Andorra in January, the coldest month and my pick for skiing

January is the month that shows Andorra’s winter at its most honest. It’s properly cold, the resorts are in full swing and, once Epiphany is out of the way, the whole country slows down. If you’re weighing up a January trip, my answer is yes, provided you know which days to dodge and which to grab.

How cold is January, really?

On the valley floor, at the FEDA weather station 1,135 metres up, the 1991-2020 normal mean for January is 3.1°C (38°F). That’s the lowest of the year, just below December (3.7°C) and February (4.1°C). Bear in mind it’s a day-and-night average, so early mornings are sharper and a sunny lunchtime feels mild. At the resorts, between roughly 2,000 and 2,600 metres, you’re in a different climate altogether.

According to the tourist board, December to February is when most snow falls, and it also boasts over three hundred days of sunshine annually. In practice January swings between snowy spells and dry, blue days. Every month’s normals, side by side, are in Andorra weather.

The ski case for January

My reasoning is about the calendar more than the snow. Grandvalira withdraws the 4% reduction for large groups between 25 December 2026 and 6 January 2027, and again from 30 January to the end of February. Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís pull theirs a little later, on 8 and 7 February. No resort gives up a discount in slow weeks, so those blackout dates mark the peak. January from the 7th to the 29th sits neatly in between.

Lifts turn from nine to five and day passes are dynamically priced, up to 15% cheaper online than at the ticket office. How the passes compare is in Andorra ski pass. Families bound to UK school terms will struggle to use this window, I know, but for couples and groups of friends it’s the smart one. If you’re on a package, the operator’s January weeks are where I’d look first, in Andorra ski holidays.

New Year and Epiphany

1 January 2027 is a Friday and one of four days a year when Andorra’s shops close. If you’re seeing in the New Year there and want to shop, leave it for Saturday the 2nd. Epiphany, 6 January, was a national holiday in the 2026 calendar, and while the 2027 calendar hadn’t been published by September 2026, the date is fixed. Shops still open.

That day Naturland opens its cross-country area and sells a Tobotronc ride with lunch between 11:30 and 16:30, which I think is the best family plan for a quiet bank holiday.

Stews and sausages

January has its own flavour. The tourist board points out that around Sant Antoni and Sant Sebastià, local brotherhoods cook communal pots of escudella for anyone who turns up, a deeply rooted custom. Escudella is a hearty broth with vegetables, meat and local sausage. January is also the old pig-slaughter month, source of the bringuera, donja and bisbe sausages you’ll see on borda menus. If a borda has escudella on in January, that’s what I’d order, and I’d leave room for it rather than eating on the slopes.

Getting there and staying safe

With no airport in the country, you’ll land in Toulouse or Barcelona and do the rest by road. In September 2026 the coach operators’ websites quoted singles from €36 out of Toulouse and €33 out of Barcelona airport, and in January I’d rather someone else drove the Envalira pass, which tops out at 2,408 metres. If you hire a car, Andorran law wants chains or winter tyres on board between November and mid-May. Check Andorra road conditions before setting off.

One more thing for UK visitors. A GHIC gives you nothing in Andorra, so in January a policy with winter sports cover isn’t optional.

A plan for the last Saturday

On Saturday 30 January 2027 at noon, the National Car Museum in Encamp runs a free themed visit on wartime vehicles, with a vermouth, and booking is advised. It makes a good excuse for a day off the slopes. Note that the museum, like Casa de la Vall and Casa Rull, closes on Sundays and Mondays from January to May.
