Andorra in summer, from mountain lakes to village festivals

In winter Andorra means skiing, but in summer it’s a different country. The snow pulls back from the peaks, the lakes are a few hours’ walk away and the ski areas turn into mountain parks. If you’re wondering what to do in Andorra in summer, the short answer is go up. The longer one, with dates and my own preferences, follows.

A short, high summer

The tourist board describes its summers as short, warm and fairly dry, and places the warm season from June to September. Down in the valley, meteo.ad’s normals work out at 16.5°C (62°F) in June, 19.4°C (67°F) in July and 19.2°C (67°F) in August. That’s T-shirt weather at noon and a jacket at night. Up at 2,300 metres by a lake the air is different, and afternoon storms are part of the scenery. So my summer rule is to set off early and be down before the sky closes in.

The high-mountain window is precise. For anything above 1,700 metres, the tourist board’s window opens in late June and closes in late September. Before that there’s snow on the tops, and after it the first cold snaps.

Lakes and high valleys

If you only do one thing in summer, make it a lake. Tristaina, in Ordino, is the most rewarding, with the first lake about 40 minutes from the car park, and in summer the road shuts in the daytime so you go up by gondola. Pessons, above Grau Roig, is tougher, and Juclar, in the Incles valley, is the country’s largest. All of them, with distances and climbs, are in lakes in Andorra.

The UNESCO-listed Madriu valley is summer’s other great walk, with guides from May to October. And the Incles valley is explored by the electric train that runs from mid-June to early September, while the road is closed to cars.

Adventure parks at the ski areas

The resorts don’t shut in summer, they change shape. In 2026 Mont Magic family park in Canillo opened on 20 June with a zip line, the Màgic Gliss toboggan, and canoes and pedal boats on the Forn lake. Naturland, in Sant Julià de Lòria, opened between 27 June and 6 September with the Tobotronc, a 5.3-kilometre alpine toboggan. Pal Arinsal turns into an activity zone and a Bike Park with up to 60 kilometres of trails, open daily from 20 June to 13 September 2026. And the Funicamp ran from Encamp to Solanelles from 11 July to 8 September.

One detail hardly anyone uses. The 2026-27 Andorra Pass season ticket includes the lifts and the Bike Park in summer 2027, so if you buy it for skiing, the summer comes much cheaper.

Summer with children

It’s the most common question, and fair enough, as Andorra’s summer is built for families. My essentials would be Mont Magic, Naturland’s Tobotronc, the Incles train and one of the short Macarulla trails the tourist board suggests, with carved figures and an activity booklet. With older children, the Ordino zip lines or the Bosc Aventura at Engolasters. The full plan is in Andorra with kids.

Churches, festivals and shopping

Six Romanesque churches, Santa Coloma and Sant Joan de Caselles among them, can be visited with a guide in July and August under Romànic de bat a bat. On the night of 23 June the Midsummer fire wheels burn, and July and August bring each parish’s festa major. The 2026 summer sales ran from 19 June to 30 August.

Smaller plans are worth it too. Summer 2026 also offered guided visits twice a week to the shepherds’ orri of Encenrera, at Grau Roig, where cheese was made above 2,000 metres. The 603-metre Canillo Tibetan bridge ran night visits on Thursdays and Saturdays in the same months. And Casa Cristo in Encamp, a village house turned folk museum, opens daily through both summer months.

When to go within summer

My pick is the last week of June or the first half of July, with everything open and fewer cars. August is the year’s busiest month on the roads, going by Mobilitat’s forecasts. Flying in, Toulouse and Barcelona are the airports to aim for, and a coach from either spares you the border queues at the wheel.
