Lake Bohinj from the top of Vogel, stretched out between wooded slopes and rock walls, with the Julian Alps peaks behind

    Landscape ranking

Slovenia's most beautiful landscapes, my way

    Facts checked on

Slovenia's most beautiful places are, for me, landscapes rather than monuments: Lake Bled from the Ojstrica viewpoint, Lake Bohinj from Vogel, the Logar Valley with the 90-metre Rinka waterfall, the green water of Zelenci, the Strunjan cliff above the Adriatic and the vineyard hills of Brda and Jeruzalem. Nearly all of them look best from above, early or late in the day.

    My view
    Sergio Lepone

Slovenian scenery looks best from above. Before paying for another ticket, I'd climb to a viewpoint: Ojstrica above Bled or the Vogel cable car above Bohinj gives you the shot the shore never will, ideally in early or late light.

Most beautiful places in Slovenia: the quick answer

    Full read: 2 min

    • My top two are Lake Bled from Ojstrica and Lake Bohinj from Vogel.
    • The Logar Valley and the Triglav Lakes are my favourite high-mountain landscapes.
    • On the coast, the Strunjan cliff; in the east, the Jeruzalem hills.

    My checklist before setting off

    What I would book ahead

    My ranking, scored

    Slovenia's 12 most beautiful landscapes

My score out of 10, purely for the beauty of the landscape and how it photographs, not for history or convenience. Facts about each place come from the Slovenian Tourist Board and UNESCO.

    1. Lake Bled from Ojstrica

The island, the church and the castle in a single frame. The viewpoint is 20 to 30 minutes' walk from Velika Zaka.

      9.7 out of 10

    2. Lake Bohinj from Vogel

The country's largest natural lake, glacial, seen from the cable car with Triglav opposite. From up there the whole valley makes sense.

      9.5 out of 10

    3. Logar Valley and the Rinka waterfall

A glacial valley the Tourist Board ranks among the most beautiful in Europe, walled in by the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and closed by the 90-metre Rinka waterfall.

      9.3 out of 10

    4. The Triglav Lakes Valley

Seven permanent lakes and a few seasonal ones high in the national park. You can only get there on foot, which is part of the appeal.

      9.2 out of 10

    5. The Soča and its great gorge

Emerald water running through pools and gorges. From the suspension bridges near the source the colour is even more intense.

      9.1 out of 10

    6. Zelenci

A nature reserve near Podkoren with a blue-green lake fed by springs. It's small and takes only a short walk.

      8.9 out of 10

    7. The Strunjan cliff

The highest cliff on the eastern Adriatic, made of flysch, above Moon Bay. For me it's the finest landscape on the Slovenian coast.

      8.7 out of 10

    8. Velika Planina

Herdsmen's huts on a high plateau above Kamnik. With low cloud in the valley it feels like another world.

      8.6 out of 10

    9. Piran from the walls

The old-town roofs, Tartini Square and sea on both sides of the peninsula. St George's church gives the best angle.

      8.5 out of 10

    10. Savica waterfall

A 78-metre drop in two streams, fed by two underground lakes, in the Bohinj valley.

      8.3 out of 10

    11. The Brda hills

Vines, hilltop villages and the Alps behind. From the 23-metre Gonjače lookout tower you can take in the whole district.

      8.1 out of 10

    12. The Jeruzalem hills

A hamlet of 46 people surrounded by vineyard hills in the east of the country, inside a landscape park. Different light, different scenery.

      7.9 out of 10

What the official sites leave out

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      The Bled postcard, from Ojstrica

The Tourist Board puts the Ojstrica and Mala Osojnica viewpoints 20 to 30 minutes on foot from Velika Zaka. From there the island lines up with the castle behind it.

      Ojstrica viewpoint
    2. 02 Worth the splurge

      The Vogel cable car

It rises from Bohinj with views of Triglav, according to the Tourist Board. It's the easiest way to see the whole of Lake Bohinj and the peaks around it.

      Vogel
    3. 03 My tip

      Logar Valley is best midweek

It sits at the far end of the upper Savinja valley, a long way from anywhere. I'd go on a weekday and walk up to the 90-metre Rinka waterfall at the head of the valley.

      Logar Valley

Bled and Bohinj from the viewpoints

The first lesson of Slovenian scenery is that height pays. Lake Bled is lovely from the shore, but from the Ojstrica viewpoint, 20 to 30 minutes on foot from Velika Zaka, the island and the castle fit in the same frame, and that’s where the postcard makes sense. Bohinj works the same way from the Vogel cable car, which the Tourist Board describes as having views of Triglav. To me, Lake Bohinj seen from above is the most complete landscape in the country, with the water, the valley and the peaks all at once. The ranking by sights and visits is in things to do in Slovenia.

Zelenci, the Soča and that coloured water

The second big theme is water. The Soča runs between pools and gorges in an emerald colour that looks retouched. Zelenci, near Podkoren, is a nature reserve with a blue-green lake fed by springs, and it’s a short walk, so it works even when you’re in a hurry. Higher up, the Triglav Lakes Valley holds seven permanent lakes and a few seasonal ones. You won’t see that from the car; it takes a proper mountain hike, and it’s the one I’d most like to have etched in my memory.

The Logar Valley and other rock-walled valleys

The Logar Valley is my favourite. It sits at the head of the upper Savinja valley, ringed by the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, and for the Tourist Board few Alpine valleys in Europe can match it. The 90-metre Rinka waterfall waits at the end. Way over to the west, in the Bohinj valley, the Savica waterfall drops 78 metres in two streams. If waterfalls are your thing, Slovenia’s waterfalls has them all. Villages have their own ranking in the prettiest villages in Slovenia, and views from above are in the best viewpoints in Slovenia.

Strunjan and Piran, the prettiest coast

The Slovenian coast is short, 47 km according to the government, but the scenery is surprising for such a small stretch. The flysch cliff at Strunjan drops into Moon Bay, and according to the Tourist Board nothing on the eastern Adriatic stands taller. Close by, Piran is best seen from the high points of the old town, with the rooftops, Tartini Square and the sea on both sides. I’d do both on the same day.

Brda and Jeruzalem, the vineyard hills

The last kind of landscape I love is vineyard country. Brda, in Goriška, is all ridges with perched villages and the Alps behind, and from the 23-metre Gonjače lookout tower you can see the whole district. At the other end of the country, Jeruzalem is a hamlet of 46 people surrounded by vineyard hills, inside a landscape park in Pomurje. These are softer scenes with a different light, and they’re how I’d end a trip that started in the high mountains. The wines of each area are in Slovenian wine.

    0/3 Pick before you peek.

    1. Lake Bohinj is Slovenia's largest natural lake.

      See the answer

True. The Tourist Board describes it as the country's largest natural lake. Lake Cerknica is bigger, but it is intermittent.

    2. The Rinka waterfall in the Logar Valley is 90 metres high.

      See the answer

True. That's the figure the Tourist Board gives, at the head of the valley in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.

    3. The Strunjan cliff is made of granite.

      See the answer

False. It's flysch, layered sedimentary rock, and the Tourist Board calls it the highest cliff on the eastern Adriatic.

Most beautiful places in Slovenia: questions and answers

What is the most beautiful place in Slovenia?

For me, Lake Bled seen from the Ojstrica viewpoint, with the island and the castle in the same frame. Lake Bohinj from Vogel comes a very close second.

Which Slovenian landscapes can you see without much walking?

Lake Bohinj from the Vogel cable car, Zelenci, which is a short stroll, Piran, and the Brda hills by car. Ojstrica needs a 20 to 30 minute climb.

What is the most beautiful valley in Slovenia?

I'd pick the Logar Valley, which the Tourist Board describes as one of the most beautiful Alpine valleys in Europe. The Soča Valley is the alternative if you prefer water to rock walls.

    Is the Slovenian coast scenic?

Yes, even though it's only 47 km long. The Strunjan cliff, the highest on the eastern Adriatic according to the Tourist Board, and Piran seen from above are the highlights.

When is the best light for photographing the lakes?

First thing in the morning, before the coach groups arrive, and at sunset. In winter, if Lake Bled freezes, the Tourist Board says people skate on it, and the scene changes completely.
