Barcelona to Andorra, the options compared

Barcelona-El Prat is one of the two airports most British visitors use for Andorra, and the journey from there is easier than it looks on the map. It’s 208 km to Andorra la Vella, there are coaches straight from arrivals, and a hire car only needs one road to get there. Here’s how I’d weigh up the options and what to sort out before you set off.

How far it really is

Andorra Turisme puts Andorra la Vella at 208 km from Barcelona by road. That’s not far, but the last part climbs into the Pyrenees on mountain roads, so the clock matters more than the kilometres. Sant Julià de Lòria is the first town over the border, and the capital sits a few kilometres further up the valley, next to Escaldes-Engordany.

Coach timetables give a better feel for it. Andorra Direct Bus reckons on about three hours from Sants and three and a half from the airport. Andorra by Bus timetables 3 hours 15 minutes from Terminal 1 and 2 hours 45 from Diagonal.

Taking the coach from El Prat

This is what I’d do if I didn’t need a car in Andorra. Two firms pick up at both terminals. Andorra by Bus leaves Terminal 1 every two hours, calls at Terminal 2 and Diagonal, and charges €33 one way or €56 return on its website. Andorra Direct Bus runs sixteen times daily via El Prat and Sants with singles from €35, and tickets are bought online, in the app or at a ticket desk, never on board.

Luggage is generous, two cases each in the hold plus a cabin bag, and skis go as special luggage when there’s space. ALSA also runs from Barcelona Nord, though I couldn’t find a published fare. The full timetables and stops are on Barcelona to Andorra bus.

Driving a hire car up

On the Spanish side every route ends up on a single road, the N-145, which climbs from La Seu d’Urgell to the border. Andorra’s national bus station lists coaches from Barcelona Nord by three routes, through the Cadí tunnel, via Solsona and via Ponts, which is a handy way to picture the choices you have behind the wheel.

No international driving permit is needed, according to the tourist board’s guide, and a UK photocard licence is valid there, says the Foreign Office. Winter kit is compulsory between early November and mid-May, chains or winter tyres, and heavy snow can close roads for a while. What about the train?

There isn’t one. The closest you’ll get is the high-speed train from Sants to Lleida Pirineus and then Andorra by Bus from the station, 2 hours 15 minutes for €25. From Barcelona that’s a detour, since the direct coach leaves from Sants anyway. It makes more sense if you’re already travelling by rail across Spain, and it’s all in train to Andorra.

Coach or car, my rule of thumb

I’d decide by where you’re sleeping. If your hotel is in Andorra la Vella or Escaldes, the coach drops you a short walk away and the national buses cover the rest of the country from €1.90 a trip. If you’re staying up in Soldeu, Arinsal or Ordino with kit to carry, a car saves you changing buses with skis on your shoulder. Things to sort before the border

Andorra is outside the EU and Schengen, so there’s a proper customs post and you’ll need your passport, even on the coach. The UK government asks that it meets Schengen rules, issued less than 10 years ago and valid for at least three months after you leave. Your phone plan is the other trap. Andorra sits outside EU roaming rules, so check what your UK network charges there, or pick up the Andorra eSIM that the tourist board sells from €4.95.
