The Sorteny valley, Ordino's park of mountain flowers

Sorteny is the valley I’d suggest to anyone who wants to see Andorra’s high mountains without suffering for it. A wide track, a hut with a kitchen and meadows that fill with flowers in summer. The tourist board describes it as rich in wildlife and largely set up for learning, with routes for every level, and one walk is enough to see why. In winter it changes character and becomes snowshoe and ski-touring country.

The Sorteny Valley Nature Park spreads along both banks of the Sorteny river, above El Serrat and just short of the Ordino Arcalís ski area. It has been protected since 1999 and covers more than 1,000 hectares, according to the tourist board, which calls it the heart of the Ordino Biosphere Reserve. It’s listed under the Ramsar Convention and the Council of Europe’s Emerald Network, and together with the Comapedrosa it belongs to a cross-border park shared by three nations.

The plant count depends on whom you ask. The tourist board says over 700 species of flowers and plants; the council says over 800, fifty of them found only in the Pyrenees and around a hundred rare. Either way, this is the place in Andorra for mountain flowers. For wildlife, the official listing names chamois, the Pyrenean brook newt and the common frog. Getting there and parking

You go up from El Serrat along the park track. At the entrance there’s a car park for about 50 cars, paid in July and August and smaller in winter when snow piles up. In summer I’d take the bus from El Serrat instead, which the council lists at €0.20 per person.

Beside the car park is the information hut, with wi-fi, drinks, maps and nature books, and a mountain guide who’ll suggest a route for families or groups of friends. Opening times for 2026-27 haven’t been published, so ring +376 726 512 first. If you’re driving a hire car picked up in Toulouse or Barcelona, remember that Andorra requires chains or winter tyres through the colder months, and the park road is no exception.

Which walks should you do in Sorteny?

The classic is the track to the Borda de Sorteny hut, 2.15 km with 185 m of ascent, which the council times at an hour and a quarter. On the way you pass the Estripagecs sculpture, five totems by Pere Moles, and the botanical garden, about 800 m² with nearly 300 species arranged by habitat.

For a fuller outing that’s still easy, the tourist board suggests the Canya de la Rabassa to Pla de Sorteny loop, 4.9 km and about two hours, which follows part of the interpretation trail and a birdwatching route marked with bird symbols. For real mountain walking, the Estanyó lake is 3.6 km and 558 m of ascent away, about two hours each way, with the Estanyó peak, 2,915 m, above it. For the higher routes, the tourist board points to the summer months, and outside them I wouldn’t go up without experience.

The Borda de Sorteny hut

The hut sits at 1,965 m and is staffed, with six rooms for up to 50 people and a 150 m² terrace over the valley. Ordino Arcalís publishes its summer 2026 prices, valid from 1 June to 30 November. An adult overnight stay is €59.90, half board €70 and the set lunch €29.50, with lower prices for under-12s and members of mountaineering clubs. It stays open in both winter and summer, with special dinners on full-moon nights. The country’s other huts are in mountain huts in Andorra.

My verdict

For me Sorteny is the best of Andorra’s nature parks for a first taste, and the one that pairs most easily with a cultural visit to Ordino village on the same day. With half a day, I’d walk up to the hut, have lunch on the terrace and come back past the botanical garden. With a full day and good legs, the Estanyó lake is worth the effort.
