    Where Sežana is

The Julian Alps, Triglav and the Soča valley lie to the north-west; Ljubljana sits in the centre; the Karst, its caves and the 47 km of coast are to the south-west, and Maribor, Ptuj and the Prekmurje plains to the east. Every number opens its guide.

Sežana is the gateway to the Karst, by the Italian border: a town of 6,173 people that works best as a base for the night. Lipica Stud Farm, Vilenica cave and the Karst Living Museum are minutes away, and Sežana itself has the Villa Mirasasso botanical garden, started in 1848, and the birthplace of the poet Srečko Kosovel.

    How I would do it

I'd sleep in Sežana to see the Karst without too much driving. Lipica in the morning, the botanical garden at midday and, between April and October, if it's a Sunday, the 3pm tour of Vilenica. Out of season the cave only takes groups.

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      A garden from 1848

The botanical garden at Villa Mirasasso was begun by the Scaramangà family of Trieste in 1848. It has 150-year-old cedars and a palm house copied from Schönbrunn's.

    2. 02 Getting there

      Lipica next door

The Lipizzaner stud farm is in the same municipality, a few kilometres from the centre.

      Lipica Stud Farm
    3. 03 My tip

      Kosovel's room keeps short hours

The birthplace of the poet Srečko Kosovel opens on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12:30pm to 4pm; on other days you need to arrange a visit.

    4. 04 To save money

      Family pass for the garden

Two adults with one or two children aged 4 to 15 get into the botanical garden for €12; with three to five children, €16.

    What I would book ahead

Sežana, a base for the Karst

The town has 6,173 residents and its municipality 13,669, spread over 217.4 km² right on the Italian border. Within it lies the stud farm at Lipica, the cradle of the Lipizzaner, and beside the village of Lokev, Vilenica cave, which has charged admission since 1633. The Škocjan Caves are also very close, just over the line in neighbouring Divača.

    The botanical garden, Sežana’s highlight

What I like most in Sežana itself is its botanical garden. The Scaramangà family of Trieste started it beside their villa in 1848 and filled it with plants from around the world until, after the Second World War, it was nationalised and opened to the public. Today it is protected as a horticultural monument and holds nearly 200 plants, including 150-year-old cedars of Lebanon, a giant sequoia, a coffee plant and a palm house modelled on the one in the Schönbrunn botanical garden. The pavilion houses a small natural history museum.

Admission is €6 for adults and €3 for children aged 4 and over. It opens daily, from 8am to 4pm in winter and until 6pm in March and October.

Lokev, Vilenica and the Venetian tower

In Lokev, besides Vilenica, there is a defensive tower the Venetians raised in 1485 against the Turks. Today it houses the Tabor Military Museum, the largest private collection of its kind in Slovenia, with pieces from both world wars and the Yugoslav army. From March to December it opens Wednesday to Sunday, 9am to 12pm and 2pm to 6pm.

Kosovel and the Karst Living Museum

Sežana is also the town of Srečko Kosovel (1904-1926), the great poet of the Karst. His birthplace has held a memorial room since 1976, redesigned in 2014, which opens on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12:30pm to 4pm. In the village of Tomaj, also in the municipality, you can visit his family’s homestead too.

To the west begins the Karst Living Museum, more than 700 hectares between Sežana, Lipica and Basovizza, over the border in Italy, with dolines, limestone pavements and caves along the old Austro-Hungarian road. In 2017 it was named the best themed trail in Slovenia.

    How to get to Sežana

By car, Sežana has its own exit on the motorway from Ljubljana to the coast. Buses are scarce, with three departures on Monday 19 October 2026 and one on Saturday 24, according to the Ljubljana bus station planner. Next door is Divača, and the whole south-west is in the coast and Karst. To the north, the municipality of Komen holds the stone village of Štanjel.
