Ljubljana Central Market from the castle, with colourful stall awnings, Plečnik's colonnade and red rooftops

Ljubljana Central Market is open Monday to Saturday: in winter the outdoor stalls run from 6am to 4pm, and the covered market from 7am to 4pm on weekdays and until 2pm on Saturdays. It spreads across Plečnik's riverside colonnades, the covered market on Pogačar Square and the open-air stalls of Vodnik Square. From March to October, on fine Fridays, Odprta kuhna takes over.

    Worth knowing about Central Market

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      Plečnik's colonnades

The market halls with four arcades, the colonnade and the Zvonček shop along the Ljubljanica are Plečnik's work and part of the embankments and bridges on the World Heritage list.

    2. 02 My tip

Its 14th season opened on 20 March 2026 on Pogačar Square, with more than 65 vendors and over 280 dishes, every fine Friday until October.

    3. 03 To save money

      A cheap picnic

Seasonal fruit, cheese and bread from the market are the cheapest lunch in the centre. Add a bench by the river and you are sorted.

    4. 04 Worth the splurge

      Summer evenings in the colonnade

From 1 June to 31 August, Plečnik's colonnade also opens every day from 7pm to 11pm, according to the market's official hours.

    What I would buy

I'd go on a Saturday morning, when the market is at its most genuine, with growers at their stalls and the city doing its weekly shop. If you're there on a spring or summer Friday, I'd come back in the evening for Odprta kuhna, a different crowd and a different mood in the same place.

What I would book for Ljubljana

Central Market opening times and when to go

The outdoor market opens Monday to Saturday from 6am to 4pm between October and March, staying open until 6pm on summer weekdays. The covered market and Plečnik’s arcades run Monday to Friday from 7am to 4pm and on Saturdays from 7am to 2pm all year. On Sundays only Pogačar Square and Dolničarjeva open, from April to November, from 9am to 6pm. In December Pogačar Square stays open daily until midnight for the Christmas market, and in summer the colonnade also opens from 7pm to 11pm. Each trader picks their own hours within those windows, so earlier is always better.

What to buy at the market

According to LPT, nearly everything. Fruit and vegetables, mushrooms and forest berries, meat and charcuterie, dairy, flowers, plants and medicinal herbs, plus woodenware, pottery, souvenirs and clothes. The market follows the calendar. Spring brings the first vegetables and flowers, autumn is when people stock up for winter, and in winter it is ham, sausages and sauerkraut. If you want local produce to take home, it beats any shop in the centre.

    Colonnades, covered hall and stalls

The city’s market operator, LPT, describes three parts. Plečnik’s market halls, with four arcades, a colonnade and the Zvonček shop, on the Adamič-Lundrovo embankment at numbers 2 to 7. The covered market in the old seminary building at Pogačarjev trg 1. And the outdoor market, which spreads across Vodnik Square, Pogačar Square and Dolničarjeva Street.

The riverside colonnades are my favourite part. Plečnik lined them up with the Ljubljanica, and since 2021 they have been on the World Heritage list as part of the riverside works covered by Plečnik’s works in Ljubljana. Between two of the arcades the Butchers’ Bridge sets off, opened in 2010 on the spot where Plečnik had once planned one.

    Odprta kuhna on Fridays

On fine Fridays from March to October, Pogačar Square becomes Odprta kuhna, a street-food market. Season fourteen got going on 20 March 2026, bringing together more than 65 stalls that serve anything from home-style Slovenian recipes to dishes from across the globe, with craft beer and wine. A third of the stalls were new. For sit-down meals, try where to eat in Ljubljana.

Fitting it into a Ljubljana visit

The market sits between the cathedral and the river, with the Dragon Bridge at one end and the Triple Bridge a few minutes away. From Vodnik Square, Študentovska pot also climbs on foot to Ljubljana Castle in about ten minutes. I would do all three one Saturday morning. Right next to the stalls is Ljubljana Cathedral, worth a quick look before or after your shopping.
