When to visit Liechtenstein, month by month and by what you're after

When someone asks me the best time to visit Liechtenstein, I answer with another question, what are you coming to do? The country has two very distinct seasons, mountain summer and ski winter, plus a valley you can visit any time of year. Picking the right dates comes down to which of those three you care about.

If you’re coming to walk

The mountains call the shots from June to October. The Sareis chairlift, which climbs from Malbun to about 2,000 m, has a 2026 summer season that starts in mid-June (the 13th) and finishes in mid-October (the 18th), and it’s the gateway to many high routes. The lift company’s website shows its live status, so I’d check the chairlift is actually turning before heading up.

June strikes me as a lovely month for the meadows and long evenings. July and August are the sunniest months but also the wettest, averaging 134 and 148 mm in Vaduz, so start early and come down before the afternoon clouds build. On the highest routes, the tourist board warns that snow can hang around until late spring.

If you’re coming to ski

In Malbun, the lifts turn from the Saturday before Christmas, 19 December 2026, until Sunday 4 April 2027, and cross-country skiing at Steg runs from December to mid-March. The official figures show this is the mountains’ big season. In 2025 the Alpine hotels filled 64.2% of their beds in February and 50.8% in January, against 7.8% in November, and in February the average stay in those hotels was 4.5 nights. When is it quietest?

The Amt für Statistik figures are crystal clear. In 2025 August had the most overnight stays, 29,896, followed by July and September, and hotel bed occupancy hit 52.2% in August. At the other end, November had 11,610 overnight stays and 25.3% occupancy, the low point of the year.

There’s an important caveat, and it matters more here than in most places. The statistics office itself notes that most visitors are day-trippers, who don’t sleep in the country and don’t appear in those figures. In practice, the Städtle in Vaduz can feel busy at lunchtime even when the hotels are half empty.

My ideal calendar

Unless you’re skiing, I’d go in September. The Vaduz average is 15.1°C, it rains a good deal less than in August, the mountains are still open and the summer peak has passed. Autumn also brings the alpine cattle drive, with its cow beauty contests, and in October the Vaduz and Eschen fairs.

My second choice would be June and my third December, for the Advent atmosphere in Vaduz and the ice rink on the Rathausplatz. April, May and October are quiet, pleasant months in the valley, with fairs in Schaan and Balzers in May, but up high you may find the chairlift idle and snow on the tops, so I’d treat them as town-and-vineyard breaks rather than walking trips.

For a pre-Christmas break from the UK, the Vaduz ice rink opens on 6 November 2026 and stays up until after Twelfth Night, 10 January 2027, and the Städtle is dressed for Christmas from 27 November, so those weeks work well even if you don’t ski. November itself I’d leave to museum lovers in no hurry at all, with no skiing, no chairlift and some of the fewest sunshine hours of the year.

Dates worth marking

Some days change a visit completely. 15 August is the national day, when the whole of central Vaduz turns into a festival and the Städtle museums let you in free from 10:00 to 20:00, but it’s also the busiest day of the year in the capital. If you’re coming for it, book your bed months ahead and plan on buses rather than the car, as parking near the centre is very limited that day. On Mondays the Kunstmuseum and the LandesMuseum close, so if you only have one day in the capital, avoid a Monday. And February brings carnival and the Funken bonfires.
