Soldeu, the village that runs on Grandvalira time

Plenty of British skiers know Soldeu better than they know Andorra. It’s the name on the package, the village at the end of the transfer. I like it because it doesn’t pretend to be anything else, a Canillo village shaped around Grandvalira, with a little chapel that holds pieces no other church in the country has.

At the centre of 215 km of pistes

Grandvalira places the Soldeu sector strategically at the centre of the resort, with wide runs and steep descents. From here you link into every other sector of a 215 km ski area, and in 2026-27 you can ski here from 4 December until 4 April. If your aim is to ski a lot, there’s no better starting point in Andorra, and I set out how I’d plan the week in skiing Grandvalira.

The Avet is the run everyone mentions. It staged the World Cup Finals in 2019 and 2023, and on 6 and 7 March 2027 it welcomes the women’s giant slalom and slalom. In Soldeu itself there’s also Ski Canaro, a tiny area with two nursery slopes and a sledging run, which hadn’t announced its 2026-27 opening date when I checked.

Sant Bartomeu, the chapel people walk past

In the centre of the village stands the chapel of Sant Bartomeu. Andorra’s tourist board says that for centuries it was the private chapel of Casa Molines, one of the richest and most prestigious manor houses in the parish. Inside is a sixteenth-century altarpiece, one of the few Renaissance examples in Andorra, and a canopy, a painting on wood hung above the altar showing Christ in glory, dated to the fifteenth century and described by the same source as unique in the country.

The porch was removed in the early twentieth century and the chapel was restored in 1985 using old photographs. It has a simple bell gable, like the churches in El Tarter, Ransol and Prats, a family likeness that Andorra Turisme puts down to their following the model of fourteenth-century Andorran houses. Every 24 August the village celebrates its patron here.

What is there to do in Soldeu in summer?

Less than you might expect if you’re after a lively village, and plenty if you like walking. The Incles valley begins a kilometre away, according to the Comú’s walking guide, and for me it’s the best summer outing in this corner of Andorra. In high season it’s closed to cars and an electric train runs to the far end, all explained in the Incles valley.

For something car-free and unhurried, the Camí del Gall follows the shady side of the Valira d’Orient down to Canillo, 7 km marked with a capercaillie symbol, crossing a little suspension bridge over a waterfall that freezes solid in winter. On Saturdays from July to mid-August, Golf Soldeu also runs a 90-minute beekeeping tour, bookable in advance and suitable from age six.

At the July 2026 fiesta a 1,000 m² wooden maze opened on the Soldeu platform, run by Grandvalira. The Comú wants it to become a fixture of future fiestas.

Fitter walkers can aim higher. The Comú lists La Portella, a free, unstaffed six-bed hut at 2,265 m, reached from Soldeu via the Fontanals in roughly three hours, with a fireplace and a spring beside it. I’d only go with a settled forecast and a proper map, and I’d tell someone at the hotel where I was heading.

Shopping and getting about

Canillo parish keeps most of its shops in Canillo, Soldeu and El Tarter, mainly ski and mountain gear. If you’re here in early April, the Outlet Fair the Comú holds in plaça Casa Calbó is worth a look; in 2026 it ran on the 5th with discounts of 40 to 70%. More ideas are in clothes and sports shops.

National bus L3 connects Andorra la Vella with Soldeu via Canillo. The Comú has also launched a tender to redesign the CG-2 through the village centre and give pedestrians more room, so expect some roadworks over the next few years.

Where to stay in Soldeu

I won’t repeat what I’ve already laid out in hotels in Soldeu, where I explain how to choose by walking distance to the lift and parking. My short version is that in winter it’s worth paying to sleep in Soldeu, and in summer Canillo makes more sense, with more life of its own out of season.
