Slovenia's mountain huts number about 179, counting huts, shelters and bivouacs run by clubs of the Alpine Association (PZS), and many of the busiest can be booked online by card, with free cancellation up to a day or two before. They serve jota, ričet or štruklji, some have no electricity or running water, and the highest is the Triglav Lodge on Kredarica.

In summer, if I'm sleeping in a Julian Alps hut, I book online as soon as I have dates, because those on the Slovenian Mountain Trail fill up. And I carry cash and a power bank, because some have no mains power.

    4. 04 Watch out

Many huts have no electricity, fridge or freezer, and some lack running water, according to Taste Slovenia. Supplies come by helicopter, horse or on someone's back.

      what to pack for Slovenia

Before you set off, check this

How to book a mountain hut in Slovenia

Several of the busiest huts, especially in the Julian Alps, the Karawanks and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, are on the PZS Bentral booking system. From each hut’s page you can book a bed, half board or other services at any hour, with the final price shown, and the booking is confirmed when you pay by card. You can cancel free of charge up to one or two days before arrival, depending on the hut, with a refund to your card, and make up to two changes. The PZS marks which huts lie on the Slovenian Mountain Trail, the Slovenska planinska pot. gov.uk advises checking whether a hut is open before setting off.

    What’s on the menu

Taste Slovenia has a whole page on hut cooking. As well as spoon stews such as jota, made with sauerkraut or sour turnip, and ričet, with barley, many keepers make štruklji, strudel, scrambled pancakes or game, and many bake their own bread. Near the pastures there’s sour milk and žganci. It singles out award winners such as Dom na Kofcah, best hut of 2019 for its štruklji, Valvasorjev dom pod Stolom, of 2016 and 2018, and Roblekov dom na Begunjščici, of 2017, whose supplies arrive by horse-drawn cart. The most typical sweet dish is covered in štruklji.

No power, no fridge, life up there

Cooking in a hut is an art, says Taste Slovenia, because many have no electricity, fridge or freezer, some lack running water and others cook on wood-fired stoves. Food sometimes arrives by helicopter, on horseback, by cable car or on mountaineers’ backs. That’s why it’s worth carrying cash, a power bank and warm clothes; my full list is in what to pack for Slovenia.

    Kredarica and other well-known huts

The Triglav Lodge on Kredarica is, according to the Tourist Board, the highest hut in the country and the most visited in the Triglav range, a symbol of Slovenian identity since 1896 as the first Slovenian hut below Triglav. It’s open all year and, despite the altitude, has washrooms and electricity. The Tourist Board also mentions the Czech Hut above Jezersko, one of the oldest, the Orožen Hut above Bohinj, built on the foundations of the society’s first hut, and the Ruše Hut on Pohorje. The Triglav area is covered in Triglav National Park, and the routes between huts in hiking in Slovenia. gov.uk also points out that Slovenia has bears and mentions an attack in 2025; what to know is in bears in Slovenia.
