National Museum of Slovenia, museum of domestic life
Snežnik Castle, a 19th-century hunting lodge left as it was
- Saturday and Sunday
- 11:00–15:00
- Adult ticket
- €8 (family €16)
Snežnik Castle, at Stari trg pri Ložu in the Lož Valley, 69 km from Ljubljana, is visited as the hunting residence of the princes of Schönburg-Waldenburg, with genuine 19th-century furniture. The National Museum of Slovenia runs it, guided tours only: €8 for adults, €16 for families. From November to March it opens on Saturdays and Sundays only, 11am to 3pm.
If you prefer houses that still feel lived in to empty fortresses, this is your castle. I'd pair it with Lake Cerknica on the same day and check the hours first, because in winter it only opens at weekends.

The practical bit
Worth knowing about Snežnik Castle
-
01 Most beautiful
Four floors as they were 150 years ago
The National Museum describes the parlours and bedrooms of Princes Herman and Ulrich and Princess Ana, with original upholstered suites, ornamental stoves, a piano, a billiard table and a theatre corner.
-
02 To save money
The park is free
Entry to the park, with its pond, tree-lined avenues and statue of Diana, goddess of the hunt, costs nothing. You only pay for the castle interior.
-
03 My tip
No photos inside
The museum does not allow photography or filming inside, nor dogs or large bags. Take your picture of the castle reflected in the pond instead.
-
04 Getting there
The road in runs via Cerknica
From Ljubljana (69 km) or Postojna (43 km), the museum gives the A1 motorway to the Unec exit, then Rakek, Cerknica and Stari trg pri Ložu. Free parking is 100 m away.
Notranjska
From medieval stronghold to hunting lodge
The National Museum explains that the Romans already had a fort at this strategic spot on the edge of the Lož Valley. The lords of Snežnik appear in the 13th century, and over the following centuries the castle passed through Carniola’s leading families, the Lambergs, the Eggenbergs and the Auerspergs among them, becoming an administrative seat for this part of Notranjska in the 17th century.
The turning point came in 1853, when the Saxon princely family of Schönburg-Waldenburg bought the estate and its vast forests and turned it into a summer and hunting residence. The stone-faced bailey and the towers you see today date from then. In 1867 Prince George became patron of the first Slovenian forestry school, hunting of rare animals was banned and a steam saw kick-started the valley’s timber industry. When the Second World War ended, it was the last estate manager, Leon Schauta, who kept the castle from being destroyed.
What to see inside Snežnik Castle
After careful restoration, the National Museum opened it in 2008 as a museum of domestic life. The tour covers four floors furnished with original pieces from the late 1800s, the parlours and bedrooms of Princes Herman and Ulrich and Princess Ana, and guest rooms with their original upholstered suites and ornamental stoves. There is an Egyptian room from the early 20th century, a black dining room and plenty of hunting trophies, including a stuffed bear that has now passed its hundredth year in the house.
In the lower hall you will find Roman tombstones built into the walls and a large copperplate map of Carniola from 1744, and the museum highlights a 17th-century leather altar frontal from the neighbouring church at Šmarata. Outside, under the wooden gallery, is a dugout boat of the kind locals used to cross flooded meadows.
The park, free to wander
The white castle is mirrored in a spring-fed pond full of mallards, surrounded by a large park of tree-lined avenues and clearings, with a statue of Diana. The park is free, although swimming in the pond and the stream is not allowed. In spring there are daffodils by the water. The European E6 long-distance path and the local Krpan trail both pass the castle, and Križna jama cave is not far.

Winter hours, tickets and rules
From 1 November 2026 until 31 March 2027 tours run on Saturdays and Sundays only, 11:00 to 15:00; in October there were weekday slots as well. The full timetable is in the table. An adult ticket is €8, less than half the price of the big-name castles, and every visit is guided. Photography, dogs and large bags are not allowed inside. Only the ground floor and the park are wheelchair accessible.
Snežnik and Lake Cerknica in a day
It lies in the south of Notranjska, and the natural route from Ljubljana passes Cerknica, so I would combine Lake Cerknica and the castle in one day. From Postojna Cave, the museum gives 43 km. To compare it with the rest, my guide to castles in Slovenia lists the ones I would visit and what each costs. Do not confuse it with Mount Snežnik, the 1,796 m summit rising further south near Ilirska Bistrica and another of the great landscapes of Slovenia.
