Andorra's shopping centres, and which one suits what you want

Andorra doesn’t do out-of-town retail parks the way Britain does. What it has is a historic department store in the middle of the capital, a couple of very large malls and several hypermarkets by the borders. Knowing which is which saves a lot of time and some petrol.

The big names in the centre

Illa Carlemany is the one most people know. The tourist board says it was designed by the architect Pere Aixàs, opened in summer 2009 and covers 50,000 m² over four shopping floors and three levels of parking with 600 spaces. It sits between the two main shopping streets, Vivand in Escaldes and Avinguda Meritxell in Andorra la Vella, and according to Andorra Turisme it won the award for Europe’s best small shopping centre in 2012. Inside are more than 70 shops and restaurants, a five-screen cinema, a gym, a pharmacy and a Caprabo supermarket on the ground floor.

Pyrénées is Andorran retail history in one building. The Pérez family founded it in the 1930s, when the country still lived off farming and imported French goods began to draw shoppers from across the border. Today it has perfume, fashion, sport and mountain gear, homeware on the third floor, a food hall with Ametller Origen fruit and cheeses from around the world, a FNAC on the ground floor and a seven-storey car park. Close by are Uailo Department Store, with fashion, technology, sport, homeware and a Super U supermarket, and The Embassy, in the El Diamant building, which leans towards jewellery, watches, niche perfume and designer eyewear. EO! Complex Andorra occupies the old Poblet del Fener; for now its car park runs 24 hours and the shops will arrive gradually, so I wouldn’t plan around it yet. On Vivand, the Júlia Centre devotes more than 1,800 m² to perfume and cosmetics.

Sant Julià de Lòria, the southern gateway

Drive up from Barcelona and the first thing you meet is big-box retail. Epizen, run by the Pyrénées group, spreads 60,000 m² over three floors with Primor, Lefties, Sprinter, Tezenis, an optician, Family Cash supermarkets and fast food. Its official page says it opens every day from 9am to 9pm, with free parking.

River, on the main road in from Spain, is a different animal. In practice it’s a two-storey hypermarket covering over 20,000 m², groceries below and electronics, clothing, toys and car accessories above, with over 500 parking spaces, petrol stations nearby and a waste-water point for motorhomes. I look at it more closely in supermarkets in Andorra.

Pas de la Casa, the northern gateway

On the French side, Pyrénées Pas de la Casa follows the capital’s model with fashion, beauty, electronics, snow wear, a food hall, a FNAC and a McDonald’s. The tourist board adds that the village has hypermarkets and department stores at its entrances. Worth it if you’re already there to ski, not as a shopping trip from the capital.

The tourist board also points out that Pas de la Casa is the highest commercial town in Europe, and that its trading role took off in the 1960s and 1970s alongside the ski area. When do the sales start?

Andorra Turisme puts it plainly, the sales begin earlier than in neighbouring countries. Summer sales at the end of June, winter sales at the end of December, plus Black Friday and Cyber Monday. What I haven’t found is the 2026 date for the Shop in Andorra Festival, held at the start of the winter season, so I won’t guess it.

On outlets, I’ll be direct. The official list of large retail spaces doesn’t include anything called an outlet, and I have no official source listing them. If price is the aim, I’d go in the sales.

Before you fill the trolley

Standard trading hours end at 8pm on Sundays through Thursdays and at 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and there are only four closing days in the year. For a British visitor, the real ceiling is at home, £390 of other goods into Great Britain, with tax and duty on the whole value if you go over. The full rules are in Andorra duty free allowance.
