Via ferratas in Andorra, from a first climb with children to the airiest lines

Andorra is a small country with a lot of rock faces, and it shows in its via ferratas. There’s everything from a 150 m urban route by the river in Sant Julià to high mountain lines touching 2,700 m. The key is choosing your first one well, because nobody at the foot of the route will stop you to check you know what you’re doing.

Canillo, via ferrata central

Canillo parish has most of the routes, nearly all of them round the Roc del Quer, the great cliff that guards the entrance to the village. The Roc del Quer via ferrata climbs straight up the middle, 500 m of route and 350 m of ascent, very exposed, with no escape and a spectacular traverse halfway. Andorra Turisme reckons 5 minutes’ approach, 2 h 55 on the route and 40 minutes back down. At the top is the Roc del Quer viewpoint.

In the same area you’ll find the Canal de la Mora, easy, with two variants beside the Coll d’Ordino road; the Roc del Gos, short but for experts only according to Andorra Turisme, with an optional 85 m abseil at the end; and the Canal de Grau, mostly horizontal with suspension bridges and a red pinnacle. The Racons route, steep and impressive, is temporarily closed for nesting birds of prey, says the council.

Which is best for a first go?

If you’ve never done a via ferrata, I’d start with one of these four. The Tossal Gran d’Aixovall in Sant Julià is short and urban, 150 m with 40 m of ascent beside the Gran Valira. The Creu del Noral in Segudet (Ordino) is easy, open all year and very simple to reach, and next to it is the shorter Segudet route, which Andorra Turisme recommends for children and beginners.

The Clots de l’Aspra in the Cortals d’Encamp is designed with children in mind, with lots of rungs on the first section. And the Canal de la Mora in Canillo is easy but already 400 m long, a sensible stepping stone before the Roc del Quer.

Moderate routes worth the trip

My favourite outside Canillo is Roc d’Esquers, on the Entremesaigües path at the entrance to the Madriu valley. It’s 350 m with 250 m of ascent, lots of vertical moves, little exposure and a small Tibetan bridge at the end. The Sant Vicenç d’Enclar route in Santa Coloma climbs through holm oak woods and passes the chapel of the same name on the approach.

The Roc de la Coma d’Erts route in La Massana runs to 435 m with airy, slightly sporty sections. And Canillo’s two Via Cable routes, on the CG-2 between Canillo and Meritxell, spark debate among experts over whether they’re via ferratas or cable-protected climbs, so I’d leave them to people who already climb.

High mountain via ferratas

Above 2,000 m there are two obvious choices. The Bony d’Envalira, in Grandvalira’s Grau Roig sector, runs from 2,414 to 2,664 m on granite, with excellent fixings and an hour’s approach. The Coll dels Isards, near Pas de la Casa, starts at 2,153 m and tops out at 2,700 m, with two sides that start and finish at the same point; the right-hand one is more technical. Both are summer routes, and Andorra Turisme advises doing them in those months.

When is the best time for a via ferrata in Andorra?

Low routes such as the Tossal Gran d’Aixovall (990 m at the top) or Sant Vicenç d’Enclar (1,190 m) can be done for much of the year, and the Creu del Noral is open all year according to its sheet. The Roc del Quer and Canal de la Mora, at around 1,700 to 1,900 m, can hold water, snow or ice depending on the season, and extra care is urged in winter. The high mountain routes, Bony d’Envalira and Coll dels Isards, are for summer.

Kit, safety and guides

Canillo council requires certified kit, helmet, harness, a via ferrata lanyard set with energy absorber and locking karabiners, plus proper footwear. Every route is described as free access, which means there’s no check and no ticket desk. Without experience or kit, hire a mountain guide, and always look at the official sheet for closures like the one on Racons. One more point for British readers.
