How safe is Andorra for a British visitor?

Short answer, yes. Andorra is about as low-risk as a holiday destination gets in Europe, and I’d happily send a family or a solo traveller there. The longer answer is that the dangers are different from the ones people usually ask about. It’s not pickpockets you need to plan for, it’s the mountains, the roads in winter and a couple of laws that are stricter than at home.

What the official sources say about crime

The UK government’s travel advice puts it simply, street crime is rare. It still suggests the usual care, keeping your belongings in sight, not carrying all your cash in one place and keeping a copy of your passport. Andorra Turisme goes further and calls it one of the safest countries in the world, with very low crime and no begging. Spain’s foreign ministry imposes no travel restrictions and describes almost the whole country as trouble-free.

In practice I’d treat Andorra la Vella or Escaldes at night like any small, well-kept town, and just keep an eye on your bag in the busiest shopping streets.

The police, and where to find them

Andorra has a single national police force of around 300 people, including support staff, according to its website. The emergency number is 110 and the switchboard is +376 872 000. The headquarters is in the L’Obac administrative building in Escaldes-Engordany, open to the public every day from 8:00 to 21:00 and taking reports around the clock. Smaller offices in Pas de la Casa, Encamp and Canillo keep office hours.

If you lose something or think it’s been stolen, Andorra Turisme’s advice is to report it to the police. For your insurer, that report is the document you’ll need.

Laws that catch British visitors out

This is where a group trip can go wrong. The UK government says drinking alcohol in the street is illegal in Andorra, so the après-ski beer on a bench is off. There’s zero tolerance of drugs, with refusal of entry, expulsion, fines and prison all possible, and Spain’s foreign ministry adds that non-residents are usually held on remand. Drink-driving can cost up to €600 and a two-month ban, and the car can be immobilised. The FCDO also warns about spiked drinks in bars and clubs.

One more thing that surprises people. Hotels and tourist apartments must register every overnight guest’s name with the police, which is why reception asks for your passport.

Mountains and weather are the real risk

Spain’s foreign ministry warns of heavy snow that closes roads and sometimes border crossings, nights of minus 10 to minus 20 degrees in the high mountains and avalanche risk, and it rates the high mountains as medium risk in the depths of winter or in poor visibility. The UK government adds altitude sickness to the list.

Andorra’s police published their basic mountain advice in June 2026, and I’d follow all of it. Go with someone or leave your route with a friend, work out your return time, check the forecast and allow for summer storms, carry water, food and a windproof, keep your phone fully charged, pack a head torch if you set off late and take a whistle. For the drive up from Toulouse or Barcelona in winter, chains or winter tyres are compulsory between 1 November and 15 May, so check the car and the Andorra road conditions before you set off.

Insurance matters more than usual

Your GHIC or EHIC isn’t valid in Andorra, according to the UK government, and it asks you to take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling.
