Driving to Andorra from the UK or a hire car desk

Most British visitors reach Andorra with a hire car from Barcelona or Toulouse, and a few drive all the way down through France. Either way the rules are simple, the roads are good and the traps are predictable, the queue at the border on a busy day and a mountain winter that lasts half the year. Here’s how I’d approach it with what the Andorran government, visitandorra and gov.uk publish.

Two ways in, and which one suits you

There are exactly two road entrances. From Spain, the N-145 climbs up from La Seu d’Urgell into Sant Julià de Lòria. From France, you arrive at Pas de la Casa on the N-22, fed by the N-20 or N-320 over or under the Puymorens pass. If you’re coming from a Barcelona flight, Barcelona to Andorra covers the route in detail, and Toulouse to Andorra does the same for the French side.

Inside the country, visitandorra counts 275 km of road in 468 km². The main artery is the CG-2, running from the French border through Canillo and Encamp down to the capital, with branches to La Massana, Ordino and the high valleys. Everything is close. Very little of it is flat.

How far is it?

Andorra Turisme’s official guide gives road distances to Andorra la Vella of 185 km from Toulouse, 208 km from Barcelona and 163 km from Perpignan, and says you can drive without an international licence. On a map those look short, but the last stretch on either side is mountain road, so I’d budget more time than a satnav suggests, especially in winter or on a summer Saturday.

Licence, hire car and the rules that bite

Your UK photocard licence is valid on Andorran roads, gov.uk says. You drive on the right, as in France and Spain. The local tourist board says hire firms ask for a valid licence and a credit card, and it’s worth reading what the insurance covers before you take a Spanish or French hire car across a border that isn’t in the EU.

Drink-driving is where I’d be strictest with myself. gov.uk lists the penalties, fines as high as €600, a driving ban of two months and possibly the car being impounded. With tunnels, hairpins and snow, I wouldn’t have even one.

Why the time you cross matters more than the route

The border never closes, day or night, all year round. The problem is volume. For summer 2026, Andorra’s traffic department forecast around 470,000 vehicles through the entry roads in August, with daily peaks of up to 17,000, and set up an extra lane at the Spanish border.

The forecast peak windows were very specific. At the Spanish border, 10:00 to 14:30 for arrivals and 16:00 to 20:00 for departures. At the French border, 9:00 to 12:30 in and 14:00 to 19:00 out. I’d plan the opposite of everyone else, arriving early and leaving after dinner, and I’d avoid Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings altogether.

Leaving is also when you may meet customs. According to gov.uk, officers on both the French and Spanish sides watch tobacco coming out of Andorra closely, and they can confiscate the surplus and even the car. Do you need snow chains to drive to Andorra?

From 1 November to 15 May, yes. Winter tyres or snow chains are compulsory on every Andorran road, whatever the weather that morning. Hire cars picked up at the airports in Barcelona or Toulouse won’t necessarily have either, so ask when you book. The government’s winter manual says chains go on the driven wheels, you shouldn’t exceed 50 km/h with them fitted, and it’s sensible to practise putting them on before you need to.

Where the car helps and where it doesn’t

In Andorra la Vella and Escaldes the car is more nuisance than help. There are thousands of spaces in public car parks, but you pay by the hour and the shopping streets are best on foot. The car earns its keep in the high valleys, at the ski areas and at trailheads the national buses don’t reach. Prices and the free skier parking in Encamp are in parking in Andorra.
