The Black Lake in Durmitor near Žabljak, ringed by conifer forest, with the mountain reflected in the still water

Coast, lake and mountains in seven days

A week in Montenegro, from the bay to Durmitor

A week is, to my mind, the minimum to see Montenegro properly. Three days on the coast, with Kotor, Perast, Cetinje and Budva; one at Lake Skadar; and three heading north to Ostrog, Durmitor and the Tara bridge. You'll need a car, driving on the right, and four bases, which are Kotor, Budva, Virpazar or Podgorica, and Žabljak.

    • A week is the minimum for coast, lake and mountains.
    • Three days on the coast, one at Lake Skadar and three towards Durmitor.
    • You'll need a car and four bases.
    • Black Lake is at 1,418 m and the park costs €5.

If I could change one thing about the week-long trips I see, it would be swapping a beach day for two nights in Žabljak. Durmitor is what people remember years later.

    Sergio LeponeMy advice

    Before you go

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      Black Lake, at 1,418 m

It covers 0.52 km² and is 49.1 m deep, according to MONSTAT. National Parks rents rowing boats at €10 an hour, and park entry is €5.

      Black Lake
    2. 02 Most beautiful

      Ostrog on the way north

The National Tourism Organisation places it at about 900 m, with churches set in the rock and 17th-century frescoes. Pilgrims walk 3 km up through the forest.

      Ostrog Monastery
    3. 03 Getting there

The Tara bridge on the last day

Five concrete arches, 365 m long, finished in 1940, at the junction for Mojkovac, Žabljak and Pljevlja, says the National Tourism Organisation.

      Đurđevića Tara Bridge
    4. 04 Getting there

      If you have five days

Three nights in Kotor and two in Budva or Bar cover the bay, Lovćen, Cetinje and Lake Skadar. The north is left out, but you won't be rushing.

    5. 05 My tip

If you'd rather keep one base

Instead of moving hotels, stay in Kotor and do day trips. Perast is 14 km away and the cable car climbs to Lovćen in 11 minutes.

Times are a guide, based on the official opening hours checked for this guide.

If you ask me how long Montenegro needs, I say a week. With less you’ll see the coast, which is lovely, but the real country begins when you climb into Durmitor. Here’s a seven-day route by car with four bases, running from the Bay of Kotor to the northern mountains.

Days 1 and 2, the Bay of Kotor

Land at Tivat, 8 km from Kotor, and spend the first afternoon in the old town and up the walls, which climb 4.5 km to St John’s. On day two, Perast in the morning, about 14 km away, with St Nicholas church and its islands, and the cable car from Dub up Lovćen in the afternoon, 11 minutes. You can manage these two days without a car and pick one up afterwards.

    Day 3, Cetinje and Budva

Drive over Lovćen and through Njeguši to Cetinje, the old royal capital, about 48 km from Kotor. Cetinje monastery, the Biljarda (Njegoš’s residence, whose relief map of Montenegro was made by Austro-Hungarian engineers) and King Nikola’s palace fill the morning, then it’s down to Budva, about 27 km more, for an afternoon in its old town. Stay in Budva.

If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Žabljak for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.

Day 4, Sveti Stefan and the lake

In the morning, Sveti Stefan from the beach. In the afternoon, head down to Bar and up to Virpazar beside Lake Skadar, a national park since 1983. Sleep by the lake or in Podgorica, about 31 km away. Lake entry is €5, and the park also hires kayaks if you’d rather paddle than take a boat trip.

Day 5, the lake and Ostrog

An early boat from Virpazar, then north. On the way, Ostrog monastery, which the National Tourism Organisation places at about 900 m, with churches carved into the rock, 17th-century frescoes and a 3 km climb through the forest for pilgrims. It’s about 52 km from Podgorica to Nikšić, then about 74 more to Žabljak. Sleep in Žabljak.

    Day 6, Durmitor

The big day. In the morning, Black Lake, at 1,418 m and 49.1 m deep according to MONSTAT; National Parks rents rowing boats at €10 an hour, and park entry is €5. In the afternoon, the 76 km scenic ring taking in Trsa, Pišće, Nedajno and Mala Crna Gora, on your own or on the park’s €20 tour. Everything on the park is in Durmitor.

Day 7, the Tara bridge and home

Before heading down, stop at the Đurđevića Tara bridge, completed in 1940 with five concrete arches over 365 m, at the junction for Mojkovac, Žabljak and Pljevlja. Then back to Podgorica, about 121 km from Žabljak and nearly two and a half hours, for your flight. If you’ve three more days, the north continues in Montenegro in ten days.

If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Žabljak for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.

    Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Montenegro?

Three for the coast. A week for the coast, the centre and Durmitor, which I'd call the sensible minimum. Ten days for the whole north, with Biogradska Gora and Prokletije.

    What's a good one-week Montenegro itinerary?

The Bay of Kotor and Perast, Lovćen and Cetinje, Budva and Sveti Stefan, Lake Skadar from Virpazar, Ostrog monastery and Durmitor with Black Lake. With a car and four bases.

Can I do Montenegro in a week without a car?

The coast, yes, with buses and the Bar to Podgorica train. Durmitor and Ostrog are tricky without one; you'd need to book tours or trim the plan.

Can I combine Croatia and Montenegro in 7 days?

You can, crossing at Debeli brijeg or Kobila, but you'd have to drop Durmitor. Ideas are on the Montenegro and Croatia page.

Where should I stay on a week in Montenegro?

Two nights in Kotor, one in Budva, one by Lake Skadar in Virpazar or Podgorica, and two in Žabljak, plus a last night near the airport if you fly early.
