The stone village of Štanjel on its hill, with the castle, cypresses and the pointed bell tower under a blue sky

    Village ranking

Slovenia's most charming villages and small towns

    Facts checked on

The prettiest villages in Slovenia, to my mind, are along the Italian border and in the Karst. Štanjel, with its castle and 366 people; Šmartno, Brda's fortified village; Vipavski Križ, the smallest town in the empire in the Middle Ages; and Piran on the coast. Near the lakes, Radovljica, with the country's only surviving defensive moat, and Kropa, the cradle of ironworking.

Prettiest villages in Slovenia: the quick answer

    Full read: 2 min

    • Piran is the prettiest place on the coast and Štanjel the pick of the Karst.
    • Šmartno and Vipavski Križ are Goriška's two fortified villages.
    • Radovljica and Kropa are a short hop from Bled.

I'd see them by car and without rushing, because what they have is atmosphere, and atmosphere needs time. Štanjel, Vipavski Križ and Šmartno fit into a day from the coast or Nova Gorica, and they say more to me than many Alpine villages.

    Sergio LeponeMy advice

    My ranking, scored

Slovenia's 12 prettiest villages and small towns

My score out of 10 for villages and small towns, not cities, based on how well preserved the whole place is, its setting and how different each one feels. Population figures are SURS 2026; everything else is from the Tourist Board.

    1. Piran

Medieval walls, Tartini Square and St George's church above the sea, in a town of 3,678 people. The prettiest place on the coast.

      9.4 out of 10

    2. Štanjel

A medieval Karst stone village with a castle, the Lojze Spacal gallery and Maks Fabiani's touch. 366 residents in the municipality of Komen.

      9.1 out of 10

    3. Šmartno (Brda)

A fortified medieval village among the vines, with frescoes by Tone Kralj and the traditional Briška hiša house. Population 191.

      8.9 out of 10

    4. Vipavski Križ

With 152 residents, it was the smallest town in the empire in the Middle Ages, according to the Tourist Board. It is still walled.

      8.7 out of 10

    5. Radovljica

A medieval centre with the only surviving defensive moat in Slovenia and the Beekeeping Museum, 8 km from Bled.

      8.5 out of 10

    6. Kropa

The cradle of Slovenian ironworking, with its museum, in the municipality of Radovljica. Population 760.

      8.3 out of 10

    7. Stara Fužina

By Lake Bohinj, with 580 residents, in Bohinj, which the Tourist Board places inside Triglav National Park. The picture-book Alpine village.

      8.2 out of 10

    8. Hrastovlje

A hamlet of 148 people whose Holy Trinity church holds the Dance of Death, one of the best-preserved frescoes on the theme.

      8.0 out of 10

    9. Olimje

295 residents, a Minorite monastery with the third-oldest pharmacy in Europe and a chocolate maker, next to Terme Olimia.

      7.8 out of 10

    10. Rateče

In the upper Sava valley, population 635, next to Planica and the Kajžnk house, which the Tourist Board calls the country's first escape museum.

      7.6 out of 10

    11. Bogojina

549 residents in Prekmurje and Plečnik's church, the best-known place of worship in Pomurje according to the Tourist Board.

      7.5 out of 10

    12. Jeruzalem

46 people high in the Ljutomer vineyard hills. It's more a viewpoint over the vines than a village, which is exactly why I like it.

    The practical bit

What the official sites leave out

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      Štanjel, Karst stone

A medieval stone village with a castle and the mark of architect Maks Fabiani, who served as its mayor, according to the Tourist Board. It has 366 residents.

      Štanjel
    2. 02 My tip

Three fortified villages in one morning

Šmartno in Brda and Vipavski Križ in the Vipava Valley are both in Goriška. I'd link them with Štanjel on a single drive.

      Šmartno
    3. 03 To save money

      Wandering a village costs nothing

None of these old centres charges entry. What you pay for is museums, such as Kropa's ironworking museum or Radovljica's beekeeping museum.

free things to do in Slovenia

    Bookings I would make

    Goriška, my favourite villages

Goriška is my favourite area for villages. In Brda, among the vines, Šmartno is a fortified medieval village with frescoes by Tone Kralj and the Briška hiša, the traditional local house. In the Vipava Valley, Vipavski Križ keeps its walls and an odd claim to fame, because the Tourist Board says that in the Middle Ages it was the smallest town in the empire. Neither reaches 200 inhabitants. If you like this kind of place, the perfect plan is to link them with Štanjel and finish at a winery in Brda.

Gorenjska, a stone’s throw from the lakes

Close to Bled there are villages most people drive straight past. Radovljica, 8 km away, has a medieval centre with the only surviving defensive moat in Slovenia and the Beekeeping Museum, which holds the largest collection of painted beehive panels. Kropa, in the same municipality, is the cradle of Slovenian ironworking and keeps its museum. Further west, Stara Fužina, with 580 residents, is the Alpine village by Lake Bohinj that turns up in all the valley photos. Up the Sava valley, Rateče, next to Planica, has the Kajžnk house. I go into Radovljica in detail in Radovljica. Landscapes, with no villages involved, are ranked in the most beautiful places in Slovenia.

Piran and Štanjel, coast and Karst

Piran comes first because no other place on the coast hangs together so well, with its patches of medieval wall, the square named after Giuseppe Tartini, the violinist who was born in the town, and St George’s keeping watch from the top. Inland the scenery switches abruptly to stone, and that’s where you find Štanjel, a medieval stone village with its castle, the touch of architect Maks Fabiani, who was its mayor, and the Lojze Spacal gallery. Near Koper, the hamlet of Hrastovlje keeps the Dance of Death inside its church, one of the best-preserved frescoes on the subject. I’d see them in a morning from the coast, and I cover the rest of the hinterland in Slovenian Istria.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Piran on Expedia and filter by area before price.

The east, in a different light

In the east the villages belong to plains and vineyard hills. Olimje, population 295, has a Minorite monastery with the third-oldest pharmacy in Europe, according to the Tourist Board, plus a chocolate maker. In Prekmurje, Bogojina holds Plečnik’s church, which the same source calls the best-known place of worship in Pomurje. And Jeruzalem, with only 46 people, is more a viewpoint over the Ljutomer vines than a village, but I’d put the view among the best in Slovenia.

    By car, without rushing

By car and without rushing. These villages don’t work well on a multi-stop coach tour, because what they have is atmosphere, and atmosphere asks you to linger. I’d use them as breaks between the big sights, Štanjel on the way to the coast, Radovljica on the way to Bled, Olimje between spa stops.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Piran and pick one that fits your day.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Piran on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the prettiest village in Slovenia?

For me it's Piran, on the coast. If you're after a small inland village, Štanjel in the Karst, with its castle and 366 residents.

Which pretty villages are near Bled?

Radovljica, 8 km away according to the Tourist Board, with its medieval centre and moat; Kropa, the cradle of ironworking; and, heading west, Stara Fužina by Lake Bohinj.

Are there medieval villages in Slovenia?

Yes. Štanjel, Šmartno in Brda, Vipavski Križ and Radovljica's old centre are the ones I'd single out, all with part of their walls or defences intact.

What are the best towns in Slovenia for a short stop?

Radovljica on the way to Bled, Štanjel on the way to the coast and Olimje between spa towns. Each is enough for an hour or two without a ticket.

Can you see several villages in one day?

Yes, in Goriška. Šmartno and Vipavski Križ are in the same region and Štanjel is in the neighbouring Karst, so a day's drive covers all three.
