One day in Liechtenstein, Vaduz from end to end

The Office of Statistics says most people visiting Liechtenstein come and go within the day. That’s fair enough as long as the day is well planned, because Vaduz is small but its opening hours are unforgiving. This is the one I’d do from Zurich, built for a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, with everything on foot from the bus stop.

Why I run it in this order

The day turns on two fixed times. The Städtle museums open at 10:00, and the guided tasting at the Hofkellerei, the Prince’s winery, starts at 15:00. Everything else slots in between. That’s why I leave Zurich at 8:00, which with the train to Sargans and the bus gets me into Vaduz before the Kunstmuseum opens.

I start with the art because it takes the longest. The Kunstmuseum and Hilti Art Foundation have a joint ticket desk, and I’d give them an hour and a half. Then, at number 37 on the Städtle, the Treasure Chamber and the Postage Stamp Museum go quickly. The first has Fabergé eggs and moon rock, and the second holds every stamp the country has issued since 1912, free of charge.

I put lunch near the Liechtenstein Center because that’s where you get the souvenir stamp in your passport. After the Kunstraum Engländerbau, which doesn’t open until 13:00, I head up to the old quarter, the Mitteldorf in Vaduz, on the way to the winery. That way I reach the tasting without rushing or doubling back.

Which day of the week works best?

This is the classic mistake. On Mondays the Kunstmuseum, the Hilti Art Foundation and the LandesMuseum close, which leaves a Monday trip looking thin. On Sundays there’s no public tasting at the Hofkellerei, which only runs it Monday to Saturday. And on Saturdays the tasting is at 14:00, so lunch has to move earlier.

Wednesday is the day I’d choose on a tight budget, because the Kunstmuseum is free and the LandesMuseum stays open until 20:00. Thursday is the other strong option, with the Kunstmuseum also open until 20:00, and on that day I’d even flip the order and leave the art until last.

What I leave out on purpose

This day doesn’t go up into the mountains, and I’ll be upfront about that because for me they’re the best of Liechtenstein. Malbun is 30 minutes from Vaduz on bus 21, but squeezing it into the same day forces a choice between the museums and the tasting. I don’t go inside the castle either, because you can’t. It’s the Prince’s residence, and the Princely House says visits only happen on special occasions. The view from the Städtle and the government quarter is plenty on a short day. Gutenberg Castle in Balzers does open, but by appointment and only from May to October, so I don’t count it for an improvised trip.

What the day costs

Paying as you go, the Kunstmuseum is CHF 15, the LandesMuseum and Treasure Chamber combined CHF 13, the stamp CHF 3 and the guided tasting CHF 19. Add a bus day pass at CHF 5 to 9 depending on zones, plus the train from Zurich to Sargans, which is separate.

The one-day ALL INCLUSIVE Erlebnispass costs CHF 25 and covers the bus, both museums, the stamp museum, the passport stamp and a two-wine tasting at the Hofkellerei. Arriving from Austria or by car

From Feldkirch, bus 11 runs straight to Vaduz, Post in 45 minutes, and from Buchs it’s 18 minutes with a change at Schaan. I wouldn’t build the regional train that crosses the country into this plan without first checking the Austrian railways’ timetable, because its autumn 2026 service isn’t clear to me.

By car, the first hour of parking in central Vaduz is free and after that it’s CHF 1.50 an hour, with a three-hour limit at the central car parks.
