Andorra at Christmas, markets, nativity plays and skiing in one trip

What makes Christmas in Andorra more than a ski week is its run of home-grown traditions from early December to Twelfth Night. Wooden-chalet markets, living nativity plays, a log that produces presents and a Three Kings parade in every parish, all a short drive from slopes that open on 4 December 2026. What I can’t give you yet, because nobody has published them, are this year’s exact market dates.

The markets, parish by parish

The big one is in Andorra la Vella, which, says Andorra Turisme, becomes a Christmas village, with a market of wooden chalets inspired by Father Christmas’s home in the north, stalls of crafts and decorations, local food, live music and things for children. It sits nicely with a stroll along Avinguda Meritxell and the Plaça de la Rotonda, where the big tree goes up, and the town is covered in things to do in Andorra la Vella.

Escaldes-Engordany runs Sabors d’Advent, open from early to mid-December, where alongside the crafts you can taste dishes from local chefs to live music. The Santa Llúcia fair, whose day is 13 December and which often stays until Christmas, is shared between three parishes, Ordino among them. None of the three had 2026 dates on 29 September.

Nativity scenes, Pastorets and the Tió

Andorra shares Catalonia’s passion for the nativity scene. Canillo lays out a giant one across its streets and squares. Engordany has one of the pioneering living nativities of the Catalan-speaking world, created by Esteve Albert i Corp, first performed in 1956 and revived by Escaldes-Engordany in 2014. In Sant Julià de Lòria, Els Pastorets, a shepherds’ play, has been staged since 1994 using Josep M. Folch i Torres’s original.

The Tió is the custom that baffles British visitors most. It’s a log that families choose in early December, cover with a blanket and feed every day until, on Christmas Eve or Day, children beat it with sticks while singing so that it ‘poos’ their presents. Some parishes put a giant Tió in the square, and the Bosque Vivo in Ordino is a whole woodland themed around it.

Then there are the bears. Ordino puts on L’última Ossa, a bear play full of satire, early in December in the Casa d’Areny-Plandolit gardens, a slot it has kept since 2017. Canillo, meanwhile, dusted off an older ritual, and at the El Vilar festival in late December 2025 the Comú staged the old bear ritual again at Sant Joan de Caselles, where about a hundred people saw it for the first time since 1942.

The days that change your plans

Three dates matter. No shop in the country opens on Christmas Day, and the same goes for 1 January. St Stephen’s Day on the 26th is a holiday with shops allowed to trade. For something to do on the 25th, Naturland opens on both Christmas Day and Epiphany, with Nordic skiing and a combined Tobotronc and lunch offer running from late morning to mid-afternoon.

On the slopes, the festive fortnight is the busiest and dearest of the season. Over that fortnight groups lose their discount at Grandvalira, and since day passes follow demand pricing, booking online a few days ahead, which the resort says saves up to 15 %, pays off more than ever. The Three Kings, the end of the season

The afternoon of 5 January is parade time. Andorra Turisme explains that the Three Kings, with their pages, postmen and floats, visit every parish in the Principality. Epiphany was a holiday in the 2026 calendar, and in 2027 it’s a Wednesday. After Epiphany, Spanish families head home and one of the best windows of the winter opens, covered in Andorra in January.

How I’d plan it

With children, I’d come between 18 and 23 December for markets, a nativity scene and a couple of days on the snow, and stay in Andorra la Vella. For a mainly skiing trip, I’d sleep up in Soldeu or Pas de la Casa and drop down to the capital one evening.
