Hotels in Vaduz, from the hillside retreat to the late-night key card

Vaduz isn’t a hotel town. The Office of Statistics puts the average number open in summer 2025 at five, and the whole year produced 39,461 hotel nights. That tells you two things. The choice fits on one hand, and when a conference is on or August arrives, rooms go quickly. I’ve only included hotels with an up-to-date website that I’ve read through, because in a country this small an old listing for a place that’s shut can wreck a weekend.

The Sonnenhof, for a proper treat

The Park Hotel Sonnenhof is my pick if price isn’t the question. It’s a four-star superior at Mareestrasse 29, on the slope above the capital, with 29 non-smoking rooms and gardens by Enzo Enea. The Real family have run it for around 60 years. The rate covers breakfast, the indoor pool, the sauna and an all-zones LIEmobil bus ticket, valid from the day you arrive at Sargans, Buchs or Feldkirch. Dogs are welcome at CHF 50 a day.

The other reason to stay is dinner without going out. Its restaurant, the Marée, holds 16 Gault Millau points and is listed in the MICHELIN Guide; I set it against the competition in restaurants in Vaduz. One warning, the hotel closes from 22 December 2026 to 10 January 2027.

Residence and Löwen, four stars in town

The Residence is at Städtle 23, right on the pedestrian street with the castle overhead. Since 2019 it has added 17 rooms and suites in the Central annexe next door, so the range runs from single rooms to an 80 m² suite. I like that it has underground parking with its own access, gold dust in central Vaduz, and that its restaurant, chef Martin Weber’s Chapter Two, has made it into the MICHELIN Guide. The Hotel-Gasthof Löwen is the one with history. It sits at Herrengasse 35, just north of the centre, in a house claiming more than 600 years, and it’s one of the few that publishes prices. A standard double is CHF 315 and a De Luxe with a castle view CHF 365, breakfast included and the CHF 3.50 tourist tax on top. Two things to know first. There’s no lift, and the restaurant only opens Monday to Friday, so on Saturday you eat elsewhere. The Städtle in Vaduz is a few minutes away for that.

Vaduzerhof and Giessen, no front desk

The other two take the opposite approach. The Vaduzerhof by b_smart, at Städtle 3, has 35 rooms of 18 to 28 m², check-in at a kiosk and help by phone. What I like is how frank its website is, no concierge, no restaurant, no permanent reception, and a fairer price in return. There’s a Finnish sauna in the vaulted cellar, welcome on a winter evening.

The Giessen Hotel & Coffeehouse is at Zollstrasse 16 by the motorway exit, with 24-hour self check-in and a café open from 6:30 on weekdays. It pitches itself at cyclists, and the Au and Spital bus stops are two minutes away. Not for anyone wanting a stroll into town after dinner, but it works if you arrive by bike or car.

Cars, buses and the hill

Before choosing, think about how you’ll get around. The Sonnenhof is up the slope, and although the bus is included, walking back from dinner on the Städtle is uphill all the way. The Residence has its own garage, which matters, because the public car parks in the centre are free for the first hour and CHF 1.50 an hour after that, payment is up front in cash or by app, and central spaces are limited to three hours. Arriving by bus from Sargans, everything central is a short walk from the Vaduz, Post stop.

Which would I choose for which trip?

For a couple’s break with a good dinner, the Sonnenhof. For a weekend of museums on foot, the Residence or the Vaduzerhof. For a building with centuries behind it and a clear price, the Löwen. For cyclists or anyone passing through, the Giessen. If you’re here for the mountains, don’t sleep in Vaduz at all; the options up there are in hotels in Malbun.
