Andorra in August, summer from start to finish

August is when everyone wants to be in Andorra at once. The weather is good, the mountains are open and half of Europe is on holiday, British school holidays included. That brings real advantages and one obvious cost, paid on the road. Here’s what’s worth it, which dates to note and how I’d set things up so the trip isn’t spent in a queue.

How warm is August?

August’s normal mean on the valley floor is 19.2°C (67°F), a figure calculated from the Andorran weather service’s bulletins. That’s practically July’s figure (19.4°C) and four degrees above September. As a day-and-night average, it means proper summer at midday and cool evenings, so a light jacket always comes in handy. Up by the lakes, walking is comfortable. Summer and autumn are the wettest seasons, though, usually with afternoon storms in the mountains.

A sunrise worth the alarm

The month’s most curious date is 7 August. That day at 7:37, from the Tristaina solar viewpoint, a 25-metre platform on Peyreguils peak at 2,701 metres, the rising sun peeps through a gap in the Arcalís peak for three minutes. You need to be up there before dawn, so check with Ordino Arcalís how to get up at that hour.

Mid-month festivals

Andorra la Vella’s festa major, which starts at the end of July, finished on 3 August in 2026. Mid-month it’s the turn of Encamp and La Massana, which held theirs from 14 to 16 August in 2026. Encamp’s Comú lists a surprise rally, a fishing contest at the Cortals, a mass and an homage to Encamp’s most senior neighbours. Nobody had announced the 2027 dates by September 2026, so keep an eye on Andorra festes majors.

Assumption Day, 15 August, appeared on the 2026 list of public holidays, but the shops open because it isn’t one of the four shop-closing days. And every 24 August Soldeu celebrates its patron, Sant Bartomeu. Towards the end of the month, Canillo’s communal herd of more than 250 cows moves up towards the Bordes d’Envalira pastures, a mountain scene nobody stages for tourists.

The mountains, first thing

In August the high mountains are at their best, and routes above 1,700 metres stay on the tourist board’s recommended list until late September. The problem is the people, not the terrain. My rule is simple, start early. At eight the lake car parks are empty and the heat hasn’t built. Ideas are in lakes in Andorra. At Pas de la Casa, in July and August the Coll dels Isards chairlift runs up towards Estany de les Abelletes, a lake that’s half Andorran and half French.

Traffic, shopping and prices

Andorra’s traffic authority forecast around 470,000 vehicles for August 2026, with peaks of up to 17,000 a day, and kept the double lane at the border all summer. Its peak hours at the Spanish border were 10:00 to 14:30 on the way in and 16:00 to 20:00 on the way out. If you can, cross early. If you’re flying into Barcelona or Toulouse, a coach at least lets someone else sit in the queue.

The 2026 summer sales lasted until 30 August, so the second half of the month is good for shopping. There’s no official monthly data on hotel prices, and with August demand I wouldn’t expect bargains. If price matters, look at villages away from the shopping streets and book with free cancellation. One British-specific point. GOV.UK spells out that a GHIC won’t cover you in Andorra, so buy a policy that includes hiking before you head for the peaks.

What I’d do in August

Base in La Massana or Ordino, walks at sunrise, long lunches, an evening at Caldea and the mid-month festivals. With children I’d add a day at the resorts’ summer parks, which in 2026 stayed open into September, all gathered in Andorra with kids. In the museums, Encamp’s Casa Cristo has daily opening through the summer months, and the six Romanesque churches of Romànic de bat a bat can be visited with a guide from Tuesday to Sunday, a good plan for the stormy afternoons.
