan and Lipica

The World Heritage caves of Škocjan and the stud farm at Lipica to close the trip.

      Day 5

    In 30 seconds

    Full read: 2 min

    • Day 1 Ljubljana, day 2 Bled and Vintgar, day 3 Bohinj, day 4 Postojna and Predjama, day 5 Škocjan and Lipica.
    • Two nights in Bled and three in Ljubljana.
    • No leg is longer than about 80 km by road.
    • Best from April to October, when Vintgar is open.

    Before you go

What the official sites leave out

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      Bohinj, the bigger lake

The Tourist Board describes it as Slovenia's largest natural lake, glacial in origin and inside Triglav National Park. The Church of St John the Baptist on the shore is the photo I'd go for.

      Lake Bohinj
    2. 02 Most beautiful

      Škocjan, a canyon underground

UNESCO inscribed it in 1986 for an underground canyon carved by the River Reka, with passages up to 150 metres high. The Martel Chamber holds more than two million cubic metres.

      Škocjan Caves
    3. 03 My tip

Vintgar opens April to October only

The gorge has 1.6 km of boardwalks on a 5.7 km circuit taking two and a half to three hours. Its website asks for a digital pass with a time slot; paper tickets are sold only at the P1 car park.

      Vintgar Gorge
    4. 04 Worth the splurge

      Lipizzaners at home

Lipica, founded in 1580, is the cradle of the Lipizzaner horse and keeps more than 300 of them. It opens 9am to 5pm with guided tours, and tickets start at €25.

What I would book for Slovenia

Where to stay, Bled and Ljubljana

I split the nights. For the first two mountain days I’d stay in Bled, about fifty kilometres out of the capital, with Vintgar and Bohinj close by. For the Karst I’d go back to Ljubljana, from where Postojna is about 54 km and Divača, the gateway to Škocjan, about 78 km by road, figures I’ve worked out with OpenStreetMap data. If you’d rather not change hotels, five nights in the capital works too, though the Alpine days get longer. Some ideas on areas are in where to stay in Ljubljana.

Days 1 to 3, Ljubljana, Bled and Bohinj

I’d start the Bled day at Vintgar Gorge, open only from April to October, with 1.6 km of boardwalks above the River Radovna on a 5.7 km circuit. Its website asks for a digital pass with a time slot, so I wouldn’t turn up without one. In the afternoon, the island by pletna and the castle. Next day, Bohinj, Slovenia’s largest natural lake according to the Tourist Board, with the Church of St John the Baptist on the shore and Savica Falls, 78 metres in two streams. The Vogel cable car’s website said it would stay closed for maintenance until 1 December 2026, so check it’s running before you count on it. The whole valley is covered in Bohinj.

Days 4 and 5, Postojna and Škocjan

People often treat Postojna and Škocjan as either-or, and I don’t see it that way. Postojna is a cave of formations you tour by train, with an hour-and-a-half guided visit and tickets only from its official site, and next door Predjama is the castle set into a 123-metre cliff. Škocjan works on another scale. UNESCO inscribed it in 1986 to protect a canyon the Reka cut underground, in places as tall as a forty-storey building. Its prices weren’t on any page I consulted, so look them up on the park’s own site. There’s more in the Škocjan Caves.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Bled on Expedia and filter by area before price.

The last day, Lipica or the coast

From Divača the Lipica stud farm is about 10 km away. Founded in 1580, it’s the cradle of the Lipizzaner, keeps more than 300 horses and opens from 9am to 5pm with guided tours, tickets from €25. If you’re more of a seaside person, I’d swap Lipica for Piran, about 49 km from Divača, and carry on to Trieste from there or head back to the capital.

If you have a sixth day

With six or seven days I’d add the Soča Valley and the Vršič Pass, which to me is the most beautiful road in the country, plus a night on the coast. That’s the trip in Slovenia in a week. And if you only have three, the essentials fit into Slovenia in 3 days.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Bled on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

    Test yourself

    True or false?

    0/3 Pick before you peek.

    1. Lake Bohinj is bigger than Lake Bled.

      See the answer

True. The Tourist Board describes Bohinj as Slovenia's largest natural lake, glacial in origin.

    2. Vintgar Gorge is open all year round.

      See the answer

False. According to its website, it opens from April to October, with hours that change with the season and the weather.

    3. The Škocjan Caves have been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1986.

      See the answer

True. They were inscribed that year as a natural site covering 413 hectares in the municipalities of Divača and Sežana.

Slovenia in 5 days: questions and answers

What should I see in Slovenia in 5 days?

Ljubljana, Bled with Vintgar Gorge, Lake Bohinj with Savica Falls, Postojna Cave with Predjama, and the Škocjan Caves with Lipica. That's the balance between Alps and Karst I'd aim for.

Where should I stay on a five-day Slovenia trip?

Two nights in Bled for the lake days and three in Ljubljana as a base for the Karst. If you'd rather not move, Ljubljana alone works too, with more driving on the Alpine days.

Do I need a car for 5 days in Slovenia?

It isn't essential, but it helps for Bohinj and Škocjan. The Tourist Board lists Bled, Postojna and Predjama as easy coach trips from Ljubljana; if you drive, you need the DARS e-vignette for motorways.

Isn't doing Postojna and Škocjan on one trip a bit repetitive?

Not really. Postojna is a cave of formations you tour by train; Škocjan, according to UNESCO, is an underground canyon cut by the River Reka. They feel quite different, and with five days I'd do both.

When is the best time for this 5-day route?

April to October, because Vintgar Gorge only opens in those months and Bled Castle keeps its long hours, until 8pm. In winter I'd swap it for skiing or Ljubljana's festive December.
