Things to do in Liechtenstein in winter, up high and down below

Liechtenstein in winter doesn’t compete with the big Alpine resorts, and to my mind that’s its charm. This is winter on a human scale, with a ski area where nobody queues, a cross-country loop you light up yourself and a capital that fills with lights without feeling crowded. Here’s what I’d do, up high and down below.

Up top, Malbun’s snow

Malbun opens its 2026-2027 season on 19 December and closes on 4 April. It has 23 km of runs, four lifts up to about 2,000 metres and snowmaking on the main slopes since 2006. A day costs CHF 55 for an adult, and children born in 2020 or later go free. Its trump card is the free children’s area, with a carousel, a magic carpet and a little tow for beginners. Cross-country at Steg, the one I wouldn’t miss

A few minutes down the road, at Steg, is the only place in the country with groomed cross-country trails, between 1,310 and 1,450 metres. The big loop is 12.2 km for classic and skating, and a day costs CHF 10, free for under-16s. What I really love is the night loop, 3.2 km lit every day from 17:00 to 21:30, switched on with a button beside the car park. The trails are groomed from December to mid-March, depending on snowfall.

Sledges, skates and ice

Sledging is the family favourite. At Steg a groomed kilometre-long run comes down from the Sücka guesthouse, a quarter of an hour’s walk up, and it’s floodlit from 17:00 to 22:00. Malbun has another kilometre from Turna into the village and a 200-metre children’s run in front of the chapel, both free. And once the skiing’s done, in the quarter of an hour from four o’clock, the Täli and Sareis chairs take sledges up so you can ride down the emptied pistes.

For skating, the rink at the Schlucher-Treff in Malbun opens every day of the season from 9:00 to 20:00, lit after dark, for CHF 7. Thursday evenings are for ice hockey. If you ice-climb, the Eisturm run by the Liechtenstein Alpine Club turns into three frozen walls in winter, for CHF 10 a session with your own kit.

What’s on in Vaduz when it snows up top?

Down below, winter feels different. The Rathausplatz hosts Vaduz on Ice, an ice rink with food stalls and a wooden hut, which the Vaduz traders’ association says runs from 6 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. Over the same weeks the Städtle lights up, and the town-centre museums stay open all winter, with just a few closed days around Christmas and New Year. I go into it in Christmas in Liechtenstein.

More snowy plans

There’s more. The Lama- und Alpakahof in Triesenberg runs winter treks with llamas and alpacas, by torchlight or head torch, and even with fondue. The Malbun Center puts you in touch with snowshoe guides, because it advises against going alone. And in Malbun, K-BUM puts on children’s theatre through the winter months. My plan for three winter days

With three days between December and March, I’d spend two nights in Malbun. Day one, skiing from 11:00 on the cheaper late ticket and sledging at the end of the afternoon. Day two, cross-country at Steg, lunch at the Sücka guesthouse if it’s open, and a floodlit sledge run down. On day three I’d drop down to Vaduz, leave the bags, go into the Kunstmuseum and finish skating on the Rathausplatz if Vaduz on Ice is on. It’s a winter without rushing and with very little driving.

The cold and getting around

The Office of Statistics describes a climate that’s mild for the Alps, thanks to the föhn, and says the thermometer rarely drops below −10 °C in winter.
