- Ideal length
- 7 to 10 days
- Passport
- Under 10 years old, 3 months spare
Planning an independent trip to Slovenia: a valid passport, a GHIC and proper travel insurance. With 7 to 10 days you can see Ljubljana, Bled, Bohinj, the Soča Valley, the Karst and Piran from two or three bases. By car, a weekly vignette costs €16 from the DARS shop; without one, buses reach almost every village. June and September are the best months.
My rule for Slovenia is fewer bases and more nights in each. The country is so compact that from Ljubljana, Bled and Piran you reach nearly everything on a day out, and you don't lose your mornings packing.

Full read: 3 min
- A passport under ten years old, a GHIC and travel insurance cover the paperwork.
- Seven days is enough for Ljubljana, the Julian Alps, the Karst and the coast.
- Two or three bases, Ljubljana, Bled or Bohinj, and Piran, cover almost everything.
- The weekly car vignette costs €16 and is compulsory on motorways and expressways.

01 My tip
Start in the capital, not at Bled
Ljubljana is 50 km from Bled according to the Slovenian Tourist Board and it is the hub of the national coach network. Whether you land at Brnik or arrive by coach from Venice or Zagreb, starting there keeps everything within reach.

What actually eats into the budget
More than food or beds, it's the big-ticket sights. Postojna's park packages run from €34.90 to €84.50 and Bled Castle costs €19 for an adult, according to their official websites.

03 Getting there
Car for the Alps, coach for the classics
Bled, Postojna, Predjama, Velika Planina and Piran are easy day trips by coach from Ljubljana, says the Tourist Board. For the Vršič Pass and the Soča Valley I'd hire a car.

Postojna tickets from its own website only
The company that runs Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle warns about unofficial resellers and sells tickets only on its website. Buy there, not through a search-engine advert.

What I would book for Slovenia
- Places to stayBooking.com A base in Ljubljana Coaches to Bled, Postojna, Piran and most of the country leave from the capital.
- Places to stayBooking.com A second base at Bled Sleep by the lake and head off early for Bohinj, Vintgar or the Vršič Pass.
- Tours and ticketsGetYourGuide Day trip to Bled from Ljubljana If you're not driving and short on days, it sorts out the transport and the boat to the island.
How many days, and in what order?
Three days gets you Ljubljana, Bled and Postojna Cave, and not much else. A week is when the trip starts to make sense. My order would be Ljubljana, then the Julian Alps (Bled, Bohinj and, in summer, the Vršič Pass down into the Soča Valley), then the Karst with Postojna or Škocjan, finishing on the coast at Piran. With ten days I’d add the east, Maribor and Ptuj, which tend to be left out of first trips and which I find the perfect counterpoint. The day-by-day route is in Slovenia in a week.
The best bases
Ljubljana is the obvious base for the first few nights, for the buses and because the centre is walkable. For the Alps, Bled is the most convenient and Bohinj the quietest, both in or right next to Triglav National Park. On the coast I’d pick Piran, which also leaves the Karst within easy reach for a morning. If you head east, Maribor. How to choose each area is in hotels in Slovenia.
Car or coach?
There’s no single answer here. The Tourist Board explains that intercity buses reach almost every village and names Bled, Postojna, Predjama, Velika Planina and Piran as easy coach trips. With that and three bases you can do a complete trip without driving at all.
I want a car for the Alps, though. The Vršič road and the Soča Valley are best enjoyed stopping every few kilometres, and you can’t do that on a bus. Remember that you drive on the right. If you hire, you’ll need DARS’s electronic vignette, €16 for a week or €32 for a month for a car, linked to the number plate and bought at evinjeta.dars.si. From 15 November to 15 March winter equipment is compulsory. I compare the options in getting around Slovenia.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Ljubljana on Expedia and filter by area before price.
When to go
On the official 2001 to 2010 averages, Ljubljana sits around 22°C in July and just above freezing in January, while up at the Kredarica station on the Triglav massif the annual average is below freezing. The country you find in January has little to do with the one in July. I’d go in June or September if I wanted lakes, mountains and coast on the same trip, and in winter if the plan is skiing. Which months suit which plan, from lakes to skiing, is set out in the best time to visit Slovenia. Sockets are the European two-pin type, so pack an adaptor from home; more in plugs in Slovenia.
How much money to bring
Slovenia has used the euro since 2007 and the Tourist Board talks about an exceptionally high number of cash machines. What weighs most on the budget, more than food, is the entry fees for the headline sights. Bled Castle costs €19 for an adult, Ljubljana Castle €19 with the funicular at the desk, Lipica from €25, and Postojna’s packages run from €34.90 to €84.50. I’d choose carefully, because you don’t need to pay for every Karst cave to understand the landscape. My breakdown is in is Slovenia expensive.

The paperwork, in five minutes
Slovenia sits inside Schengen, so the checks are the ones you’d face in France or Spain. Two passport dates matter to the FCDO, an issue date within the last ten years and an expiry at least three months after you leave the zone, and tourists get 90 days per 180 visa-free. On top of that, the EU’s biometric Entry/Exit System has applied at Slovenia’s airports and ports since April 2026, which can slow the queue on arrival. The Tourist Board also mentions temporary checks at some internal borders, so carry your passport if you pop over to Trieste or Croatia for the day.
Health-wise, a GHIC or EHIC covers treatment that becomes medically necessary in the public system, the FCDO says, but it won’t replace a proper travel policy. I wouldn’t go hiking in the Julian Alps without a policy that covers mountain rescue. If you’re in a private flat rather than a hotel, ask your host about police registration, which has to happen within three days.

Slovenia travel guide: questions and answers
Is Slovenia worth visiting?
I think so, especially if you like mountains. Within 20,271 km² you get the country's only national park, Škocjan Caves, a World Heritage Site since 1986, and the Venetian-style coast at Piran, with short drives between them.
How many days do you need in Slovenia?
I'd say seven at least to see the Julian Alps, the Karst and the coast without rushing. Three days covers Ljubljana, Bled and Postojna, and ten lets you add the east of the country.
What do British travellers need to enter Slovenia?
A passport issued less than ten years ago and valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area, according to the FCDO. You can stay up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa.
Is Slovenia expensive to travel?
The big sights are what you'll notice, such as €19 for Bled Castle or Postojna packages from €34.90. If you hire a car, add the vignette, €16 for a week.
When is the best time to visit Slovenia?
June and September, in my view. July and August crowd Bled and the coast, and in winter the Vršič Pass and the high mountains are a different proposition, although it's a good time for skiing.
Do you need a car to travel around Slovenia?
Not for the classics, because the Tourist Board lists easy coach trips to Bled, Postojna, Predjama, Velika Planina and Piran. For the Soča Valley, Vršič or the Karst villages, a car saves a lot of time.
