Getting to Andorra from the UK and the rest of Europe

The first thing to know about Andorra is that you can’t fly into it or arrive by train. There are two roads in, one from Spain and one from France, and every visitor uses one of them. That sounds awkward, but it makes planning easier than you’d think, because the choice comes down to two questions, which airport you fly to and if you want a car at the other end.

Two roads, two borders

Andorra sits high in the Pyrenees between Catalonia and the French departments of Ariège and Pyrénées-Orientales. From Spain you come up the N-145 from La Seu d’Urgell. From France you drive in on the N-22, the N-20 or the N-320 over the Puymorens pass or through its tunnel, and you cross into the country at Pas de la Casa.

Both borders are open 24 hours a day all year. They are real borders, though. Andorra is neither in the EU nor in Schengen, so you’ll pass customs going in and out, and you need your passport. The UK government asks you to meet Schengen passport rules because you enter through France or Spain, and Spain’s foreign ministry points out that leaving Andorra means re-entering Schengen under the new Entry/Exit System. Which airport should a British visitor pick?

Two airports do the heavy lifting. Toulouse-Blagnac is 185 km from Andorra la Vella by road and its own website lists direct flights to London, Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh and Birmingham. Barcelona-El Prat is 208 km away and has more coaches up to Andorra than anywhere else. Girona, Reus, Perpignan, Carcassonne and Alguaire are all within 200 km too, but with far fewer onward links.

The airfield people call Andorra airport is Andorra-La Seu, in Spain. It’s 17.4 km from the border, and I’d leave it out of your plans for now because its scheduled flights page dates from 2024. The comparison is in flights to Andorra.

The coach, which is what I’d take

From Toulouse, Andorra by Bus leaves Matabiau station at 09:45, 13:45, 17:45 and 21:45, calls at the airport half an hour later and reaches Andorra four hours after leaving the city. The web fare is €36 one way or €64 return, and you’ll find the stops and my tips in Toulouse to Andorra.

From Barcelona there are two operators at El Prat. Andorra by Bus runs from Terminal 1 every two hours, calling at Terminal 2 and Diagonal, for €33 one way. Andorra Direct Bus advertises 16 departures a day through the airport and Sants, from €35. Both end at the national bus station on Carrer de la Cúria in Andorra la Vella. Driving up in a hire car

A car makes sense if you’re skiing with your own kit or want to explore Ordino and La Massana at your own pace. Andorra Turisme says you don’t need an international driving licence, and the UK government confirms a UK photocard licence is fine.

Winter is the catch. From 1 November to 15 May you must carry snow chains or use winter tyres, and heavy snow can shut roads for a while. For live road conditions, Andorra’s mobility service answers on (+376) 1802 1802. The rest is in driving to Andorra.

And the train?

You can get close. French trains from Toulouse stop at L’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre, about 11 km from the border, and a Hife coach timed to the trains runs twice a day each way through Pas de la Casa. On the Spanish side, high-speed trains reach Lleida Pirineus and Andorra by Bus goes up from the station in 2 hours 15 minutes. It suits rail fans more than people in a hurry, and it’s all laid out in train to Andorra. Before you book anything

One thing catches British visitors out more than any timetable. The European Health Insurance Card and the GHIC are not valid in Andorra, so take out travel insurance that covers medical costs and mountain rescue if you plan to ski or hike.
