Month guide
August in Montenegro, festivals on the bay and a packed coast
August is Montenegro's busiest month. Herceg Novi averages 23.9°C, with highs of 29.4°C and around 6 rainy days, and at Tivat it's the hottest month of the year. Kotor holds Boka Night on the third Saturday, Gornja Lastva has its village fiesta on the first, Herceg Novi runs its guitar festival and Kotor sees more cruise calls than in any other month.

- High summer, with a 23.9°C average and 29.4°C highs in Herceg Novi.
- Boka Night on the third Saturday and the Gornja Lastva fiesta on the first.
- Guitar Art Summer Fest and a jazz festival in Herceg Novi.
- Kotor's busiest month for cruise ships and the coast's busiest for visitors.
I'd only pick August for the festivals. If your dates line up with Boka Night, stay the night on the bay and leave the car alone that evening. For everything else, book early and get up early.

Lantern-lit boats in Kotor
Boka Night is held on the third Saturday of August, with a parade of decorated, illuminated boats in front of the old town and fireworks to finish, according to Kotor's tourist board.

02 My tip
The peak month for cruise ships
Luka Kotor's 2026 schedule listed 86 cruise calls in August, more than any other month. Check the port's list before deciding which day to go into town.

A free village fiesta above Tivat
On the first Saturday of August Gornja Lastva, the stone hamlet on the slopes of Vrmac, holds its fiesta, according to Tivat's tourist board. It costs nothing and is about as local as the bay gets.

04 Worth the splurge
Guitar and jazz in Herceg Novi
Herceg Fest lists the Guitar Art Summer Fest from 15 to 20 August and, in the last ten days of the month, the town's jazz festival, which has been running since 2013.
the best time to visit Montenegro
What I would book
August is when Montenegro is at its fullest, its priciest and its liveliest. Beaches, boats and old towns are all running at capacity, but it’s also when the Bay of Kotor puts on its loveliest festivals. I wouldn’t choose it for getting to know the country at an unhurried pace, though I understand anyone who comes precisely for that buzz. If August is the only window you have because of the school holidays, it still works, as long as you plan around the heat and the crowds rather than against them.
Heat, sun and the odd storm
Herceg Novi averages 23.9°C in August, with highs of 29.4°C, the same as July, and nights of around 19.2°C. It gets about 316 hours of sun and some 6 rainy days, although more falls than in July, around 88 mm in all (1961-1990 normals). On average 13 nights stay above 20°C, so air conditioning is worth checking when you book. At Tivat airport, August is the warmest month, with a 25.9°C average over 2013-2022 and 31.6°C as the typical early-afternoon peak. Podgorica has an average high of 31.6°C and about 22 days of 30°C or more; in August 2024 it also hit 41.1°C, and Herceg Novi 39.7°C. The full picture, month by month, is in Montenegro weather.
The bay’s big nights
On the first Saturday of August Gornja Lastva, the stone hamlet above Tivat, holds its fiesta, and on the third Kotor celebrates Boka Night, with its parade of illuminated boats, according to Kotor’s tourist board. Tivat’s Purgatorije theatre festival wraps up at the end of the month. If you can only manage one weekend in August, I’d make it the Boka Night one.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Kotor for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
Music in Herceg Novi
Herceg Fest, the cultural centre that programmes open-air venues such as Kanli kula and Forte Mare, gives the classical guitar festival, Guitar Art Summer Fest, its fixed slot of 15-20 August, and in the last ten days of the month the jazz festival it has backed since 2013. Inland, Nikšić scheduled its Korzo and Nikšićko ljeto summer festivals for August 2026, according to its tourist board.
Crowds and cruise ships
High season on the coast is squeezed into July and August, as the National Tourism Organisation itself says, and in Kotor August is the port’s peak, with 86 calls on the 2026 schedule. On days with two or three ships in, the old town fills with tour groups by mid-morning. My approach is to go into town early or around sunset, once passengers are back on board. The rest of my high-season advice is in Montenegro in summer.

Mountains and lakes
The north is still the way out of the heat. Žabljak averages 13.5°C in August, with highs around 19.6°C, and Kolašin reaches 23.9°C, with a little less rain than in July, on 9 to 11 days. It’s a good time to walk high up, as long as you set off early.
What comes next?
If Montenegro weather in July already sounds like a lot, wait for September. You get almost the same sea with half the hassle; I cover it in Montenegro weather in September.
