Rock climbing in Andorra, from Engolasters granite to Grella limestone

Andorra is known for skiing and shopping, but with so many mountains packed into so little space it was only a matter of time before sport climbing found its niche. It’s not a world-class destination and makes no claim to be one. Instead you get a tidy collection of short, well-bolted crags a few minutes from the car.

The two big crags, Engolasters and the Grella

The Agulles d’Engolasters are granite needles 15 to 30 m tall at the foot of the Engolasters springs trail in Escaldes-Engordany. There are 17 routes from 4 to 6b+, on expansion bolts, at 1,740 m and facing north-east, with views over the Andorra valley. You park at km 6.3 on the Engolasters road, where there’s an information hut, and walk about 15 minutes. Engolasters lake is close by to round off the day.

Sant Antoni de la Grella lies on the old road from Escaldes to La Massana, beside the Valira del Nord. It has 18 limestone routes from 5 to 7c, the most demanding of the crags with official sheets. Drive up the CG-3 towards La Massana, park by the Sant Antoni bridge after the first tunnel and follow the marked path. For me, these two crags justify a weekend on their own. They also make a nice contrast, rough granite spikes in the morning and smoother limestone by the river in the afternoon, which is about as varied as a short trip gets.

Where to climb if you’re starting out?

Canillo council looks after two free-access crags. The better known is the Riu d’Urina gorge, on the CG-2 by the new cemetery between Meritxell and Canillo. It has 12 routes of 10 to 30 m, from grade 3, like La Pila and Amabi, up to 6a, like the Cascada. Andorra Turisme calls it a magnificent spot, thanks to the waterfall cutting through the middle of the limestone wall. The other crag is on the same CG-2, 2 km beyond Canillo towards France.

Over in La Massana, the Roc de la Coma d’Erts has 15 routes graded 4 to 6a, right next to the Erts via ferrata. It suits a mixed group, since anyone who doesn’t climb can do the via ferrata Andorra route alongside.

High mountain rock at the Pic de Ribuls

In high summer, when it’s hot down in the valleys, the answer is to go up. On the Pic de Ribuls, at 2,780 m at the back of the Pessons cirque, there are 4 granite routes from 5 to 6a, fitted with pegs and bolts. Andorra Turisme says temperatures there stay mild even in the height of summer. You set off from the Cubil car park in Grandvalira’s Grau Roig sector, walk up to the refuge restaurant on the first lake and skirt round it to the wall. The walk in is covered in Pessons lakes.

Climbing walls for wet days

The Cortals Aventura wall in Els Cortals d’Encamp is outdoors, 17 m high and 800 m², with difficulty varying by section. Canillo’s Palau de Gel has an indoor wall for different levels, though with maintenance work under way since June 2026 you should phone before going.

When to climb in Andorra

The low crags, around 1,150 m, are the ones for spring and autumn, when the valley floor is mild. The Riu d’Urina faces south-east and the Grella faces east, so both catch the morning sun. The Agulles d’Engolasters face north-east at 1,740 m, and the Llastra de l’Obac faces north, which makes them more pleasant on warm days. In July and August the Pic de Ribuls comes into its own, and on the hottest days I’d head straight up there.

Winter is another matter. Snow and short days close most of the crags, and the indoor wall at the Palau de Gel becomes the only realistic option, maintenance works permitting.

My plan for a climbing weekend

Base yourself in Escaldes, spend the morning at the Agulles d’Engolasters and the afternoon at the Grella, with the Valira alongside. If it rains, the wall. If it’s scorching, Pic de Ribuls. Your GHIC is no use in Andorra, so be sure your policy includes climbing.
