Montenegro's calendar
Montenegro's events and festivals through the year
Montenegro's calendar is concentrated on the coast and in summer. The big moments are Kotor's carnival in February, Budva's between April and May, Independence Day on 21 May, Statehood Day on 13 July, Kotor's Boka Night and Sea Dance in Bečići in August, and an open-air New Year's Eve in Tivat. Most 2027 dates haven't been published yet.

- Montenegro's events are concentrated on the coast and in summer.
- Kotor's carnival ran from 6 to 15 February 2026; Budva's from 30 April to 3 May.
- Sea Dance took place on Bečići beach from 28 to 30 August 2026.
- The state holidays are 21 May and 13 July, two days each.
If you can choose, I'd go to Kotor in February for the carnival, when there are no cruise ships, or at the end of August for Boka Night and Sea Dance. Before locking in 2027 dates, check each tourist board's site, as hardly any have published them.

What I would book
Montenegro doesn’t have one huge national festival that brings the whole country to a standstill. Instead it has a calendar spread across its towns and concentrated on the coast. I see that as a plus, as you can fit an event into almost any summer trip. The downside is that next year’s dates come out late, so this guide gives the 2026 dates with their sources and flags where 2027 is still unknown.
Winter, the carnivals
The year starts in Kotor. The Kotor tourist board set its 2026 winter carnival for 6 to 15 February, preceded by the Kotor Winter Fest from 29 November 2025 to 31 January 2026; I cover it in Kotor carnival. In Herceg Novi, the Mimosa festival, held since 1969, is one of the events the local tourist board makes most of, though I couldn’t find its 2027 dates.
Spring, Budva and the bay
Budva’s international carnival ran between 30 April and 3 May 2026, and the town kicked off the season on 9 May with a free concert by Artbat. On the bay, Perast keeps two fixed-date celebrations, the Perast maypole on 1 May and the votive day of Our Lady of Perast on the 15th. 21 May is Independence Day, a two-day state holiday.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Budva on Expedia and filter by area before price.
Summer, the big season
On 13 July, Statehood Day, Budva puts on free concerts. Bar holds the Bar Chronicle through the summer, with theatre, exhibitions, readings and concerts, and Ulcinj stages its Summer Stage in the old town. The Bar tourist board also lists local food and music nights in Šušanj, Sutomore and Dobra Voda in August and in Utjeha and Čanj through July and August, the kind of small village fiesta I’d happily plan an evening around. August is the big month. In Kotor, Boka Night fills the bay with illuminated boats; in Petrovac, Petrovačka noć fell on 21 August 2026; and from 28 to 30 August the Sea Dance Festival returned to Bečići beach, free with advance registration.
Autumn and winter
In September 2026 Budva laid on a free Black Coffee concert in Painters’ Square on the 21st. The next event with an official date is Dan širuna, the scad festival, on Saturday 17 October 2026 in front of Budva Old Town. Bar marks its Liberation Day on 24 November, and the year ends in Tivat, which the national tourist board recommends for an open-air New Year’s Eve from 31 December 2026 to 2 January 2027.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Budva and pick one that fits your day.
Official holidays
The holidays law sets 21 May and 13 July as state holidays and 1 January and 1 May as official ones; each is marked over two days off. The national tourist board adds Orthodox Christmas on 6 and 7 January and other religious dates for those who observe them. Banks and offices close on those days.
