The Tara River canyon from a lookout, with forested walls dropping to the valley floor and dead trees in the foreground

April is Montenegro's first proper spring month. Herceg Novi averages 13.7°C, with highs of 18°C and around 190 hours of sunshine, though it still rains on 12 days. It's when the Tara rafting season gets going on the snowmelt, Lipa cave opens for the year and the coast launches festivals such as Herceg Novi's theatre festival and Tivat's Festival of the Wind.

    • Spring, with a 13.7°C average and 18°C highs in Herceg Novi.
    • The Tara rafting season starts, best in spring on the snowmelt.
    • Lipa cave opens and Kotor's museums switch to long hours on the 15th.
    • Theatre in Herceg Novi and the Festival of the Wind in Tivat.

April is my favourite month for the interior. The rivers run high, the rafting is at its best according to the tourist board itself, and on the coast you can already eat outside. Just don't count on a swim.

    Before you go

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 Worth the splurge

      Rafting on the snowmelt

The National Tourism Organisation gives the Tara rafting season as April to October and names spring, with the snowmelt, as the best time.

      rafting on the Tara
    2. 02 Most beautiful

      Kayaking is a spring-only affair

Montenegro's rivers can only be kayaked in April, May and June, according to the National Tourism Organisation, when there's enough water in them.

    3. 03 My tip

      Museums open longer

From 15 April the Perast Museum and the Risan mosaics open 8:00 to 20:00, Tuesday to Sunday, according to Kotor's municipal museums.

    4. 04 Getting there

      Lipa cave reopens

Lipa cave near Cetinje opened its 2026 season on 1 April, with departures from the car park at 10:00, 11:30, 13:00, 14:30 and 16:00.

    What I would book

In April Montenegro changes season. The coast leaves winter’s long rains behind, the snow melts in the north and the rivers run full. For me it’s the best month of the year for the interior, and a very good one for the coast, provided you haven’t come to swim. If you are torn between this month and the one before, compare it with Montenegro weather in March.

    April’s weather

According to the 1961-1990 normals, Herceg Novi averages 13.7°C in April, with highs of 18.1°C and lows of 9.6°C, around 192 hours of sunshine and 12 days of rain. Podgorica is warming up faster, with an average high of 19.1°C. In the mountains Kolašin averages 6.3°C and Žabljak 3.0°C. April 2024 was warmer than usual, averaging 16.1°C in Herceg Novi with ten rainy days, and it still left a day of snow on the ground in Kolašin. The Tivat airport climatography gives an April average of 14.2°C for 2013 to 2022.

    Rivers at their best

April opens the river season. According to the National Tourism Organisation, Tara rafting runs from April to October, and spring, when the snow melts, is the best of it. For river kayaking it’s even clearer; the rivers can only be paddled in April, May and June. If you want lively water, this is your month. Bear in mind too that gov.uk flags a risk of flooding in spring from heavy rain and snowmelt.

    Culture and festivals

In Herceg Novi April means theatre; the HAPS festival has run since 1996 and now showcases professional productions. In 2026 Tivat opened its Festival of the Wind on 24 April, with regattas, fairs and music, running until 23 May. In Kotor, the tourist board’s list includes the stair race and the Kotor Vertical Extreme in April, and dates a camellia festival on 20 April, a nod to the flower the bay is so proud of.

    What opens in April

This is when the season switches on. Lipa cave, near Cetinje, opened on 1 April 2026, with five guided departures a day from the car park. The operator describes 2.5 km of passages and halls and a little train that takes you to the entrance, and the National Tourism Organisation lists the cave experience from €16.90; arrive half an hour early to collect your ticket. From 15 April Kotor’s municipal museums move to long hours, 8:00 to 20:00, at the Perast Museum and the Risan mosaics. And the Solila salt flats in Tivat remain a good birdwatching spot until the end of the month.

    For walkers

With mild temperatures, April is ideal for low and mid-level hiking. I’d explore the lower slopes of Mount Orjen above Herceg Novi, around Vrbanj, and leave the high summits, from Veliki kabao to Durmitor, until the snow has gone. For more sunshine and the start of the boat-trip season, see Montenegro weather in May.
