Hotels in Escaldes for a spa break in Andorra

Plenty of British visitors think of Andorra purely as a ski destination. Escaldes-Engordany is the parish that makes the case for coming at any time of year. It has the thermal water, half of the main shopping street and, a few minutes’ drive up the hill, the gateway to the country’s only World Heritage Site. For a spa break it’s the natural base, and a serious alternative to the capital.

A town joined to the capital

Created in 1978, Escaldes-Engordany is the youngest of the seven parishes, and its town used to be two, Escaldes on one side of the Engordany bridge and Engordany on the other. Today it merges with Andorra la Vella so completely that one shopping street carries on from Avinguda Meritxell into Avinguda Carlemany. The statistics office counted 16,347 people living here in late summer 2026.

That continuity is its big advantage. You sleep a step away from the capital with the shops on the same avenue, no bus required. If you’d rather ride, the L1, the Express and the night bus connect Escaldes with Andorra la Vella and Sant Julià de Lòria.

Getting here from Britain

Andorra has no airport of its own, so most British visitors fly to Barcelona or Toulouse and take a coach. Andbus charges €36 single from Toulouse and €33 from Barcelona airport (web fares, September 2026), and both routes finish at the bus station in neighbouring Andorra la Vella. From there it’s a short walk or a quick hop on the L1 into Escaldes, which makes this one of the easiest spa breaks to reach without hiring a car.

Staying for Caldea

Caldea sits over the Roc del Metge thermal spring, where the water rises at 70 °C according to Andorra Turisme, and inside it’s cooled to 34-37 °C. Tickets run by age, there’s a children’s spa for 3 to 8-year-olds, and Inúu is the adults-only area. I couldn’t read prices on Caldea’s official site, so check its own box office or my page on Caldea.

Here’s my own rule for picking a hotel instead. Upper Escaldes, where Avinguda Carlemany begins, has the Caldes project along the river, the Espai Caldes glass viewpoint and the art centre around it, and the tourist office sits on Plaça Santa Anna. It’s the most characterful corner of the parish and leaves Caldea a short stroll away. The line Andorra Turisme uses to sell the parish says it all, four and five-star hotels right below the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley.

With children, check the ages before booking. Classic is from 5, Plus from 12, Premium from 16. If yours are small, a hotel with its own pool saves the afternoons when Caldea doesn’t fit.

Shopping on foot

Vivand and Avinguda Carlemany are the Escaldes stretch of The Shopping Mile, which starts back on Avinguda Meritxell in the capital. In upper Escaldes, Avinguda Escoles and Carrer Picó gather several model-making shops, according to Andorra Turisme. A hotel on Carlemany lets you drop bags off mid-afternoon. There’s more in Avinguda Carlemany. One thing to remember on the way home is that duty-free limits are per person and the French and Spanish customs are strict about tobacco.

Skiing from Escaldes

For Grandvalira, the nearest way into its ski area from here is the Encamp sector. With a car, you can ride the Funicamp or park free in Encamp’s council car parks with that day’s lift pass. For two or three days on the snow within a spa break, I think it’s a lovely combination. For a pure ski week, I’d stay in a village with a lift.

Engolasters and the Madriu

Up the Engolasters road, the CS-200, you reach the lake, Sant Miquel d’Engolasters church and the popular trailhead into the Madriu Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, covering 4,247 hectares. Engolasters isn’t a village but a meadow with barns, a church and a lake, and Els Vilars sits on the same hillside. With a car, you could look for somewhere quieter up there.
