Off-piste in Andorra, from Arcalís to Grandvalira

Some resorts have freeride zones. One resort in Andorra has built its whole reputation on them, and that’s Ordino Arcalís. If you’re after untracked snow, this page will help you decide where to go, who with, and what to check before you leave the piste, which in the mountains matters more than anything else.

How I’d start

If you’ve never been off-piste, this is the order I’d follow. First, a day in the Arcalís beginners’ zone or along the edges of Grandvalira’s runs, where untracked snow is a couple of turns from the markers. Then a session with a guide to learn to read a slope and use a transceiver. Only after that, the long lines. Arcalís also runs a season-long freeride school for 12 to 18-year-olds, built around technique and respect for the mountain, which strikes me as a sensible idea if you’re travelling with teenagers who already ski well. With direct coaches from Toulouse and Barcelona airports, a long weekend of guided freeride is realistic even from the UK.

Why Ordino Arcalís is the benchmark

Arcalís sits at the northern tip of the country, between 1,940 and 2,625 metres, and faces north. The resort explains that this aspect shields the snow from too much sun and that the surrounding peaks stop the wind stripping away fresh snowfall. Andorra’s tourist board goes as far as calling it a natural fridge.

In numbers, it has 3.4 kilometres of marked freeride routes in three big zones and more than 120 unmarked lines to explore. There’s a beginners’ zone and an advanced one, one of them linked to the Feixans drag lift, plus the Creussans chairlift, which the resort says is the only one in the Pyrenees serving a south-facing freeride zone. On cold, dry days when the north side is firm, that exception is gold.

The Freeride World Tour and the 2026 World Championships

Arcalís has hosted the Freeride World Tour since 2015. Organisers pick the competition day within a weather window and a panel of judges scores each line. In February 2026 the resort went a step further with the first FIS Freeride World Championships, from the 1st to the 6th, with 67 riders in skiing and snowboarding, men and women, and a single deciding run.

The date of the next tour stop hasn’t been published. I’ll add it here when it is, but I wouldn’t book a trip around watching it yet.

What about Grandvalira and Pal Arinsal?

Grandvalira has 14 freeride zones, rated intermediate to expert and marked on the piste map, and its facts page talks of 12 kilometres of freeride areas. Its ski school runs a Freeride Center with qualified mountain guides, private lessons and camps on untreated snow, snow science and using a transceiver, shovel and probe. Pal Arinsal has opened new freeride and freetouring areas inside the resort. Its Adventure Center charges €251 per instructor for a four-hour session for one to six people, skis and safety kit included. For a group of four, I think that’s the best money you’ll spend all week.

The law, your insurance and the snow

Grandvalira puts it in writing, quoting Andorra’s 2022 mountain resorts law. Off-piste skiing is the skier’s own responsibility. For a British visitor that has two consequences. The GHIC isn’t valid in Andorra, so you need proper travel and medical insurance, and off-piste cover is one of the things that varies most between winter sports policies. Check yours before you drop in.

The official advice is familiar and still widely ignored. Ride with someone, carry a transceiver, shovel and probe, control your speed and wear a helmet. The tourist board adds that in spring you should avoid the sunniest hours, when wet-snow avalanches release.

Where to check the avalanche risk

meteo.ad, the national weather service, publishes Andorra’s avalanche danger bulletin. It splits the country into three zones, north, centre and south, and gives off-piste snowpack depth at 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 metres on north and south slopes.
