Slovenia in April: the quick answer

    Full read: 2 min

    • Vintgar Gorge reopens, with its season running to October.
    • Bled Castle opens 8am to 8pm from April.
    • An 11.3°C average in Ljubljana and 12.6°C at Portorož.

    When I would go

April is my dark-horse month for Slovenia: Bled on summer hours and Vintgar freshly reopened, without July's crowds, and the Karst and coast at their best. I'd bring a waterproof and not count on the high mountains.

    Before you go

Before you go to Slovenia, this

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      Vintgar, newly reopened

The gorge opens from April to October, with a 5.7 km circuit and 1.6 km of boardwalks above the Radovna. Its website warns that hours change with the season and the weather, and asks for a digital pass with a time slot.

    2. 02 My tip

Bled, two more hours of castle

From April, Bled Castle opens 8am to 8pm every day, against 6pm in winter. An adult ticket is €19 and a child's €7.

    3. 03 Getting there

      The 27th, a national holiday

The Day of Uprising Against Occupation is a national work-free day, according to the government. If it falls next to a weekend, expect busier spots around Ljubljana.

    My checklist before setting off

Vintgar and Bled on summer hours

The first thing to change in April is Vintgar Gorge, which opens its season from April to October. It’s 1.6 km of boardwalks between sheer walls above the River Radovna, part of a 5.7 km circuit. You need to book an entry time with the digital pass, and as opening varies with the season and the weather, I’d check the evening before. At Bled, the castle moves to its long hours, 8am to 8pm every day, with adult tickets still €19. To plan the gorge, see Vintgar Gorge.

    April weather

Official statistics for 2001 to 2010 give an 11.3°C average in Ljubljana and Maribor and 12.6°C at Portorož. It does rain, with 105 mm in the capital, 118 mm at Postojna and 116 mm at Rateče. For me that’s no problem if the plan is caves, towns and stone villages, since Postojna and Škocjan are visited rain or shine, and the Karst, with Štanjel and Lipica, is lovely in spring. From Postojna, Lake Cerknica is an easy addition, an intermittent lake the Tourist Board ranks among Europe’s largest, with more than 270 bird species. The whole year’s table is in Slovenia weather.

    What about the high mountains?

The high mountains are still in winter in April. At Kredarica, in the Triglav massif, the month averages -3.2°C and only climbs above zero in May. I wouldn’t plan high-level routes in April without snow experience. The valleys, on the other hand, are lovely, with Rateče averaging 6.3°C, and you can walk round the lakes at Bled and Bohinj without any trouble.

    Holidays and Easter

27 April is the Day of Uprising Against Occupation, a national work-free day according to the Government of Slovenia. Easter brings two more work-free days, Sunday and Monday, but I won’t give you the 2027 date because it isn’t on the official calendar I checked. If you coincide with a long weekend, expect more people at spots near Ljubljana. The full list is in Slovenian public holidays.

    What I’d do in April

A week based in Ljubljana and Bled, with a day of caves in the Karst and another on the coast. In July that trip would cost more and come with queues; in April you can take it slowly. If you’d rather wait for warmer weather, May’s averages are five degrees higher, as I explain in Slovenia in May. March, April and May side by side are in Slovenia in spring.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Bled and pick one that fits your day.
