Šmarješke Toplice is a Terme Krka spa in south-east Slovenia built for long, health-focused stays: its thermal water is used to treat cardiovascular conditions and it runs seven-night medical programmes. In 2025 it logged 120,722 overnight stays, more than six nights per visitor. The village has 707 people and lies at 169 m, just over an hour from Ljubljana.

    How I would do it

I'd only come to Šmarješke Toplice with a clear plan, a week of rest or one of its health programmes. For a couple of days in the pools I'd compare other spas first, and if I stayed I'd book the Vitarium treatments well ahead.

    The practical bit

    Worth knowing about Šmarješke Toplice

    1. 01 Worth the splurge

      An award-winning programme

The European Spas Association gave Terme Krka its Innovation Award for ImmunoRebalance, a seven-night immune-system programme run at the Vitarium Spa & Clinique.

    2. 02 Money

      What a week costs

The seven-night medical programmes start at roughly €2,067 to €2,334 per person in a double room for single use, according to the spa's website in October 2026.

    3. 03 To save money

      Autumn and winter packages

From 16 October 2026 to early January 2027 there are stays from about €103 per person per night with pools and saunas, according to Terme Krka. Compare before booking nights separately.

    Bookings I would make

    A spa for long stays

According to SURS, the village has 707 residents and the municipality 3,606 on 1 January 2026. Its 2025 tally was 18,106 arrivals and 120,722 overnight stays, more than six nights per visitor. That tells you what kind of place this is in Dolenjska. Most guests come for a long week.

Terme Krka puts it at 169 m above sea level, among forests and meadows, about 80 km from Ljubljana, just over an hour by car.

    The seven-night programmes

This is what really sets Šmarješke Toplice apart. There are three long programmes under medical supervision. SlimFit is for weight loss with guided exercise and diet, VitaDetox combines fasting, diet and treatments, and ImmunoRebalance aims to strengthen the immune system. That last one won the European Spas Association Innovation Award in the health-oriented spa programme category, which the spa displays prominently on its website.

They aren’t cheap. In October 2026 they started at €2,066.75 to €2,333.73 per person in a double room for single use. The rest packages, with pools, the sauna world and meals, began at around €103 per person per night between 16 October and early January 2027.

    Thermal water and the heart

Because of its medical use. According to the spa, the team at the Vitarium Spa & Clinique has long treated cardiovascular conditions with this water, and Terme Krka bills the Vitarium as Slovenia’s first medical wellness centre. Alongside the water, it stresses the benefits of the local climate and the Dolenjska countryside.

Is it worth it for a short stay?

If you’re after a health programme, this is the place, and it deserves the full week. If you just want pools for a couple of days, I’d first compare it with the bigger, more family-minded spas in Slovenia. And on a longer stay, an afternoon in Novo mesto makes a change of scene, and Trebnje, with its gallery of self-taught artists, is close by too.

    Food and walks

The kitchen uses produce from organic and integrated farming, and the spa’s nutritionists prepare tailored meal plans. Away from the water, Terme Krka advertises new walking and cycling trails. The tourist board also suggests the Sava Krka Bike route through the vineyard hills linking the two spas, and the River Krka is close enough for a half-day outing. Vitarium treatments are booked by phone through the spa, and in busy weeks it pays to call well before you arrive.
