Virpazar, the Crmnica landing stage on Lake Skadar
Virpazar is a village of 232 people in Bar municipality, on the shore of Lake Skadar, and the most visited spot on the lake according to the National Tourism Organisation. Boats and kayaks leave from its quay, the national park has a visitor centre here and Besac fortress sits on the hill above. It's the gateway to Crmnica, Montenegro's Vranac wine country.

- Virpazar is a village of 232 people in Bar municipality, on the shore of Lake Skadar.
- It's the most visited place on the lake and the main departure point for boats and kayaks.
- Besac fortress stands on the hill right above it.
- It's the hub of Crmnica, Vranac wine country, and holds a Grape Festival every September.
You can see Virpazar in an hour, but I'd stay the night. Get on the water by boat or kayak before the day-trippers arrive from the coast, walk up to Besac in the late afternoon and finish with lake fish and a glass of Crmnica Vranac.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
Three bridges and a stone quay
Bar's tourist board lists Virpazar as a historic ensemble: three bridges, the stone embankment, the Besac hill and stone houses with cellars, squeezed between two river channels and the lake.
-
02 To save money
Rent the park's kayak, skip the cruise
If you don't fancy paying for a boat trip, National Parks of Montenegro rents kayaks from €3 an hour. Add the €5 park ticket and it still comes in under any organised outing.

03 Worth the splurge
Vranac in a village cellar
National Parks of Montenegro says several families in the lakeside villages open their wine cellars to visitors, pouring red made from Vranac and Kratošija. Godinje, a few kilometres away, is a village of winegrowers.
Godinje -
04 Getting there
A station on the Bar line
Virpazar has a station on the Bar to Podgorica railway, according to OpenStreetMap. The ZPCG train covers the whole Bar to Podgorica run in just over an hour.

05 My tip
Free maps at the visitor centre
Maps of the park's walking trails and cycle routes are handed out at the Virpazar and Vranjina visitor centres, according to National Parks of Montenegro.

Virpazar makes my list of the prettiest villages, along with Godinje, the winemaking hamlet a few kilometres away.

What I would book
- Tours and ticketsGetYourGuide A boat trip on the lake from Virpazar The quickest way to see the water lilies, islands and birds without organising anything. If you'd rather paddle, the park's kayaks cost less.
- Places to stayBooking.com Stay in Virpazar You're beside the quay with Besac fortress a short walk up the hill.
Virpazar has no monument that will keep you busy for half a day, yet it’s where most people stop on Lake Skadar. The reason is practical. It’s the most convenient landing stage from the Bar and Budva coast, the park has a visitor centre here, and you can be on the water within five minutes of parking. For me it’s the obvious base for the southern side of the lake.
A Crmnica crossroads
Bar’s tourist board describes Virpazar as the place where every road in Crmnica meets, Crmnica being the district that wraps around this shore of the lake. It was once a busy trading and transport hub for Montenegro, and today it’s a day-trip spot and the starting point for lake cruises, visits to monuments and outdoor activities.
The village is listed as a historic ensemble in Bar’s cultural heritage. It sits on a small plain between two channels of the Orahovštica and Crmnica rivers and the lake itself, and the listing takes in three bridges, the stone embankment, the whole fortress hill and the houses at its foot, most of them stone with cellars below ground. The same source praises how the buildings follow the lie of the land, and that’s what I like most here, it doesn’t feel built for visitors.
The lake from the quay
The National Tourism Organisation calls it the most visited settlement on Lake Skadar, and boats and kayaks can be hired here. National Parks of Montenegro names it as one of the four departure points for licensed cruise operators and runs one of its two visitor centres in Virpazar, where you can pick up maps of the trails and cycle routes. One of those routes starts here and runs to Rijeka Crnojevića.
My advice is to go early. In summer the boats fill up with people driving in from the coast, and the still water first thing is when the birdlife is easiest to see.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Virpazar before prices climb.
Besac and the old bridge
Above the village stands Besac fortress, which Bar’s tourist board dates to the 15th century and which commands the whole Crmnica plain. You reach it on a narrow spur off the Bar road over the Sutorman pass, and from the top you see all of Virpazar with the lake behind it.
Down by the water, the old bridge is 19th-century and carries a 20th-century plaque marking 13 July. It’s a small detail you’ll pass on the way to the boats.
Wine, fish and the Grape Festival
Crmnica is vine country. Bar’s tourist board speaks of more than 500 years of winemaking, and the National Tourism Organisation calls the district the cradle of Vranac. National Parks of Montenegro adds that some families in the lakeside villages open their cellars to visitors, and a good village to look for them is Godinje. As for food, lake cooking revolves around carp, smoked bleak and eel.
Every September Virpazar holds its Grape Festival, celebrating grapes, wine and winemakers with cultural events alongside. For anyone visiting in late summer, it’s the best reason to stay over.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Virpazar before prices climb.
Getting there and fitting it in
Virpazar is part of Bar municipality and has a station on the Bar to Podgorica railway. By car it makes a natural stop between the coast and the capital. My plan would be an early boat, a fish lunch in Virpazar and the afternoon in Godinje or up at the fortress.

Frequently asked questions
What is there to do in Virpazar?
Take a boat or a kayak out on Lake Skadar, walk up to Besac fortress, cycle the park's route towards Rijeka Crnojevića and taste Crmnica wine in nearby villages such as Godinje.
Is Virpazar worth visiting?
I think so, as a base rather than a sight. It's the handiest place to get onto the lake from the Bar and Budva coast, it has a park visitor centre and the village itself, with its bridges and stone houses, is a pleasant stop.
How do I get from Bar to Virpazar?
By road over the Sutorman pass, or by train, since Virpazar has a station on the Bar to Podgorica line. Check the timetable for intermediate stops on zpcg.me before you travel.
Can you swim at Virpazar?
The park lists equipped lake beaches at Pješačac, Pelinovo and Murići, and the National Tourism Organisation rates Murići as the best beach on Lake Skadar. Many boat trips from Virpazar also include a swim.
Is there parking in Virpazar?
The national park's price list charges €1 an hour for a car within the park. The page doesn't say which car parks that applies to, so check the signs when you arrive.
When is the Virpazar Grape Festival?
In September, according to Bar's tourist board. It celebrates grapes, wine and local winemakers, with cultural events alongside. I haven't seen the exact date of each year's edition published.
