Topolšica is a spa village in the Šalek valley, in Šoštanj municipality: 1,372 people and Terme Topolšica, with indoor and outdoor thermal pools among wooded hills and the Karavanke behind. It's a place to rest for a few days, with the Bahor pottery centre, tourist farms nearby, and Velenje and its Coal Mining Museum a few minutes away.

    How I would do it

Topolšica is for switching off, not for nightlife. I'd spend two or three nights at the spa, do a workshop at Bahor and an afternoon in Velenje, and in spring or summer walk out towards Lom.

The oldest spa in the country

Dobrna, 16 km north of Celje, has what the tourist board calls the oldest working spa in Slovenia, with thermal water used for healing since 1403.

What I would book for Topolšica

    Terme Topolšica, the spa

It’s a spa hotel for people seeking peace in the middle of nature, according to the tourist board. It has indoor and outdoor pools, saunas and relaxing massages by experienced therapists. Rooms include unlimited use of the hotel’s pools and saunas, with views of the park, and in early 2026 the spa renovated its pool terrace. There are also new four-star rooms and offers for families and for getaways with a friend or your mother.

Two or three nights in Topolšica

I’d happily stay two or three nights, splitting the days between the hills, Šoštanj and Velenje, home to the lake with its beach and the Coal Mining Museum. In summer, the Lake Velenje beach offers swimming, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, football, beach volleyball, basketball and tennis, mini golf and free loungers, and every September the town holds the Pippi Festival, Slovenia’s largest children’s festival. Of all the spas in Slovenia, Topolšica feels among the most secluded and peaceful.

    Pottery and butterflies

At the Bahor Pottery Centre you can see how Slovenian majolica and the Kofetar’ca, a traditional coffee cup, are made, and shape a piece of your own in a workshop. The shop sells pieces as souvenirs of the valley. Near Lom, the tourist board points to the place in Slovenia where you’ll see the most butterflies together.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Topolšica on Expedia and filter by area before price.

    Farms and the outdoors

Around the spa there are cycle routes of varying difficulty, and the tourist board suggests spending a few days on the valley’s tourist farms, where there’s always home cooking on the table. At the Lamperček farm you can feed the deer, at the Apat farm help bake bread and at the Karničnik farm look after the horses. For the more active, the destination has the Alpine Association of Slovenia’s first via ferrata learning ground, on a rock face beside the Gonžar homestead, where climbers practise moving safely in high mountains.

    Recent history

On 9 May 1945 one of the German army’s four partial surrenders was signed in Topolšica, and a memorial room records it. According to valley tourism, for Slovenes that date marked the end of the Second World War.
