Self-catering apartments in Andorra, and when they make sense

In Andorra’s ski villages, self-catering isn’t the oddball option, it’s close to the default. People searching in Spanish look up apartments in Pas de la Casa, El Tarter, Soldeu and Canillo far more often than any single hotel. Here’s where a flat makes sense, what tax it pays and when I’d choose one over a hotel.

Flat or hotel?

My rule of thumb is simple. With four or more of you, or for a full week, the flat wins. You get a kitchen, a lounge where ski kit can dry, somewhere to store boots and skis, and your own timetable, and five evenings of supermarket dinners cost a lot less than five meals out.

For a couple on a weekend, though, I’d book a hotel. There’s a tax detail almost nobody spots. A registered holiday flat pays €2 per person per night, the same as a four-star, while a two or three-star hotel pays €1.50. Where the flats are

In the ski villages, and Grandvalira sells them itself. Its accommodation section groups stays by sector, ski-in in Pas de la Casa and Grau Roig, at the foot of the slopes with a gondola in Canillo, El Tarter and Soldeu, and half a kilometre’s drive from the Funicamp in Encamp.

Pas de la Casa deserves its own paragraph. In the 2022 archived copy of Encamp council’s accommodation listing, the first page was dominated by furnished flats and aparthotels in Pas de la Casa billed as ski-in ski-out. That’s four years old, but it matches what people still look for today. If you’re skiing without a car, this is where a flat is most logical. The quieter valleys

Away from Grandvalira, the councils of La Massana and Ordino do publish names on their tourism sites. In La Massana, Xixerella Park in Erts has 28 flats with a spa, 16 for 4 to 6 people and 12 for 2 to 4, a few minutes from Pal and Arinsal according to its listing. Anyós Park mixes rooms, studios and flats with a spa, and Apartaments Bonet sits in the heart of Pal’s historic village, about 2 km from the ski sector.

In Ordino, the parish list includes three aparthotels, Rialb in El Serrat, Annapurna in Ansalonga and La Tulipa in Arans, plus flats in Llorts, Arans, La Cortinada and the main village. Flat and lift pass together

If you’re skiing, Grandvalira will sell the flat and the passes together. For the first weekend of the winter it listed two nights for two people with passes from €219 and three nights from €266, with prices updated weekly and a unit its site doesn’t make entirely clear. The plus is that your passes are sorted, with no ticket office on the first morning. The mechanics are in Andorra ski holidays. A formality worth knowing

One thing catches people out. According to the UK government, anyone renting out hotel rooms or tourist flats in Andorra has to report each overnight guest to the police by name, and self-catering is no exception. So expect to hand over everyone’s passport at check-in, even at a flat with no reception desk.
