Piran's old town on its peninsula in the Adriatic, with red roofs, the bell tower and olive trees in the foreground

Slovenia in July means heat and high season. It's the warmest month, averaging 21.9°C in Ljubljana and 23.6°C at Portorož, which also has its driest month (51 mm). It's time for the coast, rafting on the Soča and festivals in Ljubljana and Bled, and for queues too, which is why a free shuttle links Radovljica and Bled from July.

    When I would go

In July I'd turn the day on its head. Lakes and viewpoints first thing, ahead of the coaches; the coast or the river in the afternoon, when the heat peaks and the water is welcome.

    Before you go

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 To save money

To Bled without a car, for free

The Tourist Board says a free shuttle runs between Radovljica and Bled in July and August. Sleeping in Radovljica, 8 km away, and riding it in is my summer trick.

      Lights on the Lake

In summer Bled holds Lights on the Lake, with more than 10,000 candles in eggshells floating on the water, according to the Tourist Board. The date is set each year locally.

      Vršič in high season

In May 2026 the Tourist Board announced a new regime on the pass, with 90 paid spaces, barriers and shuttles from Kranjska Gora and Bovec. In July, I'd take the shuttle.

    July weather

July is the year’s peak, averaging 21.9°C in both Ljubljana and Maribor according to SURS, 19.7°C at Postojna and 23.6°C at Portorož, the highest monthly average in the country. Portorož also has its driest month in July, with 51 mm. Higher up it’s another story, as Rateče stays at 17.5°C and Kredarica at 7.4°C, with 227 mm of rain. In the mountains afternoon storms are the risk, and the FCDO warns of violent storms and flash floods. Every month, side by side, is in Slovenia weather.

The coast in July, at its best

For the sea, July is the month. The Tourist Board says most of Portorož’s bathing areas and its marina fly the Blue Flag every year, and that Ankaran runs a free bus to its beaches in summer. Piran, with Tartini Square and its cathedral above the old town, is best enjoyed late in the afternoon as the sun drops. Bathing spots one by one are in Slovenia’s beaches.

The Soča and the lakes in July, early

More than 60 guided sports agencies work in the Soča Valley, according to the Tourist Board, and July is peak season for rafting and kayaking. At the lakes, timing is everything. Bled, with its castle open 8am to 8pm, Bohinj and Jasna are different places at eight in the morning, and to link the first two early, see Bled to Bohinj. To reach Bled without a car, the Tourist Board mentions a free shuttle from Radovljica, 8 km away, in July and August, and on Vršič, the regime of 90 paid spaces and shuttles from Kranjska Gora and Bovec announced in May 2026. The valley’s star activity is in Soča rafting.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Piran before prices climb.

    July festivals and long evenings

July is the heart of the cultural summer. The Tourist Board places the Ljubljana Festival, the Jazz Festival, Ana Desetnica street theatre, open-air cinema at the castle and the Nights in Old Ljubljana in summer. At Bled, Lights on the Lake fills the water with more than 10,000 candles in eggshells, and at Predjama the Erazem knights’ tournament takes place every summer. The 2027 dates weren’t published when I wrote this, so check them in spring.

    How I’d plan July

A week split between two bases, four nights in the Alps, at Radovljica or Bohinj, and three on the coast. Early starts for the lakes, the river booked in advance and afternoons for the water. If crowds put you off, August won’t help, as I explain in Slovenia in August. All three hot months, compared, are in Slovenia in summer.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Piran and choose by the reviews.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Piran before prices climb.
