Kurentovanje 2027 grand parade
Ptuj
Kurentovanje in Ptuj runs from 3 to 9 February 2027, its 67th edition, with the grand parade on Sunday 7 February at noon in the old town. It's Ptuj's carnival and, according to its organisers, the largest international carnival festival in Slovenia. Its star is the Kurent, whose door-to-door rounds have been on UNESCO's intangible heritage list since 2017.

- Ptuj's carnival, the largest in Slovenia according to its organisers.
- The Kurents' rounds have been UNESCO intangible heritage since 2017.
- The 2027 festival runs from 3 to 9 February.
- The grand parade is on Sunday 7 February at 12:00.
If you can only make one day, make it parade Sunday, but I'd arrive on the Saturday. I'd watch the early-evening displays on Mestni trg, where the Kurents pass close by without the crush, and book a room as soon as I'd decided, because Ptuj is small.

Before you go
What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
The Kurent leap at midnight
The festival opens on the night of Tuesday 2 to Wednesday 3 February 2027. At midnight, by the fire, the Kurents put on their bells for the first time and start driving winter away.
-
02 My tip
The evening displays beat the parade
On Thursday and Friday at 18:00 traditional carnival characters are shown on Mestni trg. It's your chance to see the Kurents and their rituals up close, with fewer people than on Sunday.
-
03 Worth the splurge
Dress up on Saturday
At 11:00 on Saturday 6 February the carnival corso sets off, the one chance to put on a costume and parade with townsfolk, Romans, medieval merchants, Kurents and Korants.
-
04 To save money
The Kurent House, all year
If you can't make the carnival, the Kurent House explains the character and its rituals with interactive displays. In summer it opens Wednesday to Sunday, except Thursday, from 12:00 to 18:00.
Ptuj -
05 Getting there
Another carnival of wooden masks
In Cerkno, 25 laufarji in limewood masks try and execute the Pust every Shrove Tuesday; the laufarija has been on the intangible heritage register since 2012.
Cerkno carnival (laufarji) -
06 Getting there
The witches of Cerknica
Beside its disappearing lake, Cerknica holds a carnival built around the witches who, legend says, live on Mount Slivnica.

What I would book for Ptuj
How to do it, in order
-
Book early
Ptuj is a small town and fills up during carnival, so book a room as soon as you know your dates.
3-9 Feb 2027
-
Arrive on Saturday
Come the day before the parade and watch the early-evening displays on Mestni trg, where the Kurents pass close by.
-
Pick a spot on the route
On Sunday watch the grand parade from a stretch of the route rather than the main square, where the crowd is thickest.
Sun 7 Feb, 12:00
Kurentovanje 2027 programme, day by day
The opening is the most atmospheric moment. At midnight between Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 February, beside a fire, the Kurents put on their bells for the first time. On Wednesday at 18:00 hundreds of Kurents and Korants pack Mestni trg for their own day, which includes the handover of power.
On Thursday and Friday at 18:00 there are displays of traditional characters on Mestni trg, and on Friday at 20:00 a night spectacle with fire and Krampuses. Saturday 6 brings the Kurent market on Novi trg, the carnival corso at 11:00 and a children’s party at 15:00. The highlight is Sunday 7 at 12:00, the grand international ethnographic and carnival parade, with thousands of figures. On Tuesday 9, carnival is buried at 13:00.
What Ptuj’s carnival is
It’s the carnival of Ptuj, billed by its organisers as the country’s largest international carnival festival. For a week the town becomes, in their words, the biggest open-air ethnographic museum of intangible heritage. Lonely Planet named it one of the ten most interesting carnivals in the world, alongside Venice, Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans. The 67th edition takes place from 3 to 9 February 2027.
Its roots run deep. The festival’s website explains that carnival comes from pre-Christian celebrations welcoming spring and seeing off winter, and that pust, the Slovenian word for carnival, comes from «mesopust», giving up meat.
The Kurent, the figure who sees off winter
The Kurent, or Korant, is Slovenia’s most numerous and best-known carnival character, rooted in the Ptuj and Drava plains, Haloze and the Slovenske Gorice. In folk belief it chases away everything bad and brings good luck, and it has been documented since at least 1880. Some Kurents wear horns, others feathers, and Visit Ptuj says the association that brings them together has 25 societies and more than 1,100 members.
Their door-to-door rounds joined Slovenia’s intangible heritage register in 2012, were declared of national importance by the government in 2015 and were inscribed by UNESCO in 2017. They were the second Slovenian intangible element to reach the list, after the Škofja Loka Passion Play.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Ptuj on Expedia and filter by area before price.
How I’d plan carnival week
I’d turn up on Friday for the evening displays and the night show, dress up on Saturday for the corso and watch Sunday’s parade from a stretch of the route rather than the main square. Ptuj Castle holds a collection of traditional carnival masks that helps make sense of what you see on the street, and the Kurent House, near Slovenski trg, explains it all year round with interactive displays.
Where to stay in Ptuj at carnival time
Ptuj is small and full during carnival, so lock in your room the moment the dates suit you. The handiest beds are inside the old town, with the spa resort across the Drava as the alternative; I compare them in my guide to hotels in Ptuj. Visiting in a different season? The carnival features in the events in Slovenia calendar, and Ptuj is worth a visit regardless, with its castle, its wine cellar and its lake.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Ptuj and pick one that fits your day.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Ptuj on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

Kurentovanje carnival in Ptuj: questions and answers
When is Kurentovanje 2027?
The 67th edition runs from 3 to 9 February 2027, according to the official website. It opens at midnight on 2-3 February with the Kurent leap and ends on Shrove Tuesday, 9 February, with the burial of carnival at 13:00.
When is the main Kurentovanje parade?
On Sunday 7 February 2027 at 12:00. It's the international ethnographic and carnival parade, with thousands of traditional characters and masks filling the streets of Ptuj.
What is a Kurent?
Slovenia's most numerous and recognisable traditional carnival figure, belonging to the Ptuj and Drava plains, Haloze and the Slovenske Gorice. In folk belief it drives away evil and brings luck, and it's documented at least as far back as 1880.
Why is Kurentovanje on the UNESCO list?
What UNESCO inscribed, in 2017, are the Kurents' door-to-door rounds. They had entered Slovenia's own heritage register in 2012, and in 2015 the government declared them heritage of national importance.
How many Kurents take part?
The organisers say you can see up to a thousand Kurents performing their rituals. The Association of Kurent Societies brings together 25 groups with more than 1,100 members, according to Visit Ptuj.
What is the Kurent leap?
The opening ritual of Kurentovanje. At midnight between the Tuesday and Wednesday that open the festival, by firelight, the Kurents put on their bells for the first time and start ringing to drive away winter and evil. In 2027 it falls on the night of 2 to 3 February.
