Skiing in Andorra, resort by resort

Andorra is a ski country first and a shopping stop second, whatever its reputation in the UK. It has 308 km of pistes spread across three downhill resorts that now share one operator and one lift pass, plus a cross-country area in the south. The real question isn’t whether it’s worth skiing here, it’s where, because the three resorts feel very different.

Three resorts, one lift pass

Grandvalira Resorts now runs every downhill area in the country. Grandvalira, between Encamp and Canillo, has 215 km. Pal Arinsal, above La Massana, has 63. Ordino Arcalís, up at the northern tip, has 30.5. The merger began with Arcalís in 2018 and was completed in 2022-23 when Pal Arinsal joined, which is where the Andorra Pass came from. There’s also the Nord Pass, valid only at Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís, which makes sense if you’re staying in La Massana or Ordino.

The detail I’d pay most attention to is this one. Buy a Grandvalira pass for at least two days in a row and it’s valid at the other two resorts as well. So you can stay wherever suits you and switch resort with the weather. Every type of pass and price is laid out on the Andorra ski pass page.

Which resort suits your level?

For beginners I’d look at two places. The Canillo and El Tarter sectors of Grandvalira have gentle runs, snow gardens and a beginner pass valid just on the nursery lifts. And Pal Arinsal, which markets itself as the most family-friendly resort in Andorra, with a gondola from the centre of La Massana and a ski school in each of its two sectors.

If you’re a confident intermediate who wants mileage, Grandvalira is the answer. It claims the title of biggest ski area in the Pyrenees, with seven linked sectors, top stations of around 2,500 to 2,600 m and runs that have hosted the World Cup, such as the Avet in Soldeu and the Àliga in El Tarter.

If you’re after untracked snow, Ordino Arcalís is another game altogether. It faces north, runs from 1,940 to 2,625 m, counts 21 freeride zones with 120 routes and has been a Freeride World Tour venue since 2015. Families aren’t left out either, thanks to the Megaverda, billed by the resort as the Pyrenees’ longest green run.

When to go and how long the lifts run

All three downhill resorts run their 2026-27 season from 4 December 2026 until 4 April 2027, with lifts turning from 9am to 5pm, snow permitting. Naturland opens its cross-country trails six days earlier, on 28 November. For the full calendar, see the Andorra ski season page.

For a British family tied to school holidays, February half-term is the obvious slot, but it’s busy and the group discount doesn’t apply in February either. If you can choose, January away from weekends and the second half of March are the weeks I’d book.

Getting there from the UK

There’s no airport in Andorra. Most British skiers fly to Toulouse or Barcelona and take a coach. On its website in September 2026, a single with Andorra by Bus cost €36 from Toulouse and €33 from Barcelona El Prat, and Andorra Direct Bus €35 from El Prat with 16 departures a day. If you drive a hire car up from France, you’ll cross the Envalira pass or its tunnel near Grau Roig, and from 1 November to 15 May the law requires chains or winter tyres.

Where to stay for skiing

This is where people cut the wrong corner. Andorra la Vella is cheaper, but every morning means a drive and a car park. For Grandvalira, Soldeu and El Tarter have ski-in hotels, and Pas de la Casa and Grau Roig put you straight on the snow from the French side. Stay in Encamp and the Funicamp lifts you up in about 25 minutes, with free council car parks at the base. For Pal Arinsal, pick La Massana or Arinsal, both with a gondola in the village. Before you pack

The FCDO is clear that the GHIC and EHIC are not valid in Andorra, so buy travel and medical insurance with winter sports cover before you go. By Andorran law, lift passes are personal and non-transferable, and off-piste skiing is at your own risk. Grandvalira’s free children’s circuits are open to under-12s and under-fives ski free there, which I cover in family skiing in Andorra.
